Amex is great value with all these perks more than makes up for its fees

    • +12

especially when you pay zero annual fees like me ;)

      • Platinum edge and the velocity cards are all I've got waiting the 18 month period for the next lot of sign up bonuses :) ANZ has been the next best bank for offerings right now.

        • What do ANZ cards offer? You mean ANZ Amex or ANZ Visa/master?

        • +1

          @ryangoal:
Black Qantas and adventures cards good sign up bonuses lounge passes and flights

        • @DaTa: Thanks will keep an eye on it in the future.

        • +1

Is that how to get mass flyer points these days? Signup>spend money>acquire points>cancel card(before p.a fee and after points credited)>wait 18months>reapply for same card with bonus points?

        • @Pandaboss:

and plenty of banks to choose from

        • @Serathis:
          Sweet!
And I hope it won't affect credit rating with the amount of cards I will now apply for hahah

          Signup bonuses here I come!

        • @Pandaboss:

would affect if you're planning to get a mortgage.

        • +1

@Serathis: if you can afford to buy a house at top of the market prices

        • @Serathis: they often just take into account the total credit limit, not so much the amount of cards you've applied for

      • if you spend more than $28k per year, you're better off just paying the $400 fee to upgrade to explorer card. I calculated that if you only spend on gift cards you get about 1.4% back from each transaction.

And this calculation would be even better if you used it to buy frequent flyer points instead of gift cards. There's also an annual $400 travek credit that you get, so if you need to travel at least once a year, that credit pretty much means you're paying nothing for the card.

        • thanks I ll look into it :)

        • @Gooddeal21:

yeah i don't know why these credit card companies make the points etc so complicated. But I did the maths a while ago and realized it was a false economy to try to save on the fees based on my spending. If you do sign up, wait until they got some sort of bonus points program for signing up.

        • @Gooddeal21: Oh and if you do sign up, PM me and i'll give you my referral code and I can get some free points out of it (not that I'm trying to influence you to do it for this reason, honestly it's a great card).

        • +1

@witsa: dont forget to mention that with the referral the new application gets bonus points ontop of current signup points and also the referer gets bonus points.

Ive jut got my explorer card today and will see if my referral link i used, worked.

        • +1

@Pandaboss: nah they changed it, you get 60k and the referrer gets 30k instead of you getting 100k.
          https://www.americanexpress.com/au/content/mgm/the-explorer-…

        • @witsa: thanks though usually I would refer my partner, cancel and he would refer me….

  • +8

Yes, they are good perks. Be mindful not to spend if you were not intending to spend… otherwise it defeats the whole purpose of these 'saving' money offers…

    • +3

We know that, but still can’t resist!!!

  • +1

5.5% Cash Rewards too for hotels

    • Someone willing to give it a go on flights? Might work just like all other amex deals.

      • flights most likely charged direct by airlines.

        • No that's not right in my experience. I almost always book direct with airlines but sometimes when I'm being creative an OTA works. And Expedia is a decent one.

More likely they have different merchant names for pay now hotels/flight & hotel/flights only, etc

That said they may not and it might be like other AMEX promos where a credit comes anyway.

        • @BugsBunnyAUS: I am pretty sure Expedia charged my credit card (not the retailer) when I bought the mistakenly discounted SYD to LAX fares in 2013. However I've also had the opposite experience and as you said there may be different merchant names for flights that won't count to this promo. It's a risk but worth taking if the flight is the same price everywhere.

      • I think it really depends on the airline and the flights that are being booked. By memory several times I've booked flights through Expedia, these were directly charged by airlines as mentioned and therefore doesn't trigger the spend as it isn't a charge actioned by Expedia themselves. If it was charged through Expedia I don't think there is any way for them to differentiate whether its flights or not.

Also use AMEXAU10 to get an extra 10% off at selected hotels

    • +1

Could someone put this in the main introduction section?

    • Thanks do you have to use amex in order to use this code?

      • +1

According to the T&C yes you do.

"You must make payment using a credit card issued by AMEX and/or its affiliates or its independent licensees in Australia"

        • thanks for the link below

        • +1

          @roofyapple:

          I linked the T&C below.

Most likely because your dates are outside the stay period

Redemption Period: Valid for use by 11:59pm AEST, 31 December 2017 (“Redemption Period”).
Stay Period: The stay dates must be before 31 March 2018 (inclusive) (“Stay Period”).

    • Is there any indication as to which hotels are participating in this deal? Have tried a couple of hotels but has come up as invalid…

      Edit - nvm, found the T&C's below…

      • SAME SAME

      • +1

SO given that we can only use this code via www.expedia.com.au/amex, I assume that cashrewards is out of the question?

