This or pay about $50 more for a second hand 1060 6GB?

    • +1

Not worth the price bump and for a second hand too.

    • This, even a 1st hand 1060 6GB is not worth it for 50 AUD more. It provides between 5 and 10% extra performance so…. for a second hand one….. NO.

  • Excellent price for those wanting to do a cheap upgrade for a VR system - this is slightly faster than the original gtx970 requirement (which for the rift has been lowered for some games) which was a $550 card at that point.

Next decent upgrade is a 1070 which is over 500.

  • I wonder if this card will overheat in a Alienware x51 R2 Desktop?

    • It shouldn't. GTX 1060 is more power efficient than GTX 670.

    • FWIW I'm currently using a x51 R1 with a 1060 3GB with all stock cooling. Stays at around 42-45C normally and then up to 82C when on high graphics. I read up and it's still fine as long as it stays below 90C

      • above 80 degrees is a cause for concern, for me anyway. That's very toasty.

        • Yeah I dropped it from Max to Very High settings when I'm gaming and it stays near 75C, which was better for me.

      • I use Galax 1060 3Gb in some cheap case with ok airflow.
Max 65-67C even on full load.

        • Yup but I was replying with regards to the alienware x51 case which is smaller than a mini ATX case and there aren't very many options for fans or circulation

        • @Apocsky: my point is: is it worth it? 15 degrees for a cool looking case?

        • +1

@Pest85: Well, people keep their cases for a variety of reasons. It's alright-looking but very portable, which suits me when I'm on 3- to 6-month attachments and want to keep my desktop with me. Can't really do that with regular cases though.

    • Also, I am currently using a Galax one because the ASUS wouldn't fit inside with the little extra bump for the cooling coils

  • I am very suspicious of these 3gb cards. I know the performance increase is only 5-10% Max compared to the 6gb card, but I can't help but feel as though the extra ram will coem in hand even playing games at 1080p.

    • My thoughts exactly above. But someone still downvoted me even though I was merely asking a question.

  • Can anyone advise if there would be any advantage getting this over a single fan 1060 3gb EVGA branded card?

    • Most likely this one will be less noisy and not that hot.

      • Makes sense. Cheers.

    • Depending on cooking in the case you might get thermal throttling. I recently got a 6gb 1060 and opted for a dual fan design for this reason.

      • The case I was looking at is quiet small so think it would be wise to go dual fan also. Cheers.
