Hi, I posted my car in Gumtree he agrees to pay me $18500 via bank but the payment is scheduled for tomorrow, but he wants car and paperwork right now. I am worried that payment didn't show up in my account, how can I give my car, he might cancel it anything.Until the amount show up in my account I am not willing to give my car.But he is putting a pressure on me that I am cheating him.

Why? And start a witch hunt based on a random person posting on a forum. That always ends well… perhaps we need a deal on pitchforks and torches to go with it?

      • crime rarely gets solved without evidence yet when there is criminal tied to evidence, you suggest nothing gets done. Some of us might not fall for these dirty tactics but many hundreds will and continue every year. Today it's a car tomorrow it's someone's life savings. The following day the victim takes their life because they've lost everything. I've been scammed when I was young. The victims and I came together and contacted the police and eventually the lady got prison time. That was only 10k from us but if she'd continue she would have gotten hundred of thousands or millions.

        • If OP suspects he was almost scammed then the only people he should share any information with is the police, not a bunch of Internet forum vigilante keyboard warriors. Who is to say that the buyer isn’t going to post up here saying that they paid for a car via direct deposit and the buyer refused to give them the car. What we read here is only part of the story.

So, again, what possible reason outside of a witch hunt, would it be of any use to post the phone number or any personal details of the “alleged” scammer in this forum? We are not crime solvers. It is not our duty to solve this case and bring anyone to justice.

How would you feel if it was your information that got shared here all because it was just a really big misunderstanding about how banking works and then you had internet vigilante warriors ringing you?

  • Wait for funds to clear. Or bank cheque. Or if seller wants to pay in cash, get them to meet you at the bank with cash and hand it over to the teller. Or if you are with the same bank, meet at the bank and do a transfer. Did my last couple of cars like this

Pretty sure the ozbargain way would be to wait for the money to clear, hold it for a few days to accrue a couple of dollars interest and then return the money to the buyer saying the car has been crashed/stolen

    • Or just move interstate and keep the money while you’re at it?

And that the buyer should go and look for an 80K high yield investment car.

these kind of things won't happen next year after Australian day. instant 24/7 inter-bank transfer is on its way. it's about time!

    • And of course they'll be no way to cheat then. (Yeah, right.) They won't close all loopholes until they've branded everyone like sheep with some chip.

    • +1

You'll still be able to schedule payments for a certain day though.

Scammers will ALWAYS find a way. Otherwise, with all our knowledge, all our technology, how are they still doing it? Dont be so niave as to think one simple fix will solve all your problems.

    • Of course scammers will find other ways to get you, but it should be a lot harder if bank transfer is instant. Maybe they will fallback to oil rig/western union shit, or find some lame excuses 'cannot use bank transfer'.
Golden rule for anytime: Never handover the key until you see the money in your account.

  • Obvious scam.
Don't be surprised when no money shows!

You can cancel scheduled payments any time before the scheduled transfer date. Wait for it to clear. If buyer wanted it today, then they should've paid today. Simple as that.

    @Ops

You probably haven't used internet banking a lot. Any scheduled payment can be cancelled at any given time before the payment is made. Let's say I schedule to pay you 20K on Monday at 9.00AM, I can freely cancel it at the last minute 8.59 AM.

A bank transfer is only legit when it has a transaction receipt number and your correct account details on it/

  • Did you get any photos of the guy that you can post?

  • if the buyer was in a hurry to purchase the car. it's really up to the seller to makes to terms of payment.

  • OP: As with anything in life, learn from your mistakes. The lesson learned here is not to trust anyone who seems to be in such a rush, especially when it comes to a large purchase as this. Think about it: why would anyone want a $20,000 car right this instant? Whats the urgency, and if it was that urgent, why bother why a bank transfer, why not just straight cash etc

Yes there are dodgy people out there, always has been, always will be, its just upto you to protect yourself. Push back, dont be that nice guy, they are the types of people these dodgy people take advantage of.

    • What mistake?? This was just a normal every day transaction until the guy was demanding to take the car and refusing to leave.

What happened? Are you still alive OP?

    • +1

      Yes alive

      • Good OP. Plenty of faceless scams around, it's a whole different ball game when they're standing in your living room.

I wonder what the end-game was though, I mean how long can you drive around in a stolen car before being arrested? Seems really odd. If you want to steal a car it's easier to just go steal one. I'm sure there was more to the game.

        Glad you're safe.

  • OP, The buyer has no good faith to do a business with you. Furthermore, I doubt about his scheduled transfer.
Just hold up the sales until you see the fund is cleared in your own bank account which is taken with a grain of salt.

If you really need a cash sales then simply put it up front about the Sales method of payment.
Next time, it's better to involve a prof. agent to deal with this.
This would save you the unnecessary hassle.

  • It's great that you posted your concerns on this site.
I am very sure that many OZbargainer's here will steer you in the right direction :-)

  • OP, did you get the money?

if not, would you consider an IOU note he wrote on a napkin considered legal tender?

  • +2

    Lots of people still commenting.

The op has said the seller left that night after he was told the police are coming and no money came through.

    Time to end the thread

Publish the name and the phone number of the buyer I say so others are aware. Hate such scams and many elderly and not so internet savvy fall for this.

  • Opinion

Don't sell it until you get cleared fund and transfer of sell documents must be sign by both parties and must verify id

  • +2

Does the buyer happen to work on a offshore oil rig?

  • Yeah and I want Scarlett Johansson naked in my bed. Tell him to shove it.

  • Hey, just wondering couldn't the buyer make payment today and not schedule it for tomorrow. I understand there is a clearance delay because it will be the first time he is transferring funds to your account, but submitting the payment today would eliminate the risk that the buyer will/could cancel the transaction.

    Does that carry any risks?

I've sold a car by this method before + written contract of sale signed by both seller and buyer w/ picture of license.

  • As OP has already resolved the issue, this thread will be closed.
