Help Me Buy My First Pram

First time mum.

Please help me with in purchasing a new pram. There soooooooo many options i'd rather go by recommendations.

I went into the baby store the other day and walked out within 20 minutes as I had no idea what I was looking at.

Do I need a capsule? Face forward or facing me? Do I get one with both?

Which one do you like? Whats worth the money, what's not worth the money? They are so expensive and this is only the beginning

    Budget…?

What size car do you have?

    • +1

Under $800 and if i'm spending $800 it's gotta be amazing lol

I have a Mitsubishi lancer Sedan

        Look for a second hand.

You will be able to pick up a package for around your price with minimal usage with everything.

Car seat attachments for small all the way through to a good pram with decent resale.

I went for a bugaboo chameleon.

It is a big ish pram but well worth it for not only resale but the quality of design and what you will be using it for.

We plan on having more than one and there is extension for a skateboard and seat for a toddler, and bassinet for when they are too small to sit in the seat. Footmyff for when it is winter.

800 is a lot of money though.

I think you will need to spend 600-700 tops. And don't worry about it being second hand.

Your kid does not know the difference between defecating onto something new or second hand.

Also Huggins are over rated in nappies. Avoid and get the generic. Anything with the word baby and good marketing is a rip off.

Best of luck with it. Welcome to the zombie apocalypse, I'll see you at the zoo on the weekend no doubt.

        • The bugaboo cameleon is the easiest pram to steer one handed. Also it may be good to ask the grandparents to buy the pram for a present if they are in a position to do so. While on maternity leave you will use it every day so it is worth the money to have something that is comfortable to use and looks good.

What ever you get don’t buy the accessories new. Most of the time people buy them and don’t use them so you can buy as new secondhand at least 50% off. A good place to look is bugaboo buy swap sell groups on Facebook as it’s quite common for people to have two bugaboos (more money than sense IMO). If you have two cars it’s also handy to have a different style pram in the less used car. Eg I have the cameleon and my husband has a maclaren umbrella that we also use when we travel to save space and because I’m too worried about airlines damaging my cameleon

So why buy them at all then?

        • @John Kimble: fair point. I think people should be selective about what they think they’ll actually use eg I bought a EUC footmuff yet my son is naturally very warm so it didn’t even get used at the snow or back in Melbourne, a thick blanket was enough. I was able to sell it for what I paid. I’ve seen so many people selling a ridiculous amount of accessories for their prams (bugaboos in particular) with a lot still in packaging.

    Baby jogger City Mini.

It's great. Collapses with one hand, it's rugged and cash take a beating. We initially got it as our second pram but it's now replaced a much more expensive Jane.

I think the City Mini was ~$400.

    • Awesome, thank you. Will add this to my list of prams to look at!

The Mrs bought a Bugaboo Bee3…..it is NOT worth the money. The light weight, the ability to move easily all that is easily matched by other brands half their size.

We used it for 2 kids and still in use. The only saving grace is we can sell it for a decent price (good condition still).

But it is not worth 4 figures.

    • +1

Some of the prams in stores are like the equivalent of Ferrari's for cars. How do they justify a 4 figure amount compared to Baby Jogger at less than half the price?

  • I love my mountain buggy nano. I have weakass arms and so I needed a really light pram for when I am out by myself. It's super easy to use. One of the lightest prams available, can open with with hand.

Oh and you can take it on the plane.

    I've got a 3 month old.
    Buy a Redsbaby Jive.
Compact, lightweight , ability to become a double pram in the future.
Personally I prefer buying a capsule and forgetting the bassinet - easy to keep baby sleeping in the capsule from the car/shops etc.

    • can second this. Ozzy made, very good design and quality.

      • Also bought a Jive

They currently have a promo - get $150 worth of accessories

    • I bought the Redsbaby Metro - have been using it for four months and I love it - it's super easy to steer and fold/unfold, it's lightweight, looks good and feels very sturdy. The only thing I dislike is the sun hood on the seat (it's too small and doesn't shade bub enough) but they've just announced a new model is coming out and it has a much better hood.

Metro has a bigger basket underneath than the Jive, but it can't become a double pram. I also think the Jive folds a little better, but I wanted the bigger basket.

