Again? I was thinking of buying it, but now that I've played it free so many times and it will come around every month I feel like I don't need to

    • +15

4 days a month is not enough to fully appreciate Overwatch imo

      • +1

I agree, and I still want to buy it, but the OzBargainer in me just seems reluctant to pay for something I get for free

        • +4

Tell them to pay rent or get out.

    • +5

On the same boat but not willing to pay $60, hoping for a Black Friday or Xmas sale! At least now I can confirm if I still want the game.

      • +1

Also watch out for a country-swap deal, like this: https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/331496
That's how I purchased mine a few weeks back.

I thought I could just hold out and play every free weekend, but the last few I enjoyed so much, it broke me, and I bought it the next time I saw a good deal.

      • +6

I still think you guys are crazy holding out to save $20 on a game that's been out for 18 months when you actively want it.

But this is OzBargain so I'm probably seen as the crazy one :P

        • In my defense, I first played it during the September free weekend. Only been 2 months =D

Bought DOOM on sales to scratch that FPS itch.

        • It's not like Overwatch is the only FPS around, I've got others to fill in the gap.

        • It's not the only FPS around but is possibly the most polished and long-lasting.

  • pretty smart way to tackle starwars:battlefront 2

    • Or Fortnite?

    • I'll be busy playing usum personally

  • Q. Do I need Xbox Live Gold or PlayStation Plus membership to participate in the Free Weekend?
    A. Xbox Live Gold and PlayStation Plus are required to play during the Free Weekend.

    • Cheers. Added that in

  • +2

Would take me longer than that to download the game via my connection.

    • It's not that large - about 10gb.

      • +1

aaannnnnddd that's my question answered, thanks :D probably take me an entire day to download 10gb, and I won't be able to do anything online during that period.

  • -3

This isn't a freebie because Xbox Live Gold/Playstation Plus are required.

    Freebie:
Item or service is completely FREE to obtain, with zero shipping cost and no strings attached.

    • +9

      PC

      • So the PC game is a freebie the others aren't.

I guess that's a grey area though, so I retract my comment.

    • Would this deal be useful in this instance?

  • +1

Have this on PC but will be downloading to play with a mate on ps4!

  • -5

Technically the game is very well made, but I wouldn't recommend buying it. You should try it first.

You have to wait a few minutes before getting into a game, then you lose systematically. You think it is just the start and it will get better after playing few hours, but it doesn't. Toxicity is also very present in competitive matches and tiring.

I am waiting for a better alternative.

    • +4

I'm not sure how you can say everyone will "lose systematically" , dont an equal amount of people win every time you lose? The game matches you with people of equal skill precisely to avoid that happening.

Also the queue times rarely go over a minute in peak times, are you sure it isn't a connection issue you're experiencing? Overwatch is one of the most popular games out right now, wait times will usually be minimal unless you're in a large group or maybe queueing for comp.

I agree regarding competitive but that's an entirely optional, ignorable part of the game. Quick play and the arcade modes are more than enough for most.

      • Queue: 30s to 1:30min
        Skimming: 0 to 3min
        Pick-up a Hero: 30s
Time before the match starts: 1min

Average time before you start the match: 3:30min

Match length: between 3 min and 12 min

        • +1

Queue: 5s (if you play by yourself it can be this quick at peak time) to 5min (only in a 6 man group)
Skirmishing(?): 0s - leave it disabled
Pick hero / time before match: not exactly dead time as it is used to strategize with team.

Match length: only 3 min if severely unbalanced. Closer to 10 mins on average. Double that in comp.

You also forgot to mention matches switch sides and often roll into the next one without having to re-queue. Just load the next map and you're in hero select again.

All in all I don't think this is unreasonable compared to other games such as Battlefield, CS:GO or MOBAs. YMMV so it's best people try this free weekend to see for themselves.

        • +2

A few minutes for a game is quite acceptable IMO. I used to wait up to an hour for a game with Battleborn.

        • @Soothsayer:
Pick hero / time before match: not exactly dead time as it is used to strategize with team.

To this point, in comp especially, you can see what the other team's players play most frequently and work out counters, as well as plan attack etc.

The only dead time is Queue and I actually don't mind it as it gives me a chance to watch highlights, open loot boxes, reply to texts/messages etc.

If anything it sounds like your experience with Overwatch has left you incredibly jaded and you're looking for a reason to bail. Fair if you don't like the toxicity, but I still find it extremely satisfying when you solo queue into a game where people work together.

        • @Soothsayer:
10 min games? That sucks, I like longer games like Dota 2 (30-70 mins).
Reminds me of how games went from 30-60 mins on BF3 to 10-15 mins on BF4. Takes me a while to get into my stride, and once their its nice to enjoy it for a while and get some real strategy going and find a few worthy opponents. None of the COD death match stuff.
Is there any modes that go for longer, which are also objective based (capture nodes/flags etc)?

