Finding The Best Price on a VW Tiguan - Dealer Warned about Good Prices Meaning You Could Wait Forever for Your Car

Hi guys.
I'm looking at buying a fully loaded VW Tiguan with the moon roof, driver assist package and the R-Line styling.
I went to 3 dealerships which gave me various prices (was surprised much the prices varied)
- 64k (arrive in May)
- 65k (arrive in January)
- 60k (arrive in March)
- 67k (arrive in March)

The guy that gave me 60k was the dealer principal and actually seemed like the most trustworthy out of them all.
He wouldn't write that price down however.

Anyway, I rang up another dealership and said that I'd been given a figure of 60k and he said that there are dealers out there that will give you a great price but you will be waiting forever for the car and to make sure its written in the contract the date it arrives. He said he has seen it all the time where a really good price is offered but the due date of the car comes and goes and you end up waiting forever for your car.

Is this common practice or just car salesman speak?

  • Usually once you place an order you should be able to track the progress of your car (build date, shipping date etc.) directly with Volkswagen. You could check this with Volkswagen customer care. usually the delay on the car would be due to delay in shipping or customs which is beyond the dealer.

I believe that the dealer has 3 months from the due date to actually deliver the car, or you can cancel the contract. So whatever date you are given, be prepared to wait up to 3 months more.

buy one secondhand - im seeing current models for $32K - crazy to throw $30K away

But it won't be the top model with R line pack.

  • $60k is near full retail for a 162 with R line pack.

I wouldn't pay a cent more for faster delivery, you can ask the dealer to give you a tracking number.

When you're playing dealers off against one another, yes, this type of thing is completely normal. The other dealer is trying to sow doubt in your head to bring you back to their dealership.

In a general sense it's not in a dealer's best interests to delay delivery of a vehicle that's in their stock, because it costs them money to hold stock, so ask them up front what their expected delivery date is and lock that in as a 'worst case' outcome.

Dealers can and do swap stock among one another, so it is possible that the dealer might be able to swap something in from another dealer and deliver sooner, but you shouldn't count on it.

At those sort of figures I'd be asking for a full price breakdown, LCT could account for a significant part of that price variance, when it comes to LCT a couple of hundred dollars difference on the price of the car itself can make thousands of dollars sifference.

Make sure all the dealers are giving you a drive away price. Make sure the 60k dealer doesn't then throw delivery on top of that price.

  • Thanks for the responses. I assumed the 60k would be drive away but I suppose I should have asked.
I checked and LCT isn't required for this car.

  • There is a long waiting list for this model with the extras you want. I ordered the same car minus the sunroof, and total drive away price was $56228 for a MY18 car. Ordered mid August and just received email to say it has been built and will be shipped shortly. Check the VW Watercooled site. There is a thread on prices and waiting times.

    • Did you really get it for $56228? Where did you get that price? Was it the 140 or the 162 that you got?
The moon roof is a 2k extra.. so sounds like you got a good deal.
What were your tricks for getting that sort of price?
Do you know where that thread is?

      • Yes I got it for the price quoted. I62, metallic paint, R Line, DAP, on road costs and full tank of fuel. I went through a broker - NLC. I looked at the prices being quoted here - http://www.vwwatercooled.com.au/forums/f238/how-much-did-you… and told the broker I expected something similar. The dealer he got that price from is Nepean Motor Group, so maybe you can get it cheaper by going direct to them, thereby cutting out the broker's commission which is no doubt included in the price.

        • Hey mate. I gave NLC a call and geeze I'm glad I did. They got me one with DAP, moonroof and R-Line for $57,848. Pretty stoked with that price! The best part is..they say they can get it in December!
I rang Nepean Motor Group but because they are in NSW, I'd have to buy it without on-road costs and really couldn't be bothered in organising everything to get it registered down here.

Thanks for putting me onto those guys!

        • Good for you. Sounds like you got a good deal.

        • @lockmc: Does the cost breakdown show the GST component

        • @Klevakiwi:

I've only signed the order form which just shows a drive away price.