I never used the capsule on the pram - I thought I'd use it all the time but it turns out my son hates the capsule so the less time spent in it the better.

It's not super cheap, but the comparable prams I looked at (Bugaboo Chameleon, ICandy Peach) are much more expensive.

My running pram is a Phil & Ted's Sub4. It's amazing but definitely not an everyday pram.

I find that bigger wheels make it easier to maneuver and are better for uneven terrain.

  • You should do a gofundme

  • +2

Buy a pram that has a capsule that can be disconnected and then clipped into the back seat. It's a life saver as you don't have to wake up the kid when moving.

Got ours from Aldi years and years ago. It was $150 from memory. Plus it converted into a pusher.

Brand was: Kidz Kreations (or something like that)

I'm no expert, but as expecting parents we get a lot of positive feedback from baby jogger. It has a lot flexibility with changing configurations from bassinets, capsules, seats, facing forward/backward etc.. You can easily get the add-ons on gumtree if you're not willing to buy new. As a few people have said, a bassinet isn't needed as kids will just sleep in the capsule when transported from the car to the pram. We have a Mazda3 and the pram pretty easily folds down to fit in the boot.

    http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/BRAND-NEW-STYLISH-VERSATILE-2-IN-…

It is for $199 comes with a bassinet and almost same design as Bugaboo Cameleon worth $1500.

It is compatible with maxi cosi mico AP car capsule (you can buy adapter for $20).

Please check out videos at http://babystepz.com.au/kaka-kaki-baby-pram.html

I am using it for my little one since last 10 months, It is pretty sturdy & no complains at all.

  • +1

    father of 3 kids here

phil and teds. if you're thinking of having second then the under seat is great.
    folds down relatively compact.
get it second hand. ebay ~$100 (that's what I sold ours for 3 months ago).

whilst bub is little then also get a baby bjorn.

    • +1 for Phil & Teds , they're light but sturdy.

    • I'm also looking for our first pram. I really like the look of the Phil & Teds especially with the second seat for down the track.
I've been looking at the Sport and the Vibe on Gumtree. After reading a lot of reviews, it looks like a lot of people don't like the tube tyres because they burst frequently and are expensive to replace. What is your experience with the tyres?

      • +1

        tyres were perfectly fine.

had one for ~4 years and never had an issue.

  • +3

It depends on what you are using it for mainly.

Compact, manoeuvrable and small wheels for one that will mainly be used for shopping centres and on buses etc.
Bigger wheels for one that is mainly used for footpaths, negotiating difficult terrains etc.

I actually ended up with a jogger pram (Mountain Buggy Swift) and strollers (Peg Perego Aria and later a Si) to suit the different things I needed them for. Was very happy with them, but that was a few years ago - I've no idea what's being sold now.

    Apart from the style choice, there are quite a few features to look for;

Able to push it easily with one hand.
Light and able to easily fit in your boot.
Relatively simple to put up and down (bonus if it can be done one-handed).
    Decent hood for shade.
Decent sized basket underneath (must be able to fit a nappy bag and bag of groceries at least).
Does it lay back flat? What accessories does it have?
How long will it last them size-wise? In my mums group one mum paid $1600 for some fancy pram that her boy grew out of by about 18mths.
You may also want to consider your longer term plans and go for one that has the ability to have a toddler seat/board attachment if you can see yourself having another child whilst you have a toddler.

  • Bumbleride or BABYZEN YOYO+ stroller for light weight.

I'm in the same boat as you with a little one coming next year.

If you have a bucketload of flybuys sitting around, they have 2 prams available with points.

Mountain Buggy nano travel stroller - Black
    72,300 pts

    https://www.flybuys.com.au/rewards#/home-garden/toys-kids-ba…

    phil&teds smart buggy 2016 SM-V3-7 Graphite
    69,800 pts

    https://www.flybuys.com.au/rewards#/home-garden/toys-kids-ba…

We went with the phil &teds. 69,800pts is worth $349 if you were to cash the points in for gift cards. I've seen this model selling on a number of sites for $499 so while I would normally never use points for merchandise as it is usually overpriced, but this one seemed to be pretty good value.

We did look at the mountain buggy but didn't go for it for a few reasons.

