  • if you are thinking of buying expensive watches like Omega or rolex, buy it only from Reputed seller. There are plenty of fakes out there which are hard to distinguish from the original. Get a nice looking Automatic dress watch with exhibition back. Dont spend 1200 on a quartz.

    I recommend Christopher Ward.

    https://www.christopherward.co.uk/

    Don't spend $1000 on a Quartz watch.

Some of those high-end automatics really are quite stunning.
Regrettably my property and share portfolio doesn't quite lend itself to that kind of expenditure…

You could sell your blue Ferrari. Not the dark blue, perhaps the sky blue.

Looking at the original linked Tissot watch (which looks about AU$827 on ebay delivered for stainless steel band, which would likely escape GST on import), I think that's quite a lot of watch for the money. I'd strongly echo the suggestion to get the steel band, as it's easy enough to swap in a leather one later if you prefer the look, but not so easy the other way around. I can see why it would tick a lot of boxes (assuming it's also the look of it you like), it's a Swiss ETA chrono (albeit a caliber C01.211 rather than a 7750). A new Swiss ETA chrono for 800 that looks nice, seems not bad to me. No doubt there are pre-owned ones on sales as well, obviously be careful to avoid the similar looking quartz model.

(NB with the money you save, between your budget and that price, then get a second Seiko!! :D )

  • I have a tissot a citizen and seiko and I love them all. However for the price of a quartz battery tissot you can get an eco drive or solar seiko

    Here are my watches
Seiko le grand sport around $600-$700

Citizen eco drive (work watch) in blue not green got it for $130 but rrp $400

Tissot t tradition classic got it for $370 but rrp $625

  • Wouldn't normally wear anything other than Rolex, I got a good deal on this one, my best offer of $61,900 was accepted.

However, in this case I vote for citizen

I'm still building up my pocket money reserves for something similar.

At this stage i've only got the dial.

    • Nar I'm still saving up for that $80k high yield investment 😉

  • Seiko automatics are hard to beat on quality of their movements, and quality of their craftsmanship in the <$1000 price range. I have SARB065 'Cocktail Time' which can be had for ~$500.

    Absolute stunner, amazing movement.

  • Skagen watches are a cost-effective yet aesthetically pleasing watch! It's thin which makes it feel like there's nothing there too. There are so many options out there, I'll try dig it up but if you're not a brand whore there's plenty of quality watches available at a fraction of the cost (it is Ozbargain after all)

  • At that price point I'd also go Tissot. May also consider a used Tag.

Check out a new watch brand, can get $10 off on first purchase to reduce price to $110 cheap smart looking watch. Can get interchangeable bands too.

This is a very unusual recommendation, and it's also your very first comment.

These are overpriced basic Chinese quartz fashion watches. You can buy similar on Aliexpress for around $10.00 shipped.
For this kind of money or less you can buy something from an actual watch making brand like Seiko (Orient) Citizen or Casio.

Fair enough then I believe Ali express watches have a smaller face however I could be wrong?
I received one yesterday and am very happy with my purchase.

        • +1

That was very quick indeed. Apparently your website that website was created https://dig.whois.com.au/whois/maverickbanks.com.au 26 September. Frequent popups declaring someone in Glen Osmond just purchased one are so reassuring for hesitant shoppers, aren't they? May I inquire what your watch's dial window is made of? That information is omitted on your the website.

          @PJC:
Very sorry I can't help you with what it's made out of, I'm not an expert when it comes to watches as you can clearly tell. I have the black back with the navy blue band and am quite happy with the watch I've had it for 2 days. Clearly should have done some research, with what the couple of you guys have been saying.

        • +1

@Tucks: So 2 days ago (a public holiday) you received a watch you paid $110 for to a website set up 26 September and you still know nothing about the watch ie whether it features sapphire crystal, but you recommended it as cheap with your very first comment on Australia's foremost bargains website. Have I got that right?

        • +1

          @PJC:

You seem to have that right.
          Where are my socks?

        • @AngryChicken: Socks? Top left drawer?

@PJC: Hang on, got them, just next to my Hans Blix puppet.

        • +1

@AngryChicken: I hope that puppet is now waterproof.

        • +1

@Tucks: They are really popular at Glen Osmond, though. At 1:06am someone else there just purchased one. And 3 more have sold at Windsor. They are probably accomplished sophisticated leaders who deeply appreciate stylish exquisite minimalist timepieces. Obviously the enthusiastic Maverick Banks team of dedicated design professionals would never consider adding their distinguished logo to a $4.99 AliExpress watch …
          https://www.aliexpress.com/item/2016-brand-YAZOLE-watch-Male…

… and at 01:28 another watch sold to an elite sophisticate at Glen Osmond. I already wish I lived there.

    • Which model of those watches do you have? How long have you had it for?

  • What are you actually looking for? Everyday watch, dress watch, fancy casual watch

I'm a bit of a watch fan, so you need to be a tad more specific. For eg I have a Hugo Boss (say $200 off Catch of the Day) for an everyday watch, have a Maurice Lacroix for a fancy dress watch (you can get them for $600 off ebay), and a Kenneth Cole with a nato strap for a snazzy casual (maybe $300)

Hell, i use my Miband 2 for the real everyday stuff, aka going to the office

    • Thanks, that's an interesting article. Now I'm drooling about watches by Perrelet and Pierre Kunz.

I wouldn't buy a Tissot Touch or Pro version.

Had two of them, and when the battery ran out i got quoted $500 each time to replace it. (from Mazz - the Swatch group charges ~$200 but you got to send it to them).

I eventually got it replace at a local watch maker for $50.

Also the watch maker mentioned that there was rust on the inside, given that the watch is water proof to 100M and i don’t do any diving in it it seems me that there is an inherited fault with the watch.

When i contacted the swatch group they said that the watch needs to be inspected every 12mts and the seals replace every 6-12mtys for a cool price of $180.

    • What battery does it take?

      • +1

its not the battery per se but the fact that the whole internals of the watch are a single unit. Parts cant be replaced.

  • I bought a citizen eco drive a couple of months ago, it got condensed water in it and due to that, one of the side buttons came off and got lost. I didn't do scuba diving and hundred percent sure the crown wasnt on. It happened in a shower. I will ask for a replacement soon.

From the two comments above I am thankful that I purcased a Casio metal band watch with analogue and digital read out in 1980 for $20!! It is still in perfect working order today, still looks good and I get several years out of bargain shop batteries that sell for $1 for a card of 10 ..LOL.
Anyway I have finally retired it as my Seiko SNDC09P1 arrived today from Creation Watches Singapore.
Contrary to some reports it did come in a Seiko box with an instruction and a warranty booklet and seller certified Seiko warranty card. All in all i'm very impressed for the $. Hope it serves me as well as my old Casio did?

BTW… Creation Watches have a hot special on a Casio all s/steel watch on clearance at the moment, $30 less 10% with code CLEAR = $27 incl standard delivery. Feel free to post it as a bargain if you think it is worthy?

I just got one of these. Really nice watch for the price. They are discontinued now but can still find it on Amazon.

    • That's a bit much for a Japanese movement.

  • Just be prepared to add GST when you buy from jomashop or other overseas retailer.

im surprised smart watches havent killed normally watches off.

    • +2

Smart watches appeal to a totally different market.

    • i think its because they dont have the look and class of proper watches. People think smart watches are a tool like a phone and just buy a new one every year or so when it is outdated. Watches are more style/fashion/jewellery. Thats my opinion.

      • -1

Yea, I think now days if u wear a watch u are not wearing to tell the time, that's for sure.

It's all about fashion and what it says about oneself. But apparently technology is the fashion of today.

    • +1

Quartz watches should have already killed mechanical watches. There is almost no practical use that mechanical watches offer over quartz watches.

Yet, mechanical watches are still sought after and cost more than quartz counterparts. So the demand for mechanical watches is due to stylistic reasons rather than functional. Smartwatches add even more utility, though you need to recharge them regularly, they won't completely replace mechanical watches due to the same reasons why quartz didn't kill them.

      • true. a $100 quartz rep would be a heap more reliable and accurate than a many thousand auto watch that you need to service (and pay a heafty price for) - but people seem to like them, thats why a lot not have glass backs so you can see the rotor spinning when you move it - looks cool I guess.

        • +1

…have glass backs so you can see the rotor spinning when you move it - looks cool I guess.

          No guesswork involved.
          It's super duper cool.

Happen to be wearing my automatic as i type, and i'm feeling very special.
That's what it can do for you…

  • I don't know what they're like nowadays, but with three Tag Heuer's that are all 10+ years old and all look and work like new, I'd recommend them.

  • OP, considering your stated preferences, consider this Raymond Weil …

    https://www.amazon.com/Raymond-Weil-Freelancer-Automatic-Sta…
    US$824.99 + US$157.96 = US$982.95 = ~AU$1250.25

    Panerai or Audemars Piguet FTW

    • +1

okay, link to $1200 Panerai or Audemars Piguet please

      • Oh dear if your on a budget I recommend you look at Glycine. Swiss producer of fine automatic watches.

You could buy two of them for just over $1200 and it would be a far better product and calue for money than the Tissot, Seiko and or Citizen.

OR save your cash and buy a real watch that you fall in love with. $5,000 the perfect entry point for a luxurious automatic watch

        • Glycine are definitely worth considering, and Jomashop seem to be charging more on eBay for their automatic chronographs.

  • Seiko purely because of sentimental reasons (it was my first purchase that I "haggled" on).
    Just depends what the occasion is - I'm considering the Tissot ones below;

    https://www.anguscoote.com.au/watches/mens/tissot-visodate-t…
    https://www.anguscoote.com.au/watches/mens/tissot-tradition-…
    https://www.anguscoote.com.au/watches/mens/tissot-chemin-des…

It'll mainly be a formal occasion/dinner date type of watch.

  • Boss bought me a Dietrich OT-5. Really nice. A little over your budget but looks like a $10k watch. Comfort level 100

I daily a blue Orient Ray. Sub $300 and I love it because it pays homage to a submariner.

It's from a reliable brand with an in house automatic movement, bright luminance, 200M waterproofing and a pretty thin, non bulky profile.

    • But…Blancpain had the first sports divers watch, the submariner came after.

    • +1

Same - I'm rocking an Orient Ray II in blue most days of the week.

  • +1

I would get a Oris Big Crown

    An antique rolex

  • Search eBay (able to make best offer and it's way cheaper), consult the watches sub-reddit. You can find some gems out there for a fraction of retail. I went to Angus and they had a Roamer watch for sale that I saw on eBay for a fraction of the price (1/4th of retail).

  • Junghans Max Bill. Great value for money. Doesn't look cheap, recognized by watch enthusiasts, a timeless classic!