        • +1

          @Viper8:

Totally agree when it comes to games like Battlefield, longer games feel more epic due to slower progress through the map and also because you spend a lot of time running to objectives etc. For CS it also makes sense due to no respawning.

For OW I find the length is good for the kind of game it is - instant respawns and very little time commuting. 10 mins is average but it is also possible for closely matched games to go longer if a team barely makes it to each checkpoint etc. Think of it like TF2. The game is designed around very quick and varied encounters and you're encouraged to switch up classes/team compositions etc as necessary.

No, there isn't a longer game mode. You sound like someone who might enjoy competitive, which matches 2 teams together for longer by default (maybe 15-35 mins typical).

        • @Soothsayer:
Thanks. Will be giving it a go this weekend on PS4 and PC, with the intent of buying it for one of the 2. :)

      • Also the queue times rarely go over a minute in peak time

That wasn't my experience, often wait multiple minutes.

        HFC cable connection.

        • Your connection doesnt affect anything, unless your ping is absurd.

I'm bouncing between Master/Grandmaster, and I get into games between 0-1:30 minutes. At high ranks above diamond, you don't get many good players and usually get placed with people below you. Queue times are usually much faster at lower ranks. It just depends on where you are on the scale.

The "Top 500" leaderboard is dominated by people in the US, (because for some dumb reason Australia is in the Americas region), and there are only a couple (max 20) top 500 players in Australia. It's really hard to climb once you reach Grandmaster, because you end up playing with diamonds.

It's a fun game, but the higher ranks don't have many people to play with. You end up playing with the same people too.

  • If you're going to pick Mercy (a character in the game) please for the love of God heal your teammates.

this game is much more fun when you work as a team - rather than going in like you would on COD by yourself (not that its always the right way to go)

EDIT: those who may want to play with OZB players - add me on PS4 with the following username: a_chitti_knt

Don't forget to check out Junkertown which is the newest map set in the outbacks of Australia! It has an outback dunny and take-away (which there was an uproar since it launched with "take-out") There have been a few reworks of heroes for those that played it at the last free-to-play period; Mercy lost her resurrection Ultimate but can solo rez with her skill, DVA has missiles and a lowered shield.

Either way, I'll be looking out for my fellow OZB.

    • take-away (which there was an uproar since it launched with "take-out"

Very serious business indeed. Many people losing their shit.

  • Out of curiosity, does this mean I can make an alt account (and potentially level up to 25 and do placements on a fresh account)?

I've wanted to see if I'd end up placed somewhere else now compared to when I started/where I am now. (ignoring the "if you're good you'll level up" etc etc etc - seeing if Elo hell is actually real or if I am just perfectly average.)

    • Free weekend players can't play in comp, you'll need to purchase the game to do this (it will likely be on sale as well).

Even if it were, it wouldn't tell you much as you'd just be playing newbies and other smurfs which wouldnt reflect your true skill.

However I advise against creating a smurf account for this weekend - crushing newbies who want to try out the game will unfairly discourage them if they get stomped every round.

    • I purchased an alt a couple of months ago, when OW was on sale at JB for super cheap.

Elo hell isn't what most people think. The only reason it exists is because people are increasingly toxic at the borders between different ranks, because you meet people really close to ranking up, or those who just deranked.

Besides this, even if you go on a winning streak, you will lose later and drop to your original rank.

  • God Game!

  • will this be on sale?

    • +1

It has been on sale during free weekends in the past. Hoping it will be again

  • doh i was assuming you'd be able to get the game on limited time for the free weekend?

isnt this a multiplayer only game? who the hell owns the game and doesnt have psn+ or xboxlive anyway… im not paying $50 just to trial a game online with my psn… why the hell… give it to me for free for a weekend, and then ill tell you if i give a damn.

    • I think the deal starts at 7pm GMT so not for another 8 hours? Then it should be free to download from PSN Store I'm guessing

      • ah okay thanks! ill try the psn store again tomorrow. look forward to playing it the day after…

  • +1

    No pre download… Sad :(

    • IKR wanna try it out on both PS4 and PC.

      • dont they know how shit AUS internet is!

  • ok so trying to download, i can find the game "Overwatch® Free Weekend" in my PSN store on the browser, but i cant use the download to ps4 function.

i cannot find the game from the PSN store on the actual console, it only shows me the paid game of the year edition. awesome. i'd say these idiots dont have any clue what they're doing, but they do, and they're just attempting to scam people.

  • Not working on my Xbox One as well.
