Do You Hate Your Job but Continue Working It?

As I sit and take a brief break from what should be leisure time on a Sunday evening, I've begun to ponder how many people out there continue working a job that they don't like.

Fortunately enough for me, I don't begrudge working on a Sunday evening as I actually enjoy my job.

It got me thinking though: I've definitely known people in the past who have an intent dislike for their job but are still committed to it.

Do you hate your job? If so, how long have you stuck at it and why?

Great poll op. Surely a topic many of us have wondered about.

Kinda makes me feel better there's so many folks out there unhappy with their jobs. Here's a club I can join :)

  • Job is good pay is good but work away from home but get well fed :-)

  • Would love to have miners that make me money and I could smile and say bitcoins bitches that's how

  • I love my job, it's literally the thing i wanted to do since I was a kid. But (profanity) HR. HR are a bunch of (profanity).

    • +1

And what makes it worse is that the guys in HR often love their jobs.

  • Getting on the train at Penrith into the city each day for my desk job at the Glebe Morgue does wear me down, but with 4 kids a wife and 2 dogs to support that's what i find i need to do. Now that my 15yo daughter is pregnant to God knows who that will be another mouth to feed. But that's the deal we made - the wife and i - she wants as many kids as she can squeeze out in the time we have and i love her to bits so do my bit. She's 5 months pregnant now which was unexpected now that we're getting a little older, but if that's the will of the Lord then so be it. The weekend is spent trying to catch up with the carnage that i wasn't able to deal with during the week. But i do what i can and i know the family love and respect me for it, and they even show it on occasion, and that's important to me - it's what keeps me going. The only thing that is almost too much for me is mowing. God i hate mowing.

None of that is true (except the bit about hating mowing) but if i ever feel discouraged i think of that poor bastard and immediately cheer up.

    • I'm sure that's a friend or someone you know, and to them I say that they will be able to look back in content after the years.

      • Hell no - more an amalgamation of people i have known.
Decades of hard yakka for a few years of mild contentment - big price bro…

  • I dislike my entire industry not so much hate the job per se. But I do it as it's ok paying and have a goal in mind. My wife and I has made a conscious decision to work hard and save money now, invest well and retire at our 50's when we start making enough passive income that will supplement the lifestyle we want.

Of course if an opportunity presents itself for me to be able to be self employed, I would take that option as well.

Recently I was feeling a little unwell physically and could certainly have called in sick and used some of the abundant sick leave I have accumulated over the years. However I went to work anyway after considering the prospect of staying in all day at home, as I thought that would only make me feel worse and might drive me crazy to some degree.

Now reading this thread I feel pretty blessed to actually want to go to work, even when feeling off colour.

Anyone wanting some wise insights about satisfaction in work and life might want to listen to what was written millennia ago by an extremely wealthy king and famous philosopher who tried everything and even had 1,000 different women. You can read it in Ecclesiastes. There's even more copies and translations of it than Harry Potter.

  • My role in the heavy vehicle service industry recently changed to a 4 days on - 4 days off roster (11 hour days). We get paid overtime rates on weekends and receive 5 weeks annual leave (x 38 hours).

    I'm loving it.

Worked cold calling for charities for a year as I needed to pay rent after a stint of unemployment, most loathesome job I've ever done. Quit it to work in a call centre for an insurance company and in a spot of extremely good luck someone there actually appreciated my Uni level education and now I write ad hoc software for the same company in a role they created for me after only 6 months on the phones. I couldn't be happier!

  • I hate it occasionally but most of the time it is tolerable, whilst sometimes quite interesting. I'd always rather be doing something else.

Still, there are 112 waking hours in a week. Of that time i'm at work 38 hours. Add in annual leave, public holidays and sick leave and i'm not at work a high percentage of the time - something I tell myself to make it easier anyway.

There is a comic about your question https://xkcd.com/1768/

However, let me tell you my story. I hated my previous job so I got a new one that I hated even more. I wanted to go back to my previous job. Then I realized that it was not the jobs, it was me. How I came to this realization you may ask?
I figured that I always quit my jobs, I have never been fired in 16 years of working. My contract has always been extended, in probably 7 or 8 different jobs. I have never had a bad boss, all my bosses have been happy with me.

So right now I am still on the job I previously hated, I just put on paper the good and the bad. I realized that some of the bad things were actually good things, I realized that I learn a lot in it and I have a possibility to learn even more. I realized that some of the things I did not like were just me resisting to change and the new job's culture. Now I am ok with my job, I got other offers but I turned them down as I am ok here.

In short, my job change was good, how I've changed was even better.

I loathe certian aspects of my current job such as colleagues not pulling their weight, people's attitudes in the work place etc…

I'm at the bottom of the rung with the tradies at the top. I do however, get paid a decent amount with O/T available with a roster of 4 on, 4 off. It can get busy at times but also there are periods where you're bored out of your brain.

My previous job wa a dead end and looking back I can't believe I stayed as long as I did. Though, I did pursue studies during that time.

Many yrs ago, I was a ski instructor. This did not feel like work at all. I look back at this time fondly.

I'm currently on break from my job and I honestly don't know if I'll return.

    The job itself is fine.

a family business to to which I'm in charge of customer acquisition and accounts collectable.

However, it's the politics played by my brothers, the manipulation by my father, and the continuous screams which I can no longer take.

So I'm taking a break for now as an attempt to live outside of father's shadow and hopefully escape his influence.

