Car Insurance in The Name of Owner?

Hi Ozbargainers, we have 2 cars in the family both registered in the hubby's name. My question is does the insurance needs to be in his name or the primary drivers? With his current history, it may be cheaper to have the insurance in my name ('may' only, as I think being younger and a female might not be as cheap as I think).

And, how do insurance companies even prove who the primary driver of a car is?

Thanks for your help.

Ask your insurer. It can vary between insurers and policies.

it may be cheaper to have the insurance in my name… how do insurance companies even prove who the primary driver of a car is?

If you have to ask how to commit insurance fraud on OzBargain, you probably aren't cut out for insurance fraud.

    • I agree, really not cut out for this.

If you have to ask how to commit insurance fraud on OzBargain,

you're assuming that this is an offence under the crimes act 1958.

op, in nsw the registered operator doesn't have to be the owner of the vehicle. you should check with your state's motor department/agency to see if this is the case.

      • Thanks wooah1979. I actually never understood how it worked. Will check with insurer.

We drive both cars nearly equally, and while he's the registered owner, I will always be listed as driver as well.

If you list both as drivers, my experience is that it probably won't make any difference to the premium whichever of you is the policy holder.

Depends on the insurance provider, but usually it doesn't have to be the car owner. If I remember correctly, RACV was the one that needed the car owner as the policy holder. We're with Coles & Aami, and both of them don't require that. Best to check with your insurance company.

I've been driving a car that I do not own for the last 12 years or so, and I've always insured it under my name, with different insurers depending on who gives me the best deal. Had a couple of not-at-fault claims over that time which gone through without a hitch.

I'd wager it's not a problem, but of course check with the insurance provider.

As for cheaper in your name but someone else driving it, expect a higher excess if the other driver is the one involved (in some cases A LOT higher).
