Where to Download Music? Mostly 80s and 90s.

Hello,

I would like to update my music and was wondering where is the best place to download music ?

There are obviously sites like these ones: https://www.lifewire.com/top-free-and-legal-music-download-s…

…but if somebody here is familiar with other websites , user friendly and easy to navigate.
Thanks for any suggestion:)

      How? VPN?

  • bearshare

    • No longer available

  • Doesn't help you now, but just out of interest there was an amazing private torrent site for music called "what.cd" that had virtually everything. It was shut down though.

    • Was it on "the dark web?"

      • No, it was just a private bt tracker.
        https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/What.CD

        • Yes .. and to gain access you not only needed to get an invite, but you also had to pass a test. A moderator would ask a series of questions. To pass this test one of the things you needed was an understanding of the technologies behind music files, including the use of spectrum analysis to identify music quality, lossless, etc.

        • @noz: You didn't need to pass the test if you had an invite. The test allowed you to join without an invite.

I took the test. It wasn't incredibly hard but it took a day of reading through the prep guide and making notes, another 3-4 hours waiting on IRC for the interview, then another hour to do the actual interview. Worth it though, there was nothing in the world that came close to the library that What had. Imagine being able to search an artist then being taken to a page that lists every single one of their releases with a link to download in either FLAC, WAV, or MP3.

There is a new site that has taken What's place, if you're looking to go down that rabbit hole then google "IRC Interview Prep". I'm not a member but from what I've heard the library isn't as comprehensive as What's was but it's only a year old and growing quickly.

  • The subscription streaming services allow downloads now too. I use apple music because they have a special deal with telstra, but google play music and spotify have offline modes too.

    • Yes I was looking into it today. So the way it works is that I will pay monthly fee e.g. for google play music and can then download some albums/songs and store them on my phone and play anytime then? Even after I will be not paying subscription later for example?

      • They intend for you to keep paying, but they aren't really protected. Paying for content is a choice, copying songs from youtube will work fine if you are happy doing it.

        • What about quality of sound?

Is song downloaded from itunes or google play music much better in quality than song downloaded from youtube?

There is unlikely to be a noticeably difference. iTunes is just the easiest way if you want to pay for music and not pirate content. Apple music and iTunes are also different. Another option might be buying old cds.

  • Download free from youtube.

    • Thats where I will probably start
