Great price for the Roku Premiere+. This streams in 4K for those lucky enough to have the bandwidth and equipment for it. You will need to get a AU adaptor and have a VPN service if you want to use its full capabilities. Roku does have Netflix, Hulu, HBO Now, and Amazon Video channels which you will need to access via VPN and subscriptions to these services. I'm not an owner myself as I have the Xiaomi Mi Box but would be keen for feedback from people that have owned both.

Here's the spiel:

Perfect for HD and 4K Ultra HD TVs, features fast quad-core processor and 802.11ac dual-band wireless.
4K Ultra HD at 60fps with four times the resolution of 1080p HD, delivering crisp detail and brilliant, life-like images.
Vibrant HDR displaying an incredible range of colors, brighter whites, and deeper blacks.
Enhanced point anywhere remote with headphones for private listening.
Unbiased search across top channels. Find where it’s free or cheapest to watch.

4k is way off for me. 2019 before nbn. joke mate.

Still have our (and use nearly daily) hd roku from 2012.

Good price for this 4k one, wouldn't mind it but pretty much pointless given our speeds.

  • Is it can also use as an Android box?

    • No, it has it's own interface.

    • +1

Nah, it uses its own OS. It's got better cross-service search than Android, though.

    • Nope. Roku box:)

  • +1

Does PIA VPN work for any of those services?

    • +1

trying to figure out myself on how to add PIA VPN via modem router instead of having another router with VPN settings connected to the modem

      • +1

These are great devices. Unfortunately you cannot change the DNS directly. https://support.unblock-us.com/customer/portal/articles/3230…
You can change the DNS at the router though. This doesn't work for my system, but if it works for anyone else it is a good deal.

      • +5

PIA addresses get blacklisted by streaming services (speaking from experience).
Even if the box handles it, it won't serve your purposes.

        • I have sideloaded PIA on my Xiaomi mibox 3, US netflix works fine. Still would love to see if TV netflix works via VPN on router

        • @jayzorz:

Which US PIA location are you connected to?

        • @dazweeja:

          Eastcoast

        • @jayzorz:

Thanks mate. I'll give that a shot.

    • You need expressVPN I think that works with netflix US

According to Malcom Turnbull, well known Telstra employee currently ******* everyone in the **** for their financial benefit as he pretends to be Prime Minister as well, 12 Mbit is all you could ever need or want.

For Christ's sake Australia: vote this charlatan out of office.

Or stay brain dead, your choice voters.

I lived in NZ for a bit, paid $90pm for the Fiber Internet straight to house unlimited (Spark). It was awesome 100Mb+ all the time.

      • -3

        NZ

A tinny country, that is easy to deliver fiber to.

        Comparing apples to insignificant oranges.

        • +2

But less taxpayers to pay for it, so not really different

        • +1

That arguement has been debunked so many times.

        • -2

          @JAKEBAB:

That arguement has been debunked so many times.

Explain to me how it isn't more difficult and expensive to deliver fiber to entire continent of Australia, compared to the tiny island of New Zealand.

But less taxpayers to pay for it, so not really different

But still a comparatively small population, spread out over a massive area.

Some suburban Lefties need to venture out of the suburbs and see how big our country actually is.

You can't judge him solely for the NBN fiasco. You really must weigh up all the other good things he's done since in office. Wait … Hang on …

    • +1

Yeah!! Let's vote out Charlatan A out so we can have Charlatan B in again. That'll make us feel good and self righteous for 5 minutes until we start to think..hey everything is still the same…Lets vote Charlatan A in again…and so the cycle perpetuates forever more.

A note that 4K Netflix won't work on the Australian version library when using a Roku. This is because the Telstra T Box (which is a rebranded Roku) does not support 4K, so Netflix AU won't push 4K content down through Roku.

You'll need a VPN which Netflix don't block that can stream 4k content for (but lose your AU library access). More info here: https://help.netflix.com/en/node/23886

Also note that there's no local TV services available. Ie no Stan, Plus 7 or ABC iView. These are only available for the T Box, which seems to be locked down.

I have a premiere which I use for Plex and Netflix, which does the job great. VPN streaming for other US based services like HBO Now etc is a bit meh, cause of VPN speeds (PIA) and ADSL. Yay Australia!

Edit: Just checked my own link, and looks like the Telstra Box now supports 4k. So, maybe Netflix will push content down through 4k now.

    • Can you install Telstra TV apps to this?

    • +2

Yep, the new Telstra TV2 (based on a newer Roku model) does support 4K.

    • +3

      "Telstra T Box ("

I am so (profanity) pissed telstra bought the rights and rebranded the roku instead of roku just releasing locally. You can't even get the roku app if you're located in australia.

(profanity) telstra and their shitty out of date rebrand versions.

    • +1

Can confirm that Roku works with Netflix AU for 4k content.

Have a Roku4 and it has been working quite well for 4k content via Netflix AU. No Stan nor any local content though.

  • I have a Roku 3; and whilst I stream Netflix - primarily I use it with my Plex Server (NAS).

I do this over WIFI; does anyone know if there are any benefits from the Roku 3 to this model?

    • How does Plex work on this one? I assume it's a supported app? On the Telstra TV (custom roku), there's no "official" plex app but you can sideload the Plex Classic Player, which doesn't seem to work very well for me. I assume the "official" Plex version is a lot better?

      • +1

I use Plex with the Roku Premiere (not +)

It's a supported app, and works very well. The UI feels a bit dated (now that other OS's are getting UI updates), however they are developing it. Last month the Plex Roku app got Live TV support, which is a new feature Plex are rolling out.