        • @lockmc: I get that it says drive away, but the synic in me and a life in the motor trade, and dealing with Lease Company smoke and mirror quotes says you should be picking up the phone to confirm it includes GST.

  • Buying a brand new car was the worst retail experience I've ever had.

My Golf was expected to take 10 business days for delivery. It ended up taking 11 weeks. They never gave me updates, and it always me who had to call them about it (when they would actually take my call that is). Even when I spoke to them they had no idea. They quoted me incorrectly for the extended warranty twice. The finance guy was too busy literally laughing to himself at the numbers on his computer to give me straight answers. Luckily I didn't need financing, who knows what I may have ended up with. They lied that the extended warranty was offered by Volkswagen as a continuation of the normal warranty. It isn't, it's a separate 3rd party warranty. And multiple people from the same dealership gave conflicting guess-work answers when asked about certain features of the car.

    • VW Extended Warranty is backed by Allianz. It does however give all the same coverage as VW's Warranty. Ditto the Skoda extended warranty.

This is in such high demand and it's a game of supply V demand. Many dealers are asking above RRP for anything that's deliverable this side of Christmas, and for good reason.

There are people out there willing to pay the $$$.

Let me know if you want to chat more, I'm from a metro Melb Volkswagen dealership.

  • I've just spoken to a broker who assures me that any dealer claiming to deliver the R-Line before May is lying through their teeth.
He claims that dealers will tell you a much earlier date so that they can sell a car.. but won't realistically supply it until many months later.
    Is there truth in this?

  • Some observations from a retired General Sales Manager of 2 Large Sydney VW Dealerships.
Sooner or Later you need to sit down at a dealership with a Salesperson or Sales manager you are comfortable doing business with and work your way through it.
Bouncing prices from one dealer to the other is not progressing the process, and will just leave you with more brain damage and nothing achieved. Buying a big ticket item can be stressful, yet with what is really an emotional purchase there should be a degree of enjoyment in it as well.
Once you have decided who and where to buy from and a price, here are a couple of suggestions . Most dealers use an ERA NET software system, which will generate a standard MTA Purchase order for you. Until you have signed it and it has been co signed it is only a piece of paper.
The order should show all Factory options, and Dealer Fit options, these will be in 2 different fields.
Dealer Delivery, Rego, CTP and stamp duty will also be itemised. In the bottom left on the front Page is a field for an estimated delivery date. You MUST have a date entered into this field. Ideally from the ERA System, but if not hand written will do. In the notes section at the bottom just have a note put in to say that the date has been hand written in by whoever the sales person is. The note needs to be initialled by you and the salesperson.
On the back of the purchase order in terms and conditions, you will see that you are able to rescind the contact in writing if the vehicle is not delivered with 30 Days of the estimated delivery date. So Estimated 25/02/2018, dealer has a month after that date.
Assuming your car is a factory order, it is difficult for the Dealer to give you a firm delivery date until the car is Preferenced by the factory. Once preferenced they will be able to give you a build date. Transit is in the lap of the gods, it could sit on a wharf for one week or 3 before it is on a ship.
To explain preferenced, you go into your local fish and chip shop and order 2 pieces of fish and $2 chips, and she writes your order down takes your money, and leaves the order on the counter. Nothing has happened and nothing will happen.
When she gives your order to the cook, and he starts preparing it , your order has been preferenced. Hope this helps, enjoy your fish and chips

  • How did you go in the end lockmc? did you get a better price than 60k for full loaded 162?

    • Yep - I was always after the 140tdi.
I went through NLC - car brokers.
THey got it for 57500.. and delivered it in January.. many months earlier than what the other dealerships were quoting..so couldn't be happier :)

      • nice price! is that with metallic paint or white ? i presume NLC look interstate too?

        • Yep it's the white one. I assume its metallic.
I'm not sure if they look interstate- I'm based on the Mornington Peninsula in Victoria and they sourced one from Shepparton (3+ hour drive). The dealer drove the car down to my house and the paperwork was done in a matter of minutes. Very easy transaction.

        • @lockmc:

Nice! how are you finding the car? any minor/major problems? many dealers have told me it's a very popular model at the moment and there are some wait times.
