Credit Card - Which One?

Hi all,

Looking for a vote / consensus.

Just done my 11.5 months on both ANZ Black's, Got 1 month to go on my St George Amplify/ NAB Platinum and AMEX Plat Edge. Have also got a Citi Signature (no annual for life).

My plan was to get a high end Westpac card (with a bank issued Amex). However, Westpac haven't had a no annual fee first year bonus card since January.

So looking at the market my best points per annual fee options are:

Citi Platinum - 100 000 Citi points (50k Velocity), $49 annual. But I have Citi Signature card. I emailed Citi, they said I'm welcome to apply but couldn't guarantee i'd get the bonus points…helpful..not! - Anyone tried?

NAB - Cancel current card and go again? (apparently you dont need to wait 12months like ANZ)? 60 - 80k points $no annual offer currently expired ($195)

Qantas Premier - 75k points $149 annual - 20% off future flights - 2x lounge passes - https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/339272

Virgin Velocity - 60k $129 fee with a $129 credit. https://virginmoney.com.au/credit-card/compare-our-credit-ca…

  • I saved quite a bit with ANZ's hire car excess cover. Would like to keep a card with that.
    ** Come on Westpac - I had a 2 year plan!

What's the vote?

Cheers

Is it sad this went unnoticed for 15 hours?

      • It was intentional. LLOP just didn't look as good, despite being more correct technically.

        • Lol yeah I agree LLOP doesn't look as good but it triggers the Grammar Nazi side of me so much…

I've listened to the people. Poll is on!

I'm with the consensus. You should get the poll credit card.

  • If you get a Citibank Platinum, this card has a lower transfer rate to Velocity compared to the Signature. Signature's rate is 2 Citi = 1 Velocity, whereas Platinum's rate is 2.5 Citi = 1 Velocity. So on the Platinum, 100k Citi will get you 40k Velocity.

Personally I'd just wait for the next fee free offer if you're not in a rush to get the points. But if you are in a rush then I would go with Citibank Platinum, provided you could get the points guaranteed. Next best would be the Virgin card.

    • Good Intel re 40k points on platinum. Cheers. Not 100% sure I'm eligible tho with existing signature card.

  • Would help to know which FF ie Qantas or Velocity OP is likely to collect to. Personally I would get the one with the most points bonus, regardless of annual fee. I got the virgin High flyer 120k VFF 2 months ago.

    • Got 150k in both. Use points for redemption flights with both. Not fussed about status as booking a redemption bus class flight gives you all the perks anyway.

  • None

  • 11.5 months on both ANZ blacks? What are the two you can get sign-up bonuses on simultaneous? I only thought it was one

    • Frequent Flyer Black / Rewards Black. It was 75k points for each camp. Can hold both at same time. One gives Qantas lounge, the other priority pass. The insurance products on these cards are market leading also in terms of spend requirements for activation.

    • You can have one for each credit card "family" and they don't overlap in terms of being eligible for joining bonuses.

Found out the hard way when I already had the ANZ Travel Rewards credit card, and I meant to apply for an ANZ Frequent Flyer Black, but accidentally applied for the ANZ Rewards Black. Wasn't eligible for the joining points. Had to cancel that application and re-apply for the ANZ FFB. The cancelled application did hit my credit history.

  • Few votes for other. What is it?

  • Get all of them and then you don't have to decide!

    • Normally I'd agree, but need to get a homeloan in next month or so. Need to keep credit score 'decent'.

      • Lol good point. Yeah, home loan comes first :)

  • Well, via Point hacks the Virgin annual fee is halfed at $65, which gives 60k points with $1.5k spend per month and $129 flight credit.

    Lock it in thanks Eddy.