It didn't seem good value for points — the points cost (72,300 = $361.50) and it retails for $319 (https://www.babybunting.com.au/catalogsearch/result/?q=mount…).

Also it is not suitable for newborn's only 6mo + unless you get addons.

Plus we want to get a capsule so we can transfer bub from the car to the pram and back without disruption, the phil and teds you can clip in (with the $80 adaptor). The mountain buggy can do a capsule but you have to do all sort of strapping it in with belts — not a simple click in click out.

Does anyone know of any deals on a capsule that has isofix that will work with the phil and teds?

So far the cheapest i've found was the Phil & Teds Alpha & Mountain Buggy Protect for around $297 (both look the same to me and I understand P&T bought out MB a few years back). Any better deals out there?

    • I got the newborn add on for the nano and it was only $99. Was pretty easy to use.. we actually carried the baby out of the hospital in it

Why don't you go to local baby bunting / babies r us and play with few of them.
That way you know how its operate and how easy to folder up or lift etc.
You don't need to buy from them.

Don't go for bassinet, that just a waste of $. only needed for first few weeks

My choices were; steelcraft strider compact or redsbaby jive, end up with redsbaby jive (same price point)
It will fill up the boot of your Mitsubishi lancer Sedan.

  • Don't go for bassinet, that just a waste of $. only needed for first few weeks

    Best advice

"Under $800 and if i'm spending $800 it's gotta be amazing lol"

    WHAT?

    second hand all the way.

we have three children - 3 years 6 weeks spread.

We had a front & back 'limo' that would fit in the boot of our CC Lancer. $100 second hand and it lasted years including being partially run over by car. we would put all 3 in it and load it up with shopping bags etc.

    • $800 is nothing, try icandy, that's if your kid is NOT icandy :)

From experience, I recommend the Peg Perego Book pram.

    Image: https://www.bilder.kids-comfort.info/Shop1000px/peg-perego-b…

They are more than $1k new so are close to being a premium unit, but go for a used one in good condition which is a quarter of the price. Try and get the optional car seat capsule which comes with a base for the car seat also so you can easily put the baby in and out of the car when sleeping. A lot less stress!

My example was used and has been treated roughly by me over the past few years and is still in perfect working order. Very light also. The detachable seat and capsule means you can turn it around back or front.

Once you buy a pram new it loses half its value when you start using it as they quickly get bumped around, scratched, puked on, etc.

    • +1

Agree with the price drop, that's why you either buy second hand or buy it for a really good sale price.

  • Tried a few prams in the shops and scoured the net for reviews before we settled on the Cybex Priam. We are pretty happy with it, but it is pretty exy (it was a gift so we didn't pay).

No extended exposure to any other prams though, so can't really compare.

Only issue is it has a relatively small basket and cannot convert to two, but you can install a kickstand thingy apparently.

Have heard uppa baby are good…But probably also exy?

  • +1

    Do I need a capsule?

Most likely no. Unless you really want to move it back and forth between the car and the pram. Expensive and useful only for a few months

Face forward or facing me? Do I get one with both?

You sound like a first time parent. A pram that can face both ways would be better. During early days, you can turn it towards you and you would be much more comfortable seeing the bub’s face than checking to see whether he/she is okay every ten minutes

Which one do you like? Whats worth the money, what's not worth the money? They are so expensive and this is only the beginning

I personally think Red’s Baby is worth the money. We use an UppaBaby Alta and are really happy with it. There are many cheaper and possibly good options available as well. Some suggestions that might help you choose:

    1. You need plenty of storage space to keep nappy bag and everything else
    2. Getting a pram that can fold without removing the seat would be a lot easier to use
    3. Make sure that it fits your car’s trunk
  • +1

Three wheel Jeep 'Liberty' stroller, if you can find one. Light, solid, easy to fold, removable plastic steering wheel all the kids adored, lots of room for shopping and other stuff. We also had the big, stupid expensive top of the line thing - used the Jeep most of the time.

  • +1

Just one thing that a friend mentioned was super important to them and they hadn't considered it, but make sure the pram you are looking at fits through the checkout at your supermarket of choice

  • you don't need to spend $800. Spend $300 max. any fool telling you otherwise is some mug who paid over the top and is trying to make themselves feel better