        • Worth a try to:
          1. find an eligible hotel during the stay period
          2. then use cashrewards to load the normal expedia page
          3. find the exact hotel and enter in the code to see if it still works!

Didn't see the deal has already expired!

  • I used to be able to log into amexconnect and just press save to card but now I have to type in card number every time. Is there an app or somewhere else I can save to card without entering card number?

    • Yeah unfortunately you can't, the amex app needs a linked amex card. The app makes it easier to save offers though.

  • This is the T&C link if anyone wants to read

Can u stack this offer with other offers on amex?

So potentially u can get the Hilton $100 discount when u spend more than $400 on amex, cash rewards 5.5% rebate, amex Expedia 10% discount code , and now this $60 rebate from Expedia ??!!??

    • +2

No you can’t. Hilton Amex prom needs to book direct with Hilton.

  • No manual link to register? How many times we can use the same card?

    • Still need to register, the code is unrelated.

      • I meant to register for Amex cashback

        • The link is up the top.

  • Can't seem to find how to "pay now" but I ll look into further, we were waiting for a deal to book for hotels.

  • anyone having trouble finding the "pay now" option? there's no filter even, booking.com is so much easier to navigate !

  • i cant seem to find the spilt payment option on their app or website, can I do spilt payment?

    • No

    • I called them and they said that could split payments, but will be issued different bookings. One card per night. The Amex promo code can be applied over the phone too.

      • How does that different from booking 2 one night stay on different cards?

        • I asked him that and he mentioned its better done over the phone as he can leave the notes for the hotel to combine them all.

Has anyone done three different one night bookings and combined them when you reach the hotel? Do hotels normally accept it?

      • +1

There's nothing stopping you from making multiple bookings then email the hotel directly to ask them to stitch the bookings together?

  • +1

will this likely work w cruises?

    • probably not, I booked a cruise from Expedia, but the credit card was charged by a travel agent, instead of Expedia

      • Thanks :)

  • Fully redeemed now! Got to be fast with these things :(

  • Goneeeeeee

  • Too late to the party :(

These offers sell out too quickly now. They should make supplementary cards ineligible to spread the love around.

    • You snooze you lose

      • Don’t worry, there’s a cull due in February.

        • Care to elaborate on this a bit more?

        • +1

@mini2: He means NAB and Westpac are ending their relationship with AMEX; ANZ have alteady ended theirs.

  • I received an email at 7am today from amex about this offer with a link to register in the email which I did -for one of my cards. By the time I went to register the others the offer was gone. 15,000 sign ups already? Seems like these amex offers are disappearing very quickly, often in a few hours.

  • Does any one know if you get charged an international transaction fee for booking an overseas hotel with Expedia, even if you get charged in AUD? I know Agoda does but haven't tried Expedia

    • +1

From my own experience. Amex doesnt charge you international fee if you pay in AUD

  • Good deal - just cancelled/rebooked my Hawaii hotel booking for the second time. Originally booked for over $800 and now down to $670 (with Amex offer, AMEXAU10 code and price fluctuations).

  • Oh No. Too late for this offer :(

  • This seems to work fine at hotels.com also. I just got an Amex notification saying I'd successfully used it when using Pay Now on hotels.com

    • say what? you used the expedia voucher on hotels.com?

    • wondering if this also works at cheaptickets.com

      • No harm trying with free cancellations

  • +3

Just booked flights through Wotif (parent company is Expedia apparently) and received a confirmation email from Amex for this offer.

Will provide an update if/when the credit is received

    • +2

Can confirm $60 credit received a few days after the transaction went through

      • Did you buy domestic or international?
Previously whenever I have used Expedia for international the charge has appeared as the airline……..

  • +1

4 nights, booked individually, cash rewards 5.5%, AMEXAU10 to get 10%, 4 different Amex fo $60 credit per card.

    • nice ! I am trying to book for a trip we have planned though can't find any with pay now :(

  • If this deal ends on the 14th does that mean last time to use is by midnight on the 13th or the 14th?

    • The 14th in my experience

  • have the same Q - can i book by 14th dec and stay at the hotel later or should the hotel stay be completed by 14th? I have a trip planned for mid Jan..

    • +1

You can book and stay later. Doing the same thing myself for my Melbourne trip in April (already got the statement credit)

      • +1

        great.. thanks!

  • +1

Thanks OP - booked 7 consecutive nights and received all 7 amex statement credit emails immediately. Will be a lot of checking in and out if the hotel can't stitch together the individual itineraries :) But worth the instant savings of $420.
