Dyson Vacuum Help!

Hi everyone,

I've been making my way through the forums about Dyson vacuum cleaners.

I've been considering buying a cord free hand held for a while now, in particular the v8 absolute.

Obviously Dyson has a few much cheaper models…is the v8 absolute worth the extra cost?

This will be my only vacuum cleaner for a 3 bedroom house. No children. Combination of tiles and carpet.

I was thinking a cord free as there is stairs and I'm not very strong so struggle pulling my current vacuum cleaner around.

Would love any thoughts and options on the v8 model and whether it is worth the extra money.

Thanks!

  • They are both very good. I have the V6 standard and my parents bought the V8 after using mine. I don't notice a huge difference. Just be aware of size/battery limitations- on my V6 it doesn't take much to fill it up and the battery life is around 20 minutes.

    • I am aiming for the V6 Slim as the price difference is pretty large compared to the V8 for what seems like minimal gains and not much extra suction power if at all. Also I don't mind making a few more trips to the rubbish bin to save a few dollars and waiting some more for the charge as long as the performance between the two is similar.. my extensive findings have shown me that there is not much difference but I could always be wrong.

      • Thanks for your reply! I'm thinking the battery life is really the only big difference…decisions!

        • I've found battery life on a stick vac isn't as important because rather than vacuuming the whole house we do a room or two at a time. Cordless is really convenient, so you can grab it and do one room in a couple of minutes and put it back on the charger. With corded I find I feel like i need enough time to do the whole area if I've gone to the trouble of getting it

  • the biggest selling point if you compare the 2 is battery life, where the v8 has double the usage time.
This is something to consider if you have pets and/or have large living areas.

    • Thank you! It is a decide size house so the extra battery life would definitely be handy.

  • personally don't like Dysons, but this is a good price for the v6

  • I have used a few different Dyson, Electrolux, and Miele vacuums over the years. Honestly, even a top-end stick vacuum like the V8 won't be enough to adequately clean your whole house, especially the carpeted areas. If you use only the V8 for a couple of months, and then vacuum your entire house with a proper barrel vac, you'll be shocked and how much more dirt and fluff you pull out.
Stick Vacs are great as your sole vacuum if you live in a 1 bedroom apartment. In a house your size, I would recommend getting a V6 on sale to use for spot cleaning, or on tiled areas (you could use it on the stairs as well), and good barrel or upright vacuum for cleaning out your carpets.
You could get away with just the V8 if you only have 1-2 bedrooms with carpet and the rest is hard flooring. If all three bedrooms + hallway + stairs have carpet then the V8 won't be sufficient.

    • Thank you. The three bedroom rooms are carpet and everywhere else is tiles. I'm more concerned about the weight of carrying around a barrel vac as I struggle with my current one.

I might pop over to Harvey Norman today and check out the other Dyson options to compare.

    • I'm thinking I agree with you! Are you able to recommend a Dyson barrel vacuum?

      • To be honest they're all pretty decent, it depends mainly on your budget. I haven't used either of the two newer models (Cinetic Big Ball and Big Ball Origin), there's a few variations on them, but the only difference is the heads, the actual body/motor are the same. I'm currently using an Electolux Ultraflex, which I like, but it does take up a lot of storage space. Miele are also great, the C3 is meant to be the best one, but I've only used the C2 which I thought was quite good. The only issue is they use bags, so that might rule them out if bags aren't your thing.
If you're concerned about weight I would say go into a store and have a go at picking up a few and moving them around. Good luck!

    • What's a good barrel vac these days? Miele C3 any good? I have no idea about quality vacuums just started researching them mainly this year since I moved out.

      • Probably checking out Choice might be worth doing, but I've got the DC37C origin with seperate turbo head (bought it after market). I've always found it be quite good, the canister doesn't hold a great deal, the cord isn't super long but it does seem to pick up a lot of crud, and it's pretty loud. I will occasionally use an air-compressor to blow out the dust from the canister, and seriously the amount of dust that comes out of the thing is like a diesel throwing out fumes when it's revving it's guts out, just clouds of dust come out of the thing.

I don't have any particular preference for bags or no bags but when I empty the canister I do feel a bit like I'm being covered in dust, which isn't great.

I have an Electrolux, which we bought when we first moved in and he's still ticking along, but I mainly use it for garage work and such. Used the air compressor on him the other day, blew out the motor, the canister and filters and he's back to normal, so overall quite happy with that.

I've heard a lot of good things about Miele's though.

        • Oh nice thanks for the awesome reply. Yeah I hear a lot about the Miele's but am always looking for alternatives especially of they perform better or are reliable.

Good idea on the air compressor lol it definitely helps in clearing out the garbage and dusts and stuff lol.

Will now have to maybe considering looking for one when I buy my next vacuum cleaner lol.

        • @AlienC: no worries :) Glad I could help.
