Bestway Palm Springs Inflatable Hot Tub / Spa - Large Size (196x71cm, 963L) - $512 Delivered @ Outbax Camping on eBay

120
PREZZY

Our old inflatable hot tube is looking a little worse for wear so it's time for an upgrade. I had flagged this listing last week as being the cheapest around (for this size/style) - and with the 20% off makes it a steal.

(Note - there are other models/sizes available - search using the original PREZZY post link for 'spa' to see other models).

This one is the largest one Bestway make. Includes heater, filter, mat, etc - everything you need except the chemicals. And water. And patience while it heats up. And a neverending source of electricity. But apart from that, it's complete.

We love our inflatable spa - wouldn't 'upgrade' to a rigid one even if we could afford it, prefer the ability to use it as a play pool for the kids and the fact it's relatively indestructible. Happy to answer any questions.

For chemicals - you can use bromine (standard, cheap, but smells like chlorine) or as we do, 'biguanide' based chemicals (non standard, not cheap, but no smell whatsoever). We get ours from Clark's rubber - ask for 'saniteezy' starter kit.

  • You really know your inflatables.

And how to keep them sanitary!

  • How long did you old one last? What sort of useable life do you expect out of these.

We bought ours in 2011 I think. In that time we've had only one small air leak (easily patched). The bigger problem - which happened last Summer - was that the straps that hold the lid on had frayed - presumably too much sun or exposure to bromine. Not too big a problem, just used a strap tied to two corners of the pool fence to hold it down. Stopped the wind blowing it off, but probably let more heat out than if we could still hold it down tights.

It lasted intact for about 5 years - I think it's been more durable than I was expecting to be honest.

Just remember that all of these need registration and fencing etc: (In NSW at least)

    • Swimming pool owners must register their swimming pool or spa pool on the NSW Swimming Pool Register.
    • Local councils and accredited certifiers registered with the Building Professionals Board, can carry out inspections of swimming pools.
    • Swimming pool owners must ensure their pools comply with fencing laws. Pools able to be filled to a depth of 300mm or more must be surrounded by a safety barrier separating the swimming pool from any residential building or place adjoining the premises.
    • Fences surrounding pools must be designed, constructed, installed and maintained to meet Australian standards for swimming pools. Please visit the pool safety checklists page on the NSW Swimming Pool Register website for further information.

Absolutely agree. No matter which state you're in, appropriate pool fencing needs to be in place. You can't be too paranoid about water safety.

      • Kids alive, do the five.

      • +1

How did they ever make it out alive without the grubament telling us how to be safe…

        • I guess the point is that some of them didn't…?

        • @mingofmongo: the joke is nobody makes it out alive regardless lol.

I would love one of these with a lockable cover (even though I have no kids). Unfortunately, even with a lockable cover, it must be fenced (in Vic at least) which makes it not worth it. Now, someone tell me why my estate is allowed to have a man made lake on it, no fencing and unsupervised kids running around it all the time? One rule for developers / councils, another for the rest of us I guess…

        • That.. is a really good point! That never occured to me. They have lakes with play equipment next to it, but make you build an enclosure around a pool even if you don't have kids

    • So you couldn't put one of these in your (converted) garage?

      • Indoor pools
Pool safety laws also apply to indoor pools—that is, pools that are completely enclosed by the walls of a building, or on a deck or rooftop where the pool can only be accessed from inside the building.

Indoor pools must have a compliant barrier.

Indoor–outdoor pools (where the pool extends partly into the building) are treated as outdoor pools.

        This means:

indoor pools may use compliant child safety doors
indoor–outdoor pools may not use child resistant doors as the barrier.

So, you can put one in your garage with a child safety door?

        • What about putting one underground?

Are you here to try and make us laugh?

        • @Scab: A garage?

  • How is the power bill running one of these things? Do they warm up enough to enjoy on a winters night? Thanks!

    • +1

I'm in Tas and can vouch for the fact that it stays warm all year around - having said that, in Hobart winters it's simply too cold to go outside wearing just bathers, so we typically pack it up around Easter time, and bring it back out around now-ish.

We run the filter all the time, and just run the heater Thursday through to Sunday night, up to 39 or 40 degrees. Even after a few days with the heater not going it's still around 28-30 degrees in there.

It averages out to around a dollar a day in heating costs - maybe $2 if we run it continually rather than switching off for half the week. Compare that with the cost of entry for the local swimming pool of $20 a session for the family, and the spa ends up on top.

Maximum temperature is 40 degrees, which is usually too hot for us anyway.

  • How long do they last?

    • Six years and ours is finally starting to show its age. Still, compared to >$5k for a rigid hot tub which might last 20-30 years, the numbers add up!
