AmEx 'Refer a Friend' Program - New Info

Hi, Adele from The Champagne Mile blog here. I partner with AMEX to promote their range of rewards cards, FYI, AMEX have kickstarted a campaign to generate card member awareness in the 'Refer a Friend' program today. Most OzBargainers would be familiar with with the program via the Wiki.

We've written a post about the program today, and there are a few take outs that OzBargainers might find of interest:

Firstly, many would be aware that AMEX allows eligible card members to refer to multiple cards within the same card 'family'. AMEX have recently expanded the selection of cards you can refer to within each 'family'. As an example, the Explorer card now allows referrals to the Platinum Edge and Platinum Charge cards in addition to the Essential card (in the past, you could only refer to the Essential card).

AMEX have also confirmed with us that the bonus points eligible card members can earn for referring someone actually depends on the tier of card product held. So if you hold the Explorer, Qantas Ultimate or Velocity Platinum cards, you'll receive the current rate of 30,000 'referrer' bonus points for a successful referral, regardless of the type of card you've referred someone to. In the same vein, hold the Platinum Edge and you'll always receive 15,000 bonus points as the referrer. This is obviously a benefit for those holding 'high tier' cards like the Qantas Ultimate, Explorer, Velocity Platinum and Platinum Charge.

Secondly, OzBargainers might also be interested to know that the Refer a Friend cap (set at 200,000 bonus points per year) works by the calendar year - not the membership year. This is something that there has been a bit of confusion about in the past. Something to bear in mind if you're lucky enough to get close to reaching your cap!

Cheers, Adele

  • How is this new info? Doesn't look like anything has changed from the current system.

Hi Mad Mouse, as mentioned, AMEX has expanded the cards that eligible members can refer to (the Platinum Edge and Charge have only recently opened up to the Explorer). They have asked us to highlight this with card members.

Also, there has been a great deal of confusion about the bonus points one actually earns when referring another card (this is not explicitly advertised on the referral hub), so hopefully this post clarifies that for people who were wondering. The AMEX refer a friend program is used by a large segment of the OzBargain community and I thought it relevant to highlight this information. Cheers, Adele

  • ah too long post too lazy to read.

Thanks Adele for the heads up. This may explain why when I was calling to potentially close my Explorer, they suggested I move to Platinum Edge.

Do you know if I move Explorer to the Platinum edge, will there be a Credit Check for the switch?

    • Hi, I'm in exact same boat. Going to switch to earn the higher Ascent points. I've heard with a referer you still get the 10k bonus in most cases. Explorer still great to keep, the phone insurance is handy and it earns points on gov and utilities

    • Hi,only AMEX will be able to advise whether a credit check would be applied for a switch to the Platinum Edge. But in the past, when I was offered a downgrade to a lower tier card, I was advised that no credit check would be applied.

Love this travel blog! Nice one Adele :-)

    https://thechampagnemile.com.au/

    • What's with all these links to a third party site that earns income from affiliate referrals??? Now this guy signs up to ozbargain 1 hour ago, is the self proclaimed representative for yet another travel blog and posts yet another link to the champagne mile???

Instead of posting links so you earn referral income, how about you actually post useful information

I personally like the champagne mile blog. Her blog has a helped me few times more so than others Eg pointshack.com.au

And no, I'm no way affiliated with her. Just giving my two cents.

  • cool

  • When it says they cannot have one of the AMEX cards or has held one in past 18 months - does that include if they are a subsidiary cardholder?

eg my wife has the subsidiary card of my Qantas Discovery AMEX - am I able to refer her still and earn the bonus points?
