Desktop under $500

Hi, I am looking for a desktop under $500 and found this: http://www.dell.com/au/business/p/vostro-326x-series-small-d…

Is this a good price? Any other suggestions?

I only need it for web browsing and word processing and I would like a brand new one.

Thanks in advance.

With your budget you'd get a LOT more bang for your buck buying used, so in answer to your question of if this is a good price, the answer is no. If you absolutely insist on buying brand new you're going to be overpaying irrespective, and if you're only browsing the web specs are largely redundant for a desktop.

Just grab a Dell Optiplex 9010 with 8GB of RAM from eBay. Most of them run quad core Core i5 Ivy Bridges, which are more than enough for everyday tasks (and also gaming, but you'll need to throw in a graphics card). Use the code P5OZZIE to take 5% off any items over $30.

If you still want a brand new unit you can try this completely unremarkable Lenovo SFF i3-6100 4G 500G desktop with Core i3 + 4GB RAM for $469 (which isn't a bad price) but not terribly good value when stack against a refurbished Optiplex 9010.

whack in a SSD (even just for the OS. use a HDD for storage)

    • This one has an i7 ivy bridge, 8GB RAM and 500GB HDD for $330.60, total bargain. OP would be crazy to buy that pre-built when you can get this.

Put a 240GB/480GB Samsung Evo SSD in it and use the HDD for storing your documents/photos and you've got a really fast PC.

      • Hey guys,

Just wondering if you think I could pop a GTX 1050ti into one of the mentioned Optiplex without any problems.

It doesn't work in my hp as they didn't update bios to boot into uefi apparently. So looking for a basic PC to handle it, and I'll further upgrade as time goes on.

        Cheers

        • You could always re-install Windows in non-efi MBR/CSM mode and that way the BIOS won't be responsible for the video drivers.

        • @Agret: thanks for the tip, I'll look into that now

        • @KeyHolder: I've gotten overloaded with trying to learn about it all and the information about how to install in non efi is limited, they all focus on the other way round.

Is it a selection when I install a new windows os or would it auto non efi install if I used Windows 7. Thanks heaps for any help you can provide, Google has just overloaded my head with heaps, but no concrete details.

P.S Could I make a new partition on my HD which I have win 10 installed and install the new non efi os there?

Intel Pentium, 4GB RAM, 1TB Mechanical Drive and an absolutely terrible collection of IO Ports built on a 180W PSU. I really feel like you are getting ripped off with that even at $500~

Definitely take the advice of the above comment and grab an Optiplex. Great unit looking to get one for my old man at the moment!
