I figured it is not a bad price for a light-weight (1.7kg) 8th-gen quad-core i5 convertible laptop with a PCIe SSD.

It has a USB Type-C connector, backlit keyboard, and 10-hour battery life.

It comes in just under the GST barrier.

Please note that the "Flex 5" is sold as the "Yoga 520" in certain countries. The comparable model in AU costs $1299, but comes with smaller SSD (128GB).

  • Is the ram upgradeable?

    • I imagine so as a 16GB version exists, but no spare slot available.

  • What is the warranty situation like buying from B&H?

    • +1

No idea, but it says "manufacturer warranty", and that you have to deal directly with the manufacturer. It's a grey import, so warranty is not great. Personally I consider myself self-insured, as the money I have saved from buying grey imports far exceeds any costs of breakdowns.

14". Nice. The prefect screen size, to me. Great balance between portability and practicality.

    • Agreed ive got a 17 inch gaming and a portable 13.3 inch 14 is just right

  • Great. Quad Core i5 with USB-C. Hopefully it supports USB-C PD, and doesn't need 20V.

    Shame it isn't Thunderbolt.

  • Seems like really nice specs for what it is. Lenovo are one of the better manufacturers too. Does this have th ability to use their active pen things for drawing?

    • According to the Lenovo US website, it can be used with the "active pen".

    • Lol you've clearly missed the multiple times they've been caught with rootkits and other pre-installed malware.

Great specs for the price, just a little heavy for a 14". If the warranty situation was clear I'd pick this up, maybe Lenovo locally will offer something similar in the future

    • Most 14" laptops are at least as heavy as this. The Thinkbook ones are 2kg if I'm not wrong.
If warranty is an issue, then do not buy from overseas. But ask yourself how much extra you are willing to pay for the odd chance something goes wrong during the warranty period.

No doubt there will be specials from Lenovo here, but there are barely any laptops with 8th gen CPU for sale here, let alone in this price range. It will be many months before we get prices like this.

        FYI
        e470 is 1.8kg
        t470 is 1.6kg
        x1 carbon is 1.13kg

But overall, it's a great price.

  • watch that our dollar doesnt drop until it ships and you would pay gst and clearing costs

  • Great find, OP! Some confusion about the CPU cores tho : )

Lenovo Flex 5 overview: Powered by a 1.6 GHz Intel Core i5-8250U dual-core processor and 8GB of DDR4 RAM, it can efficiently multitask and quickly access frequently used files and programs.

That's a mistake. Given all the references to the 8th gen 8250u, I think we can be assured it actually has a 8250u, which is definitely quad-core. But i5's ultralow voltage CPU's used to be dual-core, so someone probably got confused.

        Thanks, Number one!

Just ordered one, been looking around for a new laptop for months, thanks for sharing OP :)

  • Seems this model isn't being sold in Australia, just wanted to compare local prices to see if it's worth it - anyone able to find it sold here?

  • Anyone have any idea how this would compare to a ThinkPad Yoga 370?

  • how would this compare to the Acer Spin 7 - https://www.amazon.com/Acer-LPDDR3-Windows-Convertible-SP714…

    • I'd buy a Lenovo over an Acer any day, just for the build quality.

    • And the Spin at this link has a 7th gen processor. This laptop has an 8th gen processor which is a big performance leap as it's now quad-core rather than dual-core.

  • Can't dual screen on this? or?

    • +1

According to the "Lenovo Flex 5 (14 inch) Platform Specifications" (nice thing about Lenovo's are these spec pdfs), the HDMI supports up to 1920x1080@60Hz, and the graphics supports dual independent displays. So I suppose this means that the HDMI is the one external display output.

No mention of the USB type C alt mode. You'd need some kind of USB display adaptor to get additional external displays. I don't have any experience with these though.

  • Anyone can comment on the touch screen sensitivity? Is it comparable to say an iPad?

  • Any other laptops with the new 8th gen processors? im looking to buy one for Christmas.

Still live and just purchased one.

AUD has dropped since this was posted, now well below $1000.

Remember - the value of the goods is what matters. If the value of the goods (not including postage) is below $1000, you are exempt from import duty. If the value of the goods (not including postage) is above $1000 you will be charged import duty for the whole amount of the purchase, including postage.

    • Just bought one now too! Looking forward to receiving.

      • @EspressoDan & @heathy how much shipping for you guys?
Mine to SA is $49.01 US

    • I've learned something today - thanks for this post about the $1k threshold. Informative.

  • Has anyone received their laptop yet?
Can you please see if it qualifies for Lenovo's international warranty? The details on how to check are here:
