Can I Use Two Wi-Fi Extenders at The Same Time?

Hi all,

I have an NBN setup at my place. Relatively large sized house so wifi coverage can be dodgy.

I use a Netgear WiFi range extender upstairs at the moment (Plugs into wall). Recently purchased the Xioami WiFi extender for $5 from a previous deal.

Can I use the Xiaomi to increase WiFi coverage in the backyard maybe?

Is it possible to use both?

Thanks

yes, but try to extend only the main WiFi Access Point, extending and extender is not a good idea.

  • Could have saved yourself the trouble and just googled that, you would have got the same response that danielagain just gave.

  • Extending wirelessly halves the throughput, extending by Ethernet cable is best if available as an option.

  • So TL;DR one extender equals half throughput, two extenders equals quarter throughput?

    • Never tried with two of them but I am inclined to think the center one ( first extender ) will severely degrade.

I'd use EoP devices, there are some with an AP in them - Ethernet cable ( EoP as an example ) is always going to outperform Wireless IMO.

      • True that but does EoP work on power boards or only direct outlets (i always forget this info).

Because for some places like my current house there is a limited number of power outlets with most using a power board of some sort or multi adapter.

        • I know they work best on the same power circuit, and yes with powerboards as well ( I personally use them like that ).

        • @LydiaG: hmm ok now how to find out if stuff is on the same power circuit.. I am assuming some circuits don't cross floors or levels so that would be a bummer in my situation.

        • @AlienC:

If you have 3 phased wiring on the premises, EoPs will work within the same phase. If you bbeg, borrow or steal a pair of EoPs, test them out, with or without powerboards.

I use Belkin Powerline HDs, a bit dated but it does the job.

        • @LydiaG: can these also be used for wireless devices aka do they transmit an access point or do you have to connect the EoP to another router at the other end?

Would be nice if it was the former as it means less power usage and also less wires both Ethernet and power cable for the router..

I will definitely be using the cable option in the future when I set-up a tv, pc and console etc but in the meantime I am just using a wireless tablet for all my use case scenarios.. Might even get a laptop first if things seem to swing that way and would prefer using wireless as I have had bad experiences with cables in laptops.
