Digital Electric Portable Keyboard Piano With Closest Sound to Grand PIano

Been wanting this for awhile now but convinced myself many years ago not to get it but I think it is time.

I just want a simple electric keyboard piano that I can play some yiruma and classical pieces on.

Will maybe sometimes plug in some earphones do that is an option.

Nothing too fancy I guess though I don't know how far electric keyboards have come since my highschool days over 10 years ago.

I guess trying to keep this under $300 if possible.

I will be doing the eBay and gumtree rounds later this evening.

I guess bonus if it works with Bluetooth headphones some how to minimize cable nuisance.

Cheers thanks again Ozbargain.

Show me what you got.

Some days I really get the urge to just jam on a piano especially when I visit family with grand pianos.

I have no budget for a grand piano atm so looking for a nice portable piano something I can carry and move around possibly play across my reclining chair on my pc also but I will be mainly playing it at my bed.

I love the sound of real grand pianos but obviously cannot get a portable one cheaply so the best I can get for maybe under $200-300 (high upper budget) would be awesome. I have many headphones I could also plug in so I don't disturb housemates if I decide to play at night or during quiet times in the week.

What are your recommendations and does anyone else play piano portably?

I guess my favourite genre is classical and blues mostly improvisation that sounds like the Sims or fittingly in an Asian soap opera.

Definitely go the gumtree 2nd hand route. Heaps of "1 year old, played twice" examples for 1/4 the RRP

    • Definitely probably going that route I just need some good quality but cheap examples as I don't want to spend too much on this item but also don't want to buy like a $2 kids toy keyboard that doesn't do jack shit.

A new 88-key weighted digital piano with Bluetooth would completely smash your budget, so seconded for Gumtree. Had a quick look and there's a couple of entry-level Yamaha/Rolands that would do nicely.

    • Hi.. any thoughts on Yamaha P-125?

For $300 brand new — maybe something like Yamaha NP12. Only 61 keys though, however we are looking at buying one later this year / early next year for portability as an 88-key won't fit into our boot (already have a upright Kawai at home).

However as suggested above, you'll find better value ones from Gumtree.

    • Would the NP-32 fit in your boot? Squeeze a few extra keys in?

      • Lean it diagonally — possibly fit into the boot. Won't fit into my $300 budget though :) A friend with a Yaris might also need it so we ended up concluding that 61-keys would be the limit.

Also agree gumtree/fb is the way to go. You've already seen my recommendations for a piano, any of those 2nd hand would be fine.

FWIW after I posted looking for a cheap keyboard I ended up getting the aldi one, returning it as it broke in the first 10 minutes, buying one 2nd hand from gumtree for <$150 and playing it for a year. Then when I was sure, I got the Yamaha P115 and a nice stand. I love it :)

I can't think of any piano with BT headphone support… the latency is likely to drive you crazy if it did have BT, unless the sound quality was bad. Keyboards that have BT generally have it for MIDI rather than audio.

  • What about something like this?

    • Only if you're playing one hand at a time, and have small hands. Those are mini keys. Great for synth control, not so great for classical piano :)

    • That is also just a MIDI controller keyboard. It has no sounds built in, it's designed to control audio software on a computer.

    • Also 2 octaves is rather limiting.

  • BTW Digital pretty much implies Electric or rather Electronic. As opposed to Acoustic.

Keyboard and Piano are usually mutually exclusive terms, Keyboard meaning something with soft touch that kids can play, while Piano meaning weighted keys like acoustic pianos.

So really you have to ask yourself if you want a digital keyboard or a digital piano. Doubt if you can get the latter for $300.

You'll want decent headphones otherwise you won't like how you sound. A BT or wireless one would probably break your budget though.

  • Roland E-28 on ebay or gumtree.

  • Merged from Portable Piano with sound closest to a real grand piano
