Yes, you do need one of those Amex cards. If you don't want to pay a yearly fee, I would go for the Velocity Escape card. $0 yearly fee, 1 points earned per dollar on every purchase, 2 points per dollar on Virgin Australia purchases. I believe you will also receive 10-15,000 bonus points on sign up with a referral link. Its best to redeem for flights, though you can redeem for gift cards or anything. 7800 points will get you a flight from Melbourne to Sydney, 15600 will get you that flight in business class. It says it has a 20% interest rate. I dont actually have to buy using the card to get these offers right?
