Nearly bought the Chuwi Hi10 from Gearbest for about A$190 (US$150) today but realised that I probably wouldn't use it much.

  • I have one of these.

32GB is not enough for a dual boot. 16GB will go to Android. That leaves 16GB for Windows which is not enough. You can't even update to Anniversary or Creators updates.

2GB RAM is also not enough for Windows. It's fine for Android though.

    • Can you somehow get rid off (limit) the android part and assign most of the space to win? Some websites just dont work the same on android as do on win (yes ozb included) so I prefer the windows :-)

      • You can. Some people have done it, though I haven't tried it myself. Half of the appeal of a dual boot is well.. the other OS.

It runs fine in Android. So you'd be getting rid of the OS it was designed to run well with.

Are you running your websites in Desktop view when using Android?

I should stress also that the 16GB is not the last of your problems in Windows. You are getting a full desktop OS, but your CPU is a mobile CPU. It's not very powerful and will lag a lot. Also drains battery fast in Windows. And 2GB of RAM is not a lot. Even 4GB with my Surface I experience a lot of lag if I have too many tabs open. Firefox chews a lot of RAM. I really regret not springing for an 8GB Surface. In spite of that, I have a much faster processor in my SP4 than the Atom, and double the RAM. I'm still not happy with performance.

With this Chuwi, I find I need a powerbank attached while using it or it will drain too quickly. Windows is honestly not useable. And I don't need an Android tab.

        • Thanks mate for that.. great explanation.. yes I do use desktop format, it helps sometimes but sometimes not.. last one I struggled w was agoda. I also had surface 4 (non pro) but given it away recently. I also had the same issue when I opened more than 3-4 windows but I think it was the atom cpu rather than ram. :-) was thinking about this cheap tablet for some travel (small&light to carry) when simply I can not do some booking or so via my andoid phone… $100 for this is not that much in spite of all the shortcomings but might try to fing 64gb device… thanks again, cheers :-)

        • Does it also drain quickly under android?

@yow: No. Seems to last as long as any phone. But typically screen on time for Windows is higher than for Android phones. But it doesn't lag at least.

        • @lostn: Thanks, seems like a great deal! Even the GPU is 96 GFLOPS, about enough for 1920x1200.

What's the clarity of the screen like? I imagine at this price, it can't be particularly good…

        • +1

@yow: The screen is actually quite sharp. No real complaints.

But some apps don't scale well in Windows and the icons will look too tiny, or column widths not wide enough and you have to manually adjust it.

Something I should add is, the headphone jack is poor. You will need an amp or DAC if you want to use headphones with it. It sounds all wrong, even with in ear modules.

        • @lostn: Thanks very much!

I'd use it purely for Android. It seems incredibly subsidized (e.g. 14nm) by intel and microsoft to try to make inroads into phones/tablets.

        • +1

@yow: That was Intel's plan in getting into the mobile market, but they lost billions and gave up. Atom development was discontinued a few years ago, which is why the 8350 is still the latest they have despite being long outdated.

Not that I take a loot of photos, but why do so many of these tablets have such shitty cameras?

Whilst I don't take a lot of photos, I do use my tablet for scanning barcodes into the woollies app, and 5mp is barely adequate.

Budget price, budget specs. If you want a good camera, you're going to have to pay up.

    • +4

If tablets have good cameras, f-wits take them to concerts and take photos which is disgusting. Taking photos with tablets, just don't.

      • +1

So instead they'll use their phones. Or real cameras.

        • +2

Which is fine by me, it doesn't block my view when I'm standing behind them in the crowd.

          @korda:

Was at a wedding recently and an older woman was holding one up in third row taking some awful shots on the crappy camera, pinch to digital zoom and everything, through the entire ceremony. Gay people won’t ruin marriage, photo taking with tablets will. I think it’s an education problem. The pro photographer who was getting shots from the back eventually shut her down.

@sillyhead: this sh*ts me to no end. Why people… Why?

Hell post and shoot cameras got way better spec than these tablets. Not to mention how awkward it is to hold a tablet to take photos.

    • Chinese don't care about photos for some reason

  • I really like the look of this and was very tempted until a closer read showed no USB 3 port.
Reviews have shown that the usb-c port doesn't have USB 3 speeds, and dongles that add extra ports only run at usb2… plus the device won't charge while connected!
Aside from the practicality of having extra components to carry around, I'm sick of needing dongles/hubs as an extra purchase on top of the cheap devices. Add the cost of a dongle and a cover/case and the total creeps up steadily! By the time I get it to work with the ability to charge and simultaneously use USB storage, the price will be close to alternative options that don't need the extra bits…

    • I know what you mean. But I've bouhght enough USB C devices that I can just reuse the cables and dongles from those.

At least it's not like Apple where a $1800 phone doesn't come with cable or charger for fast charging and you have to buy those separately, at Apple's exhorbitant prices.

  • So I decided to get this anyway, damn you OzBargain.

But then I was unable to use the coupon.
An error message comes up saying "this coupon cannot be used for wholesale orders".

Any tips? I tried clearing my cart, only adding the tablet, starting from scratch… I'm pretty sure I did not try to order anything wholesale!
