LG V20 H990DS (Aussie Stock) $441 @ Allphones eBay

Morning All

Great phone with all the bells and whistles (4GB RAM, 64GB, SD card, Quad DAC Audio, removable battery, SD820). Has a pretty active LineageOS community as well. I think this is the cheapest this has been yet (for local stock). I'm waiting for it to hit $400 local before I pull the trigger (I gave in and bought one) but thought this might interest some for the local 2 year warranty and GST back if heading OS soon

I believe Allphones is associated somehow with Mobileciti so aftersales support should be pretty good too.

Cheers

Got one for similar price from mobileciti couple of months ago, very satisfied so far. Big step up from s6

  • band 28?

  • +4

Bit gun shy with LG phones since my G5 packed up (boot loop failure)

    • Yeah, that's why I want local stock

    • +2

How long did it last? I'm using a G5 at the moment 😓

      • About 2 weeks after someone warned me to sell it and get a new phone

Not sure it has a timeframe per se. Mine lasted 2yrs I think

        • Hmm mine is a bit over a year now

  • +3

Wow a removable battery, but does it have a notification led?

    • +4

agree it is very important feature

phone without notif led shouldnt be called a phone.
how can we know there are missing calls smses texts?

      • +3

The second screen displays missed calls and incoming messages.. it's a one line display "separate" from the main screen

    • +2

      Yep

    • +5

As mentioned, the V20 has an 'always on' section of the screen which displays all notification icons. The next step up from a neanderthal LED

      • Does this use more battery than a notification led?

        • Absolutely no idea

        • +1

Yes it does. You can schedule the second screen to turn off at certain times.

  • +2

Had mine for 4 months now and it's great!

    • I gave in and bought one lol

  • Urgh, I caved and bought one. It's going to replace my wifes ageing LG G3.

  • This or HTC U Ultra?

    • Same confusion.. but looking at online reviews, battery isn't that great on HTC u Ultra.

      • Battery is replaceable on the V20 FWIW

        • Yes.. I currently have samsung note 3 which by all means running great.. only gripe I have is it lasts only 4-5 hours now.. even with new battery purchased from samsung UK.. so looking for phone with better battery life.. replaceable batteries are great. No need of carrying power banks..

        • Zerolemon also make a 10000 mAh battery for it as well.

          https://zerolemon.com/collections/lg/products/10000mah-trice…

      • Yes, HTC has better CPU (SD821), but Dual Sim you only can get is from grey import.
LG has better looking and AU stock, but CPU less power (SD820).

        • +2

There really isnt that much of a real world difference between the SD820 and SD821 so I wouldnt call it a defining factor

    • +2

If you use the camera and listen to or record music there is no competition. The B&O Quad DAC and f1.8 lens are brilliant.

      • So if camera and music are import go for the LG?

        • Yep. Some people complain about the supplied B&O plugs, and I found them a bit annoying at first - I need the stems up, not down - but when sitting right, they are really good although some reviewers seem not to like a decent flat response. Recording is great as well, it can apparently handle up to 132 decibels. I'll take their word for it, I couldn't and wouldn't want too.
With the DACs, you can drive high-impedance audiophile sets with your 24-bit/192kHz FLAC or WAV files for the best sound you can expect outside a studio or an audiophiles dedicated listening den…

        • +1

@terrys: Great options for recording audio as well with adjustable bass cutoff filters. Great for concerts or festivals with loud bass that just distorts.

    • Wow the HTC U Ultra has mostly better specs: https://www.gsmarena.com/compare.php3?idPhone1=8238&idPhone2=8519#h990ds,,

      • +2

        On Paper. However:

        LG: - 32-bit/192kHz audio
        - B&O Play certified
        - 24-bit/48kHz audio recording
        - Active noise cancellation with dedicated

        HTC:- 24-bit/192kHz audio
        - Active noise cancellation with dedicated mic

Then go down the bottom, click on "Compare photo/video", select "low light", then move the focus over the picture of Lincoln on the $1, the picture of Darwin on the UK note, and the map of the underground.
LG know what they are doing with cameras and sound, HTC not so much…

  • Is this not a better deal for AU stock @ AU $402.30 with PERK10 code added http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/LG-H990DS-V20-Black-64GB-16MP-4G-…

    • +1

Not sure if that's au stock. Just looks like some dodgy au warranty for 1 year.

