AmEx Cards - Benefits

Hi OzB Family,

I currently have a Mastercard, which is my only credit card, that I use to purchase anything online.

Lately I've been hearing a lot about Amex deals on here.
I feel like as a noob OzBargainer, I'm missing out on something.

Can anyone please enlighten me on the benefits of having an Amex Card and what these Amex deals are? Also, a recommendation of the best current Amex card deals would be much appreciated.

Thank You

AmEx Statement Offers — that's how much you have missed out. Also check our Credit Card wiki page, especially the section on American Express cards. For $0 annual fee just go with Essential.

Wow, now that just made me sad. Although, I'm not sure if I've saved or lost money by missing out on these deals. As an ozbargainer, I choose to believe the latter. Anyway, great links. Thank you very much!

    • Sorry, one last question. Are these American Express Cards you linked me to work any different to say a Commonwealth American Express Card? Can I still get the deals with a Commonwealth one? Thanks

I don't have a bank issued AmEx card, but AmEx-issued cards usually have better statement offers.

Amex cards issued by Amex have some of the best rewards programs available if you are into redeeming points for flights. Amex cards, in general, are good for utilising the very frequent statement credit offers for various retailers. Mastercard and Visa don't seem to have m/any of these type of offers.

    • Cheers. Not a big fan of having multiple cards but I'll most likely apply for one.

      • Many people acquire multiple amex cards (both primary and supplementary ones) just to use these offers. Just start with one and take it slow =)

        • Isn't having multiple credit cards a bad thing when trying to get financing?

@Hunter14: The supplementary ones don't have any impact. New card approvals should be spread out obviously. Some people and credit cards don't go well together. So if you think you'd be worse off by not paying balances fully each month or spending more than you would otherwise… don't go chasing the amex.

        • @marquise:

Oh I got no worries about paying off credit. I'm financially stable. I never spend more than I can afford and I'm always checking my accounts every few days anyway. I've always wanted to improve my CC game but just concerned about any future impact when I try to loan a new mortgage or get financing.

The thing to remember with cashback deals from amex is to make sure you're only spending on things you need/would otherwise buy.

Bcos yes if you're spending $50 because you're going to get $10 back but wouldn't have made that purchase otherwise, you're worse off.

That's why for the Shop Small most of us chase Opal/Myki etc bcos that's compulsory spending. Or now with the paypal deals, we're all trying to redeem it on bills/WW gift cards etc

    • This is what's stopping me from getting one because studies have showed that rewards programs make users spend a lot more.

  • Merged from Amex Credit Card Offers

    Hi all,

I notice a lot of people posting deals/offers where you get additional deals if you have an Amex Card. Could someone please explain what exactly I need to do, to make use of these offers? How do I know if I am eligible? Is it a particular type of Amex Card etc? Any information would be greatly appreciated!

      1) Apply for amex card
      2) Save offers to card
      3) either save money or spend more money. Smart person would make use of the offers for compulsory purchases. ie. petrol/opal

I would put a step between 1 and 2: Subscribe to Amex Statement Credit deals on OzBargain in order to be notified of a new offer

      • If I have a bank issued amex credit card, for instance through Commonwealth bank can I still make use of any of these offers and how would I know what offers I am entitled to?

        • Basically, if the deal includes a manual link(s), such as this deal, then you can click the manual link, enter in the details of your card and off you go. If it's a Targeted deal, such as this deal, then it must be a direct-issued AmEx card.
          Hope this helps.

    • I believe it’s direct Amex issued cards only

      • Nope. Bank issued works too.
