Degree in Finance vs Accounting

I'm currently studying Electrical Engineering/Commerce double degree in Melbourne.

I am trying to get some info related to jobs in Accounting vs Finance so I can make an informed decision.

Mainly wondering about scope for jobs in the near future and also which work would more interesting or enjoyable.
I'll only graduate in 2020 :/

Cheers!

  • Accounting and Finance opens you up to a lot of choices in careers but all very competitive. Some options being :

    • Accountant / book keeping.
    • Auditing
    • Taxation - Corporate and individuals.
    • Financial planning / para-planning.
    • SMSFs , fund manager work.

I was in wealth management for 10+ years. That was very interesting because it encompassed so much of finance, eg wealth creation, retirement planning, insurances, taxation and SMSFs. But the pay is not great until you hit the upper tiers or have some serious skillz.

Most engineers i know who did the double did finance and engineering. So that's what I'm doing :).

  • Electrical Engineering/Accounting or Finance is a interesting combination. What are you looking to get out of electrical engineering?

What would your ideal job be?

Personally I found finance more enjoyable due to practicality of it compared to accounting but each to their own. There is a bit of overlap between the 2 so you should be able to get a taste of both before you fully commit. I could be wrong as Universities may differ but you may not have to choose the major to specialise in till 2nd year which gives you the 1st year to get a taste of both to see what you enjoy more.

I definitely think that Finance is better paired with engineering if that helps. I study both accounting and finance and find them both enjoyable! I have a lot of friends who also went down the finance/engineering pathway.

I am an Auditor (studied accounting).I suggest you go with the finance path. Reason being, accounting concepts will be easily explained to you by the relevant department when you are working as an engineer but they won't necessary have the finance knowledge. Additionally, finance is more interesting where as accounting is mostly paper pushing and made of bullshit concepts that don't necessarily mean any thing in the real world. Cash and cash flow in a business is king and to understand the basics requires no accounting knowledge.