15 Months in the full time workforce, already switched jobs once, lining up the second. I didn't mind the first job, great culture, switched to second so I could double my pay after 6 months working and now interviewing for the second job switch to potentially increase salary 30+% - Money hungry 24 year old

No I don't hate my job as a dole bludger because I do nothing and gets taxpayers money :D.

    • so do most government workers :D

  • Moved into I.T. seven years ago and used to love it. Still quite like it but find I'm competing with qualified people in India and Philippines who are on a quarter of the salary, so my days are numbered.

  • Most of the time I like my job.

Sometimes I wish I didn't have to do it.

Sometimes I get bored on the weekend and go back to work (its quite flexible).

My job is ok, sometimes boring. Money not bad, work from home two days a week, onsite gym at the office and decent people in my team. A lot worse tings I could be doing.

  • I went to university and completed two degrees (Economics and then Law, even did the PLT component so I could have practiced) but ended up in roles like Contact Centre Manager and Business Analyst, and now years later I am in a pseudo IT/Management position. I enjoy the work, just want to get paid more so I can actually afford all the kids I have haha!

Don't hate my job, but dislike working in general

The only thing that I hate about working is about taking leaves.

Situation being that every job I have is in very small teams (~4 people) with very little work overlap. This means that staggering leave is a thing and I cannot compete with "family" situations due to being only "married" but no kids.

Also there are reporting peak periods every month (start of month to do EOM dashboards) thus being the responsible person I am, I have the feeling that I shouldn't take leave on the 1st to 10th every month… (or else who is gonna do my work for me?)

This makes leave taking really hard as I need to plan months in advance and let the team know, judge if it is ok for me to take the leave at the time and then proceed with it.

This is frustrating at times as I can nearly never take leave during Chinese New years periods to visit my in-laws or my parents overseas (since this time is always the school holiday season) or any impromptu traveling.

Apart from this I am fine with my job

  • In a rut right now, stuck doing IT support.

Wasted a lot of money on a useless degree to end up doing mind numbing basic support tasks. Pretty much a dead end career.

  • Whatever it takes to feed that ozb addiction

  • I stick to my job because OzBargain exists and otherwise wouldn't be able to take advantage of great deals.

It's very hard to find a job you like, a lot of people (like me) got stuck into one low paying job for a long term, buying things only on specials or through Ozbargains. You can tell your mum and dad how much you hate your job, but they not gona help you much lul. I just googled average salary in Australia, 70k is bit unrealistic by judging how many poor people there are where I live….

    500+ votes good voter turnout

  • Dislike my job - repetitive, boring, have to deal with demanding people on a regular basis.

Dislike my direct supervisor who has absolutely no people skills (who also used to be a bully).

Got along well with some people but generally not very happy.

Have been thinking about quitting since earlier this year but haven't pulled the trigger yet. Probably because I don't know what to do with myself if I don't have a job? I get bored easily and I overthink, so if I were to sit on my bottom doing absolutely nothing for more than a week, I'd probably go crazy.

i dont have my job but i get annoyed with commuting and doing stand up meetings everyday

  • The problem with work is you have to be there all the time

    Do I love my job?

    No.

But does it afford me the ability to go on lavish vacations and buy anything I want?

    Also no.

    ¯_(ツ)_/¯

    • +1

this gets a vote from be just for the ¯_(ツ)_/¯

  • Can't say I'm not surprised but it does explain the attitude of some drivers on the morning commute; in a terrible mood and they still have the whole day ahead of them. I feel bad for them. I could probably earn twice what I do now but I'd rather be happy and in good health.

  • Why be banished to a lifetime of menial work, or waste your time trying to compete for something tolerable with prospect for advancement, when you can (barely) live off of Newstart?

  • I did, then I stopped working and now sit on ozbargain 24x7.

Seriously need to think about getting back to work. These "bargains" dont pay for themselves.

  • I do it for the money

  • I'm doing it for the money. I keep murderers out of prison because of a technicalities

Money and passion are opposites. As soon as your wage depends on something you love, you have no choice about whether to do it or not. Passions are best left to the times when the passion takes you.

Worked in retail management for the best part of 10 years and hated every minute of it.
Decided I wanted to learn a trade. Quit my full time job, did a pre apprenticeship and am now a 2nd (almost 3rd) year apprentice carpenter earning more money than I did working retail. The best decision I ever made.

Wish this topic is "Do You hate Your Marriage but Continue Working It?" 😂

    • The "new forum topic" option is just up the top there ^…

  • Don't hate it - but I'm comfortable.
It's a job where you can sort of develop a side business from - Been here nearly on 7 years now and figured it's time to move onto something that's more challenging and w/ more pay. Will be looking around May/June next year as I would've used up my leave by then

  • Seems like a lot of people here work trade/desk jobs/I.T? I love my job, but it's none of these things

  • I have to admit I don't hate my job as per se. I instead dislike the way the seniors in the job think they are a know-it-all, managers that are not receptive to suggestions… I wish I was given more opportunities and challenges in my job instead of the same old mundane routine that I am in right now. Fresh out from uni, just employed over 8 months, I want to learn as much as possible but I am bounded by limits. Kinda motivates me to be self-employed too. But I still want to be in this industry for sure :)

  • I wish I worked on shows like 'Getaway' or some travel review show.

  • The people you work with determine whether a job is good or not. Right now I work with awesome people, so the job is great.