      • Ah ok, thanks for the reply. Just noticed also comes with an au adapter so likely suspect.

    • +2

From the listing that you linked (under 'Customer Services'):

this is an overseas model with travel adaptor and not local stock

      • Cancelled that

  • Ordered. Was going for a Xiaomi note 4x for 200ish, but I listen to music and take a lot of photos. Removable battery and better camera is a no brainer for 200 or so more… Not to mention the local warranty.
    Thanks!

  • +3

    Any v30?

    • I doubt there would be any 'bargain' deals for the new flagship just yet

  • Would anyone know if any local shop would have a demo to pick up and hold. Looking at this for my partner, but worried it would be too big for her to hold. Thanks.

  • Yeah the camera on v20 is great. Used the wide angle for pictures and videos and images looks great.
Got no issues with the supplied b&o earphones.
I don't think the built in dac works when connected to Bluetooth headphones though. I don't see the high audio icon when in Bluetooth compared to wired headphones

    • +1

No, only for wired connections. Not surprising, given that their main purpose is to convert the digital code to an analogue current to drive higher impedance units, whereas Bluetooth is compressing and transmitting a digital signal for processing by the receiver. It isn't "HiFi", the analogue [earphone] output is.

  • Is this worth the extra cost over the Moto G5 Plus? I like to take photos and have a few apps on my phone.

  • +1

I'm happy with my V20, have had it for a few months now.

One complaint though- it is too big! I'm someone that likes to keep my phone in my pocket, and this phone has fallen out more than a few times. If I could by the exact same phone but in about a 5" screen size, that would be perfect.

Also, when it comes to root access / custom roms, there isn't much for this variant. It is possible to get root now thanks to the method described here:

    https://forum.xda-developers.com/v20/development/dirtysanta-…

I'm not sure on the status of custom roms like lineageOS etc- last I heard some people had got them working but were having issues with the camera.

  • +3

I've owned the phone for 11 months now.
To be honest it does the job for a cheapie. I'm not sure why people are saying the camera is great, in my opinion it's not. The night shots are garbage. When you compare photos of say galaxy s7 and this device, the differences are noticeable and the galaxy is miles ahead.
The battery is starting to last about 1/2 day with average usage. There is noticeable screen burn when you are switching apps and sometimes the second screen won't work as expected. I can see this phone lasting till about mid next year and then i'll get something else. But for $400 a pop i would of hoped it would make it atleast 2 years.
EDIT: oh and you can't root the DS version. Spew!

    • +3

Going to disagree on a few of your points:

-Camera is fine for me, although I don't do many night shots so I'll take your word on that one.

-Battery life, I can get two days if I really try. On a typical day I'll plug it in to charge at night and it will have about 70% left. Yours almost sounds like its faulty. No issues with screen burn for me.

-You can indeed root the DS version, see the link in my previous post.

      • Battery life was like yours until 9 months later. Screen burn goes away after awhile but its just annoying. Id be happy to hear how your phone holds up after a year. But reading around lots of forums I am not the only one with the above.

    • "The night shots are garbage."
On auto, yes, but on manual with AEL off, as good as the earlier gold standard of the G4, only without the boot-loop.

  • pulled the trigger… almost bought a grey import but i figured the extra $40 was worth it for 2 years legit aussie warranty given my history with LG phones (2 LG G2 died/bootlooped, LG G4 bootlooped, LG V10 batteries swelling)

  • I'd say for a 10% difference with the imported vs aussie any less than one in 10 failure rate (probably less) would make it worth the saving.

GST is 10% btw, often explains a few things.

  • +1

    Great work OP - thanks!

This will replace our now "boot looped" LG G4. V20 offers decent screen, decent price, local warranty and B28.

LG have a rather nice Android "personality" on their phones, less intrusive than our 'business' Sammy phones but a step up from vanilla Nexus/ Motorola.

  • So is this phone better than the G6? I use my phone for shooting photos and videos too, so that would be a deciding factor also…

    • +1

As I remember G6 has better CPU. G6 should be compared with V30.

      • Thanks mate!

    • +1

      They are different.
Dxomark rates the camera of the v20 higher than the G6 even though the G6 has more megapixels (if you get sucked into that hype).

The CPU is an 820 Vs 821 so it's a marginal difference.

