surprisingly (or unsurprisingly) there are collectors of rare and sort after CRT monitors.- some sony trinitron monitors fall in to category.

Not everything on Gumtree is a bargain. Some people use the site to try and make money. There's plenty of things on there that are more than what they're worth.
If someone wants to buy it, then they'll buy it. They buyers decide how much they're willing to pay. And if the listed price is too high, then the seller will be forced to drop their price until a buyer thinks it's reasonable enough to pay.

Yep. Some people know they are trying to make a buck, some people paid too much and are trying to get their money back. See it a lot with camera gear, people tell you about discount vs RRP. Maybe they paid RRP, maybe not.
