Headphones cost more than the console :-)

    • Unfortunately a lot of them do. People justify spending $350 on a set of Bose headphones but will only pay $300 on a phone.

      • coz ppl change phones every year, but headphones could last for years.

    • Headphones are worth what people are prepared to pay for it.

      • But that applies to everything

  • Thing that bugs me about the XboxOne headsets is that they don't have surround sound. Its just 2.0 or nothing. Even if you plug in 7.1 headphones, it just simulates it. (Do they really shover that many speakers in 7.1 headsets?)

    • surround sound

what?? Xbox has settings for surround sound for every single headset now with windows sonic and the Dolby one which I forgot what it is called, look in your audio settings on the xbox.

      • I'm not sure how this works, the headphones are not connected by a format that allows 5.1/7.1 passthrough. It needs a USB connection for that like PS4

Looking online, it doesn't appear that a True 7.1 Headset exists for XboxOne. You can get virtual 7.1 which is just stereo, or nothing.

Look, you've got two ears, right? If you want to hear surround sound from headphones, you need to change the sound so that your ears think that it's coming from a direction other than the tiny speaker next to your ear. You can either have the XBox do that using Dolby Atmos, or you can have a little computer built into the headphones do it instead (in which case you'd need a connection that carries not just the sound, but the 5.1 or 7.1 location information, like an optical connection). Personally, I'd get the XBox to do it, as it'll map the sound to its correct location, rather than just the nearest imaginary speaker - that way you get up/down information as well.

        • @jong: What you are saying makes no sense.

There are two types of headphones: Virtual surround (most of them) which has two speakers and simulates directional sound. It doesn't work.

Then you have 'true' surround, where the speakers have 5 or 6 little speakers in each ear. These work great, and give true surround sound. The problem is, as far as I can tell, these do not exist for Xbox One. They only work for PC because they require a USB connection.

You can get 7.1 Virtual surround sound xbox headsets, which plug a hub in via Toslink cable, then wirelessly connect to a hub, but no matter what the marketing guys say, you cannot create surround sound from 2 speakers.

        • @Burnertoasty: >which has two speakers and simulates directional sound. It doesn't work.

you cannot create surround sound from 2 speakers.

          This is incorrect.

There are a ton of bad surround sound implementations in various games - but if it's implemented well it works better than 7.1 speaker headphones. Eg. Overwatch which uses Dolby Headphone on PC.

          Don't own an Xbox.

        • @Diji1: Obviously what you are saying makes no sense whatsoever.

        • @Burnertoasty: I'd rather stick my tackle in a beehive then care as much about this as you obviously do.

But cudos for going to such length to educate people.

        • @Burnertoasty:

          (I'm sorry I'm late replying)

Virtual surround works for most people; scientists figured out how to fake it back in the 70s. They use four techniques to fake it - volume, time delay (sound waves will hit one ear slightly sooner than the other), Head-Related Transfer Effects (high-pitched sound waves bend around the head better than low-pitched, so the shape of your head will muffle the sound depending on direction), and by modelling the shape of the ears (which distort sounds cluing you in to direction - try cupping you hands over your ears to get a sense of this). Those "true surround" headsets aren't going to do HRTF or time delay, which is why they sound fake to a lot of us, and why they kind of faded out.

Still, have a listen to this using just standard stereo earphones, no 5.1; and see what you think. To me it's very clear which direction (even up/down) each sound is coming from, although it's a little "sterile" because they aren't modelling reflections from the room. It's like the walls are covered in heavy curtains, or anechoic foam.

  • At this price, you are better off buying one of the legendary audiophile headphone at 60% discount https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/335484
Hurry as there are less than 300 units now.

    • Can you use that on a PS4 or Xbox One. Do those game consoles have a 3.5mm audio port?. And also the cable length is only 1.8m which would be hard to use on a game console in the first place being that short.

      • you need an amp for the HD6xx anyway, just use that amp as the audio port adapter and cable extension.
a cheap $50 amp could do the trick.

        • -2

Yes you would need an amp. If going for that Massdrop HD 6XX then at least a 300 Ohm amp considering the Sennheiser HD650 is a 300 Ohm headphone. And it's just a re-badged HD650.

        • @hollykryten:
i got the HD6XX from last , u do need an amp to make it sound great, but without an amp it still sounds better then most of the cheap headphones, especially compare it to a bluetooth headphone, i also owned a pair of sony mdr 1000x, i would say the HD6XX sound better even with out an amp.

  • You'd need a dac and amp combo that supports xbox or ps. The good thing is that the cable are detachable and lots of third party vendor selling it. Goes from cheap to audiphile grade $xxx. Lots of gamers use this headphone and they swear by it.

    • Yes got to love audiophile grade. I'm currently using a Beyerdynamic DT990 Pro 250 Ohm right now. So cool. Although i am using a 600 Ohm headphone amp on the PC. Good for gaming too.

      • I guess you have room to upgrade to the dt990 600 ohm premium edition LOL you gotta love reference headphones, they are the best for everything and imho they look way more classy than those gaming headsets that looks like a franken-robot mashed up.

  • I got one for these when it was $277…
the surround sound is pretty cool, if your playing in a raining scene, it sounds like your in the middle of a rain storm when actually its a bright sunny day outside.
That said, the buttons suck and you can easily accidentally touch or knock them leaning back.

Would I still buy it second time round? nah..

    • Nah. If spending $300 then spend your money on a decent audiophile headphone like the Massdrop X Sennheiser HD 6XX and a headphone amp.

      • These are console gaming headphones, the one you mentioned won't work with a ps4 or xbox one….
        but yeah, nah regardless

  • Got these headphones on the recent Ebay 20% deal from Mighty ape.

    So good, would recommend.