It's worth noting that the v20 has 64gb internal storage Vs only 32gb on the G6.

    • +1

Hi montorola I thought this was a pretty good youtube video comparing the two https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=adZ8HAZ-SQA&t=40s

      • Thanks mate! :D

Jeez that vid makes it harder because both phones are great!!!

        • Been looking at the two for a while, this is an extremely good price for Australian stock so very tempted. If looking at Oz stock, the G6 is about $100 more in this deal but has 32gb https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/337324

    • +1

I picked up a G6 64gb dual Sim just recently for 350 with almost 1 year warranty left on receipt. Absolute bargain.

      • Wow well done! Was this new or second hand?

        • +1

Second hand. I thought something might have been hella dodge or it may have had hidden problems. I thought perhaps even a blocked signal phone due to theft.

Everything was sweet though, no issues.

Would probably still go for a new V20 over the G6, if it could be had for 400 or less.

        • @Bamboozle:

Still, that's pretty awesome deal for a G6! nice one

  • +3

I was really disappointed in mine for a variety of reasons. A recent update has pretty much alleviated all those niggling issues and cemented in me keeping this phone until the Pixel 3/Note 9 release next year.

The only issues that remain are:

Slow/inconsistent ambient display settings. In a pitch dark room, it'll display 100% brightness for some reason.
Poor Cellular reception - don't know if it's the phone or Telstra, but my 6P was much better when I was on Optus. I think it might be a combination of the two. More often than not I find myself on HDSDPA/3G in the heart of the city.

Sound quality through the Quad-DAC is excellent.

Photos and videos are decent, especially so if you use manual mode.

I do miss having regular updates and stock Android, as this phone is still on Android 7.0 - but it is a very stable and polished version of Nougat which is better than a buggy Oreo.

Battery life is okay - be sure to set timings on your second screen and look at app usages.

There's reported issues of the thermal paste used by LG to be of a low quality, so under strenuous use it can get warm and become sluggish due to throttling. Some users open it up, as it is relatively easy to do so (no waterproofing) and with the application of Noctua thermal paste, see a big improvement.

I wish more phones went LGs route with dual lenses - one telephoto, one wide. It's a lot of fun.

    • So dumb question…..when you shoot video or take pictures, it only uses one camera at a time?

It doesn't use both cameras to create a wide photo/video?

      • Correct. You can zoom in and out which will automatically switch between the two with a slight stutter.

        • Ohhhh right, thanks for clearing that up. I kept thinking it used both at the same time to 'join' the photos to create that extra wide shot.

Hmm, in that case might look at Sony's XZ Premium haha

  • Can I use this phone in Japan ? Not a tech person but would like to buy a phone i can use as a phone and camera as well so ozbargain community's input of this phone's camera quality is one of the major deciding factor for me to buy or pass.

    • Maybe start by reading the many comments about the camera above.

  • Oh well, back to Android from Windows 10. My Nokia 1520 is starting to have a few hiccups, will keep that as my backup. I think the V20 should be a good replacement. Was going to wait for the V30 but just as happy with the V20. Camera and music is my main requirement and I won't pay over $500 for a phone ever.

    • I was going to hold out for the V30 for myself and give my Pixel to my wife, but for $441 I figured the V20 would be an easy transition for her coming from a G3 and then I can try and justify the V40 (or what it will be next year) for myself.

Slightly off topic but I really wish I could have gotten a hold of a 1520. They struck me as a really good overall phone and I never got the chance to dive into WM10 aside from a 530 that does duty as the FM radio in our living room

      • +2

The 1520 was and is an awesome phone and on Windows 10 it's buttery smooth. Just a pity that Microsoft have pulled out of the mobile phone business. The lack of apps was annoying but No updates to existing apps is my biggest gripe now. Windows 10 OS on the 1520 never really crashed, it just worked but the developers have left.

Going to stop typing now and go hug my Betamax.

  • There is the LG Q8 coming out soon with dust/waterproof and same specs as the V20 just smaller phone in size.
But yeah, who knows when and how much.

    • +1

That's 5.2 inch screen though, battery not swappable, etc. so not quite the same specs.

      • In technical words yes, but we know they can't achieve the dust/waterproof without giving up removable battery.

