How Much Do You Pay for Backpackers Accommodation in Australia?

Catching cheap domestic flights and staying in backpackers accommodation is a way for me to see more of Australia and have a cheap holiday.

Back in 2007 - 2010 I would frequent these budget accommodation providers and pay between $35-40 p/n.
Now it appears you will struggle to find anything under $70 p/n. I really cannot afford to pay more than $50 p/n, otherwise I may just stay at home!

Are my expectations too high?

FYI - dorm rooms cost $20 a night is some hostels.

yes your expectations are too high, your prices are from 7 years ago, and everything is a rip off in Australia.

I hope you don't smoke, as they cost more than $1 a stick.

You honestly should go somewhere cheaper for holiday. Australia is not value for money. Go somewhere where your money goes further.

    • O/S holiday might be cheaper - even factoring in travel insurance costs, flights, money conversion fees, VISA costs, etc.
Maybe I will go on a camping holiday / road trip instead :)

Have you tried airbnb? you should be able to get some cheaper places away from they city for around $50 a night.

What type of hostels are you staying in? I frequently stay in Australian hostels for $35-40pn.

    • I just had a quick look at Trivago ~ lowest price comparison. There was nothing in that price range listed in multiple locations.

      • Single rooms or dorm rooms?

  • I would suggest going with friends and splitting it at airbnb's. That's often what I do.

  • are you looking at shared dorms in hostels? they are 25 a night.

If you want a private room, then honestly what price do you expect. This country is a total rip off. id love to see Australia, but i wont pay $200 a day/night for accomodation etc. too dear.

    • Ah yes. Shared dorm rooms are still cheap. Silly me must must have been using the wrong search filters.

I haven't been to Melbourne yet. They have shared dorm for $21 p/n.

I like travelling solo because I can take my time and travel ultra budget and don't have a whinging girlfriend who will complain about the lack of amenities. All I need is a bed to sleep in. If I want luxury I can stay at home.

I paid $46/pppn for a bed in a 4 bed dorm in Uluru where there is only one hostel (ie no competition). A few months ago I paid $25/pppn for a bed in a 4 bed dorm in Adelaide. And two years ago I paid $30/pppn for a bed in a 3 bed dorm in Melbourne.

If you're willing to share a dorm and bathroom and maybe take the less perfect location (and walk a bit more), you will get low prices.

  • You should buy some of the jetstar hotel vouchers that get posted here from time to time. To answer your question though $25-$40.

    • I just bookmarked www.hostelworld.com
It has all of the prices on there.
Just booked a week in Tassy for $30 p/n :)

      • $30 a night seems about fair. Hopefully that includes Wi-Fi to. For cheap eats I'd recommend the local woolies located at the main cbd mall. The local metro bus is pretty easy to use to, if you've any other questions about the city just let me know.