        • I actually don't mind the app. It flows, functional and easy to navigate.

There has been some horror stories with the newer UI on other systems, so happy for them to take the brunt before released on Roku.

Wonder if the processor upgrade will assist with rendering.

      • " I assume the "official" Plex version is a lot better?"

It's the best version of the plex app I've used, compared to either the web player, windows 10 player, android player, ps3 player, ps4 player. The roku is by far the fastest plex player I've used. I was amazed.

(this is with the most recent stick [Oct 2017 model])

        • +1

It's the best version of the plex app I've used,
I have to agree with this statement. I have been using Plex on a Roku 2 for about 3 years now, in the last 12 months i have bought a new TV and more recentely a Mi Box and buy far the Roku app is the best.

The one main thing missing from the others is the unwatched tab which is something i use regularly.

    • +2

I "upgraded" from Roku 3, and was really disappointed to learn that this new box has a problem with Plex and DTS relating to audio sync. If you have a bunch of DTS content, I'd hold off buying this. There's a bunch of posts about this on the Roku forums, but because it is just a problem with Plex, they have been very slow to fix it.

They just did a firmware update (version 8) and it still didn't fix it for me.

I had my Roku 3 box for years, but it started having some overheating issues. Other than that, it worked perfectly. In hindsight, I probably should have just bought another Roku 3.

      • Excellent - thank you for the insight.

        Will hold off the purchase.

  • Can I use this specific model to stream movies from nas (netgear readynas) wirelessly? I have plex server on nas and wish to use that

    • Yes, there's an official Plex app you can install and use

      • Thanks - ordered one. To my surprise there are 20 local pickup points and you save 1$ if you pickup . The savings is small but the safety is good.

  • How does this compare to Chromecast 2 or WD TV Live? I have both of these so not sure what Roku can offer that the other 2 can't.

    Thanks

    • +2

alot better, chrome cast is a joke, needing your phone, WD is old school no nice support for things any more….. ie plex is hap hazard, i want the full UI, def get it.

  • is this the telstra 2 box one?

  • Will Kodi work on this?

    • Its not on the offical channel list but if you have a NAS or Xpenology then you can has DS Video or Plex run with it. It has quite an exhaustive channel list. Very tempted at this price.

I have a MiBox but I like collecting boxes :)

  • +1

Is it Telstra I have to thank for being unable to get an official, unadulterated Australian-market Roku?

    • It sure is!

    • +1

Yep. Unfreakinbelievable. I bought the amazon streaming stick version and am really mad that telstra screwed the aus market

  • -2

"You will need to get a AU adaptor"
OR just bend the 2 pins on the power adaptor.

  • "You will need to get a AU adaptor and have a VPN service if you want to use its full capabilities."

This was a great deal until I read that..

I'm already paying for Netflix, and on top of that I need to subscribe to VPN to watch what I'm already paying for…

    • You don't need a VPN, don't worry. I use it for AUS netflix, PLEX, youtube, aus radio stations, tonnes of stuff.

  • +1

I have been watching the price on the premiere for a while now and been waiting for it to get to $40US but this worked out only $2US dollars more than the premiere due to cheaper postage.
I bought one yesterday due for delivery on the 23rd of November.

Will be replacing my Roku 2

  • +1

I already have a Nvidia Sheild TV Pro but I order one for one reason and one reason only:
It supports Dynamic Refresh Rate Switching with Netflix!

    • I looked at this model and became very sad that isn't unreleased for the local market.
Are you using the USA model?
      how are you finding it?

      • haven't got it yet, I just ordered it from this post.
but many reviews and forums say the refresh rate switching is spot on, which is what I want.

        works with Netflix AU

      • I have the Nvidia Shield (pre 2017) - its a fantastic device with built in chromecast, netflix and plex additions. Can also side load PIA and Kodi. Highly recommend. But you are paying over double the price of this.

        • +1

You do not side load kodi. It is in the android play store. Great device indeed.

        • yep, the Nvidia Sheild does everything I want it too… except auto refresh switching for Netflix. Hence why I ordered the Roku.

  • +1

I have the Premiere and a Mi box which I use along with Getflix to watch US streaming services. Advantages of the Roku are access to Amazon Instant Video and an updated Hulu interface which allows multiple profiles (in my case for different family members) and "add-ons" like an HBO subscription. Disadvantage is that I haven't been able to get Netflix US to work.

  • +1

I have bought and setup half a dozen or so Roku HD streaming sticks (2017 model) for friends and family to use Netflix and to run Plex. They really are the best solution for this especially for the price. The Nvidia Shield being the only other which is better in my opinion but at a higher purchase price. Trust me I've used/owned most of them. The only issue I had with 1 Roku was it was dropping off wi-fi every now and again. Turned out to be a dodgy 5v feed from a crappy no-name TV USB port which supplies the juice to the Roku stick. Think the Premiere would be mains powered anyway due to its size and extra processing ability. They are also easy to use (A godsend when you have over a dozen Plex clients streaming media from your server) The wi-fi remote is a nice touch and again easy to use.

  • Hey guys. I decided to buy one but can not find the deal. Has it expired?

  • Did anyone receive their item? I got it today but it is Roku Premiere and not Premiere+

    • Mine is due for delivery on Friday.

      • Mine arrived this morning a day late and is the Premiere +

        • Thanks. Mine is still boxed and it’s orange but the sticker on barcode says Roku+ . Was your package like that?

        • @VAA:

The box says roku premiere + the barcode says roku & the box is closer to red

        • @marko62: thanks. Looks like I have got the wrong item