0.5 inch of screen size difference.. I'd be surprised to see non-tech guys pick up the screen size difference lol

        • Not true. The Samsung galaxy S5 was waterproof to an extent and maintained a removable battery

        • @edrift:
With BIG limitations, I have the S5. Third device, first was under water for 3 minutes, gone.
Second had water in the protective case from the shower condensation, gone too.

  • Did anyone get theirs shipped yet?
My tracking number hasn't updated past the shipping info received part for two days.
Not sure if Australia Post is still having issues with their system.

    • Mine is waiting for me at the post office, but I paid the $9-odd for express post

      • Lucky you… Wish I had paid the extra… Though at least with the delay it'll allow my USB C cable and glass screen protector time to arrive too

        • If it makes you feel any better, I bought the phone then realised I probably should get a case and screen protector as well but didn't buy them in the same order so missed out on 10% on them

    • Ready for collection in the city, I think 2 days it took with standard post.

      • mine arrived this morning.

The Australia Post scanning must still be messed up as there was no scan for hte receipt of the phone, just that the postage info was received… then magically it arrived this morning and the scans showed it as delivered.

Impressed with the speed of delivery given it was standard parcel post.

  • +1

Exceptional service from these guys. I ordered mine around midday yesterday, got a shipment notification at 4:30pm. It arrived in Brisbane 6:30am this morning and was at my post office by 12:30pm today ready for collection. Given the estimated arrival date was Wednesday next week, this is epic.

  • Hey all, I'm planning to travel within the next 30 days…so how does TRS actually work? Do I need the phone in the box, untouched and etc? Or could I use it, put it back in temporarily and pretend I'll never return with it? What's the usual procedure? (I'd really like to use this phone ASAP as well before I leave)

    • You need to bring the tax invoice/receipt (preferably with your name on it, but it shouldn't matter under $1000) and the phone itself (don't need the packaging or anything) to the TRS counter at whichever international airport you will be at. They then give you a brief rundown that you may be recharged the tax if the device is brought back to the country yada yada. They'll then credit you the amount into your bank account (I think I just gave them my bank card, can't remember exactly).

      • Thanks! What are the chances that they will check for the phone on re-entry?

        • +1

Pretty low. They're probably more concerned with people reclaiming thousands (or tens of thousands) in tax rather than one person claiming a phone.

        • @dqtl74: Thank you so much! Greatly appreciate your advice and help :)

  • Bought one, Thanks ebosh

  • Now a few days with my LG V20 after transferring from my Nokia 1520.
    Positives:
    Lots of apps
    Great screen
Camera is good, maybe slightly better than the Nokia but it is too close to call
Very good low light camera shots

    Negatives:
Android is still a filthy OS compared to Windows 10
No dedicated camera button, press the LG button and the back pops off :-)
Audio through headphones is good but the Nokia can drive bigger headphones
No underlying graphics equalizer unlike Windows 10 OS
The Nokia 1520 can be viewed under full sunlight automatically
External speaker is shite compared to the 1520

I have to say, if Windows 10 mobile on the Nokia 1520 had the apps of Android, it would be the greatest device ever.
Saying that, for $441 the V20 is a good phone and I will keep using it for a little longer though my 1520 is still working, might go back and use the V20 as my goto phone when the 1520 fails.

    • the Nokia can drive bigger headphones… equaliser…

Really? Have you turned the Quad DAC on? I'd be staggered if the 1520 could drive the same, let alone bigger, headphones. Happy to be proven wrong though (plus I don't have any decent headphones yet). And there is definitely an equaliser on the V20

      • I have a pair of Sony MDR-1RNC Mk2 headphones and out of the box the Nokia had more grunt though I have now found out this is not due to the hardware but Android. Installed the equalizer app and then it all came to life, plenty of grunt. With DAC it was OK but with the combination of DAC and equalizer app, the headphones are now fantastic.

I just have to get used to the setting up of Android. Starting to warm to the phone now :-)

  • For info, I have gone back to the Nokia for now as it is just better as a work phone for notifying me and keeping me up to date with meetings etc. Microsoft Office is just better integrated than Android though I guess that was to be expected.
Other things, the apps on Windows are limited but Twitter on Windows doesn't have advertising every second post.. Dam horrid on Android. Spotify can't be made the default audio app on Android, that is annoying but more the fault of the App than the OS.

Will be happy to move over to the V20 once the Nokia starts to fail but not yet.
