Not sure if this has been posted yet as it has been available for a while. Also unsure when the deal ends but seems like a good option for decent antivirus. Have a good day

probably should add to the description/title about the fine prints:
"This is a 1-computer 6-month license, for noncommercial use and only for new users of AVG"
Sorry, new user so still getting used to everything. Thanks for the help though
AVG is trash. Used to be great, now is just a resource hog that occasionally decides to screw your computer.
I recommend staying away.
What AV do you recommend?
staying away? lol
Staying away from computer. Yup, 100% effective against viruses and malwares, but also incredibly dull.
Smart browsing, and using a malware scanner or two once every couple of months.
I recommend Avira to customers who want something free, but that's only because it rated ok on some generic "top free antivirus 2016" website and isn't overly resource hungry.
Avira used to be good now it's a popup nightmare. I just put people on Microsoft Edge (or Firefox if they can handle change) with Microsoft Security Essentials or Defender.
If you want a no fuss set and leave free antivirus go with bitdefender, however it doesn't have as many customisable scans and options as some of the others. Until this year I would have recommended Avira as it provided the best detection rate (although the popups did get a little annoying). Recent tests have shown really promising results from Avast since AVG and avast merged. It provides a good detection rate and options, however the free version also has the popups. Just remember to deselect the desk cleaner, system speedup and other add-on bloatware functions at installation.
^ Bitdefender Free works pretty well, and isn't resource hungry at all.
Some people will say this sounds crazy, but i recommend…. nothing.
Use nothing. The included Windows defender in Win10 (and under other names i think in Win 7 & 8) uses minimal resources and has come a long long way from the rubbish it once was.
Have used that + CC Clenaer once a month + Malware bytes on the odd occasion and thats it.
I use none of the real time monitoring in CC and MBAM, just defender day to day. That, plus smart browsing/non risk taking/backing up critical files gives me all the protection i've ever needed.
If everyone thought like that then not a problem. However there are many who don't have the smarts so they need a decent AV to help them out.
@khrome:
Agree, people still do run into issues, but i've never seen an AV that is genuinely more decent that the Windows one.None of the offer 100% protection regardless of their claims.
@virtual81: virtual81, you have a point. IF you are semi conscious of what you click on then something like defender will do the job just fine. In fact if you stay from any kind of dodgy dealings it is almost impossible to catch malware even with nothing installed. However you are absolutely kidding yourself if you are saying Defender will protect as well as commercial offerings:
https://www.av-test.org/en/antivirus/home-windows/
Independent organization that has been testing AV suites for 15 years now.
Saying you have never seen an AV genuinely more decent than the Windows one leads me to believe you've never had a large test bed of AV products to experience, with both commercial and non commercial products.
As a technician of 20 years now, still cleaning malware off PCs on a weekly (won't say daily but absolutely at least one or more per week), I can say without hesitation that is is absolutely my experience that the reviews at AV-Test are real. There are certainly far more computers coming through our doors with malware on them that have Defender/Avira/AVG/Avast or any of the free lower rated AV suites than the big 4 of Bitdefender, Trend Micro, Norton, or Kaspersky.
I could absolutely run without and it sounds you can too, but the fact is most people are still very naive, or have kids who think they know everything and they will repeatedly get malware. I've had machines from the same customers in here multiple times. Majority of these infected machines running AVG. Because it's free.
Some people absolutely need more than Defender/AVG of any of the other free offerings and need to put themselves LESS at risk by putting on a commercial AV suite. We supply NIS here for $25 1PC/1 License. In my mind just over $2 per month to keep these people out of our doors is well worth if for THEIR benefit.
The customers who choose to stick with AVG/Defender, whatever and/or do not change their ways in relation to internet usage - no problem, I'll see them in a week or month's time to go through it all again. We charge $80p/h + GST so no skin off our nose.
But please, yes, your are right none offer 100% protection in my experience, but there is indeed a very large gap from Defender/AVG etc to what I call a PROPER AV suite.
Nothing against you personally I just find it a little irresponsible to recommend using nothing at all. My experience shows that as a big mistake for a lot of people who are perhaps not as vigilant as yourself.
@Ramrunner:
With all due respect i still disagree.
Usability is a significant part of the equation for my customers.
Other AV solutions introduce cost, the need to be managed, often frequent unnecessary popups (yipee, we protected you from unspecified threats, often significant impacts on machine performance etc.
So protection aside the workability of a solution needs to be taken into account.
I looked at the link you provided, and in the case of Win10 the MS solution might not be #1, but it far from reads as a bad choice.
I could make money installing an alternative, but in the last year or so this has been working great for my customers and they appreciate the honesty.
I do make them aware of tests like the one you linked to and provide all the data, including informing them that there are alternatives that offer higher slightly more protection.
If i went into doing this with false claims, no research or to keep the customer in the dark then i'd accept the unprofessional wrap, but i don't think that is entirely fair.
Let's call it a professional difference of opinion.
Once everything is taken into consideration as a whole 9/10 go with the MS solution.
Of the repeat business in the last 18 months i've not once returned to face a malware issue, not assuming this will never happen, but fingers crossed.
Ultimately repeat business, referrals and favourable feedback shows i must be doing something right, that said tho, any of us with honest intentions will get that kind of feedback, i expect you would too.
I think both of our opinions are valid in their separate ways.
I recommend Bitdefender to my customers - the large majority of feedback I receive is very favourable.
Now that bitdefender has a free version it sounds like an interesting prospect. Didn't know this…thanks!
Every month the new AV test results come out it's always Bitdefender, Kaspersky, Trend Micro, or Symantec taking the top crown for the month.
They used to be paid but now that Bitdefender and Kaspersky have free versions OzBargainer's choice is obvious no?

https://free.kaspersky.com/Go for your life. I'd choose either of the above before AVG/Avira any day of the week and twice on Sundays.
Bitdefender, and they have a 90 day free full version trial available too that can be used on 5 devices including PC, Mac and tablets/mobiles.
