How do claybars compare to Meguirs Scratch X?
clay and polish are 2 very different things… so you can't really compare them
they serve different purposes
claybars remove things from your paint.
scratch x fills the swirls and imperfections in your paint.
Clay bar removes "stuff" over spray, tree sap, tar, off the paint work and leaves it smooth and like glass. Scratch x will remove scratches in the paint
I love running my fingers over a freshly clayed duco. Sounds strange but don't knock it till you've tried it.
I get 3M bars from China shipped for a few dollars. Probably fake but work fine. Or just use plasticine. Regardless you need to ensure you fold regularly and keep wet - just use car wash - works well and keeps things slippery.

I just need the clay bar. I have the proper expensive spray from the kit, but as you said car wash or soapy detergent works just as well well.

I used a clay bar to get off paint splatter. Very surprised how well it brought up my duco. Will clay again.
