  • Any good reviews on this one ?

Need to buy one ASAP and wondering if to buy this one or VIOFO A119S For $96.86 ?

    • Well there are 8 good reviews on the JB Hifi page that seem to indicate it's pretty decent. I think we can safely ignore the 1 person who has used it for over a year with it only recording 5 to 10 minutes per trip - they gave it 1 star lol

    • This is a good camera, and being able to buy locally + local warranty is worth it.

  • Isn't it funny so many brand new cars sold today don't have the features of a $98 camera?

Lane Departure Warning: Alerts when your vehicle leaves its driving lane

Forward Collision Warning: Alerts when driving too close to the vehicle in front of you

Front Car Movement Detection: Alerts when the vehicle in front of you moves forward

Speed Cam Alert: Alerts when approaching your saved speed cam locations

Headlight Warning: Detects low light conditions and issues a headlight alert

Speed Limit Alert: Alerts when your vehicle exceeds a pre-set speed limit

It's not funny or strange. It makes perfect sense from a liability/legal point of view. Dashcams are prone to failure in both extreme heat and cold temperatures. Consumers using cheap or counterfeit microsd and unreliable power sources is a problem with after market dashcams. There is also laws in some countries that prohibits video recording in public.

      • +4

You missed the point but anyways

    • I think some manufacturers are doing it but 1 at a time otherwise no sales point if thry introduce all of them together like subaru has lane warning ..honda has side cam or something…front collision brake assistance with others make n model..yeah..

This is a great camera, will be picking another one up now that it is finally on sale again. I think the last sale price was $130. The features like lane departure are gimicky and inaccurate, but the video quality itself is good (can be hard to read numberplates sometimes, but usually it is good enough, and it is good practice to call out the plates if you see something anyway), and I really like that it has park mode.

So, how do people have a camera in the front and the back? Would you need to have a 12V charger in the back of the car too? I'm getting so sick and tired of people tail gaiting me, and I'm worried that if I do have to slam on the brakes that the buggers will try and claim that I was braking on purpose; I'm probably paranoid.

    • +1

Not being paranoid at all, exactly what happened to me when I braked with cars slowing down in front of me. Truck driver behind too close, didn't brake, destroyed my car. Then claimed I was erratic and had braked hard for no reason. Neither of us had dash cams and it ended up being a bit of a mess with the insurance companies.

      • +5

Would have thought it would have been pretty clear cut if the person behind rams your car without any proof that you were driving erratically? Person behind should keep a safe braking distance at all times regardless of how the person in front is driving.. in the end did it go in your favour?

        • +2

Yes went in my favour. A lot of it was my fault in the way I handled myself after the accident, I was not violent but I was very very angry and rude to the Police who attended and I felt were very dismissive of me. Anyway if I had a dash cam it would have provided clear evidence of what happened I guess.

      • Ah jeez, sorry to hear about that. Were you able to sort it out? Do you have a dual camera set up now?

Edit; apologies if that seems insensitive, asking about whether you've got dual camera set up now, I'm more asking if the accident made you want to do something or if you sort of just chalk it up to bad luck and move on?

        • Well you would think so, but I don't. I see the deals here but like your question I have no idea how to set up a rear camera, even after other members have written pretty clear instructions in other threads.

        • @17833: No, honestly I think I get it. Particularly with something like a rear end collision, when you shouldn't be the one who has to take the proactive steps.

        • +1

@17833: get a car with the battery in the boot like mine!!

I wired it from the front of the car to the back. Bought a 3 metre USB cable which plugs into a USB port i installed behind the dash, goes under the side panels then up the side from behind the back seat, goes up to the roof then pops out in the centre of the rear window. The only visible cable is about 5 cm going down the read windscreen/ window and connecting to the camera. That was the easiest way with my car.
      not hard just time consuming.

      • Oh ok. Thanks for the info shapers. Honestly, it feels a bit beyond my capabilities but sounds like you sorted it.

    • +1

Yes your additional rear camera would need it's own power source either in the form of a 12v socket in the rear if you have one, or if you don't have one, you would need to either run a long extension cable from the front, or if your'e handy with diy electronics, tap into a 12v accessory wire from the fuze box and run it to the rear.

      • Oh ok, yeah running something from the fuse is probably beyond me I think, but thanks for the info clem0ximus.

        • +2

Depending on what plug the dash cam uses, this will be your friend then

        • I included the video from my rear dash cam(& front dash cam) with my insurance claim when a smart car bumped my car from behind.

Basic wiring of double USB & 12V adapter plugged into front 12V.
Then 1.5m USB cable up to left side of sun visor, under sun visor to front dash cam.
3m USB cable under front passenger seat & on to rear cam which is mounted on a plastic lid sitting on the rear bench.
Means video is upside down but that's easy to fix in VLC.

It doesn't look neat & tidy but black USB cables don't stand out anyway.

        • @susmind: I don’t think the better half would allow me to do that, but thanks for the suggestion.

U dont need 2 cams seperately unless u get something like this http://www.elinz.com.au/buy/dash-cam-dual-camera-reversing-r…
