These computers are hardly bargains they are very very old hardware, probably used continuously for 4-5 years. I would bet any amount of money there would be bulging or leaking caps inside the machine. You;r better off building a Low low end PC for the extra $250-$300

    • -2

Or buy a prebuilt Decent Decent pc for $500

i can understand why not everyone needs professional or high end computers. but there really is no need for low low end computers in this day and age where you get superceded in 6 months or less

      • +3

I agree to all the above, but some people simply cannot afford hundreds of dollars, and this would be a great starter for the basic home user..

        • +3

A $200 netbook is better value actually cause well most people paying $150 for a PC will be the first PC they still need a monitor so it's already $200+

      • Well $450 would build the equivalent of a dell $500 pre built in my mind. I use the term low low end because really you can't buy anything lower thats brand new really

    • Agree to BenMHarvey, I would not suggest anyone to buy these computers. Government computers usually left running 24 hrs in their past 3-4 years. Your $150 would only likely to last a year.

      • +1

        3-4 years?

The P4 2.8GHz came out over 8 years ago. Think 7-8 years.

        • Yea but as if the government would've gotten the P4 2.8GHz when it came out. They're always behind!

  • Its all dependent on the purpose of the PC.
If RTA just wanna grab a PC to run RTA's knowledge test, this PC will probably be too good for it, but if you are talking about fancy multimedia stuff, this pc probably isn't an ideal pick. Still, I have to agree with the above, $200 bucks for a bundle (including monitor), is not to much of a bargain for used computers :\

  • I filled my otto bin with similar spec hardware last week, I literally couldn't give it away! :(

  • Does it even have a monitor? I paid $99 for a dual-core Pentium D 3 Ghz system… and that was 6 months ago!

  • BenMHarvey's post above makes a whole lot more sense then buying something old and redundant.

  • I agree with $200 Netbook idea as cheap PC.
The Network would already have a monitor, webcam and a WIFI receiver inside.
these are the things that the Pentium lacks and would cost around $150 extra.

consider the noise on these old machine vs the Netbook.
if you really really cannot afford a $200 comouter, power consumption may make you think again.
(the Pentium would consume a lot more power compared to the NetBook)

    and did I mention portability?

This has less grunt than a basic netbook (ie the $200 emachines posted earlier). It will certainly be more faulty. Not a good buy in any way. Your grandma deserves better than this.

    Market Value and Parts:
    ~$0 P4 CPU (used)
~$0 Shitty old P4 motherboard with onboard gfx and sound (used)
    ~$5 1GB ddr2 ram (used)
    ~$30 IDE DVD RW (new)
~$45 Seagate 500GB hard drive (new)
    ~$5 Cheap Keyboard+Mouse combo (used)
    ~$10 no brand Case (used)
    ~$10 low wattage PSU (used)
    Total market value: ~$100

Notes: new prices taken from MSY pricelist. used prices are worked out on the understanding that residual value for most computer parts over 2 years old is $0.

Pretty much spot on with the 2nd hand prices there albeit DVD DL Drives can be bought for $19 brand new

  • +2

If you add the cost of a Windows XP licence then that increases the above market value to over $200. So, could be a good buy.

    • +1

Very true. There are legitimate ways to get very cheap xp licenses, but the person who would use this computer is not going to know them.

  • +3

not cheap at all, very average price. For this price, you could buy a dell or HP one.

    http://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/24893 that's 6 months ago.

This is better spec than my current pc…I'm sad… :P

A better deal would have been to buy the emachines 350 in another Ozbargain deal (but now sold out unfortunately) and a LCD monitor, and you get a low power consumption desktop plus laptop. Win!

  • Could this be used for storage server, eg. does it have spare SATA ports? 500gig is a decent start towards storage.

    • I think it would be a waste of electricity. You'd be better off buying a NAS.

On the other hand low end NAS have poor performance.
