  • Spark has had a bunch of deals last few weeks. I think DJI realised it was just too expensive for what it is…

    • Nothing recently has been much better than the early deals so I don’t think that’s fair to say. In fact I’m surprised prices now aren’t lower now retailers have started to drop “early adopters tax"

  • Not a bad price for all those that bought a cheap Spark recently…

Says it's capable of doing up to 2 km, I would like to point out that while that may be true in other countries, in Australia the radio output is artificially restricted, so you won't get anywhere near that range, you're looking at around 500m instead. I'm saying this based on personal experience, as I bought a Spark fly more combo soon after it was released thinking I could fly it the advertised distance, not realising it adjusts radio output limits based on where it determines it is.

I'd like to add that you can't legally fly if 500m away from yourself either, as it would be impossible to maintain direct line of site, which is required by law when flying drones. Due to the size, it's difficult to see at a distance. It does have lights though, so it'd be a lot easier to see at night.
That comes to my next point. Night flying is illegal.

Pretty much, don't buy this hoping to extend your range by very much. If you fly out of line of site, you're breaking the law, and there's also output restrictions on the radio. There used to be hardware differences, or a switch you could flip to change between radio output restrictions, but now they check your location through a variety of methods, including an online check, a GPS check, and if I recall correctly, a sim card check,a bit of foil won't stop these checks from working, but it will make flying dangerous. At least the controls are really nice, and sport mode is amazing, although it's strange that you can only activate sport mode if you own the controller.

To finish this all off, consider warranty. The controller is quite expensive, and DJI don't provide warranty for devices that are imported, even though there's only international versions of the controllers and drones, I've heard that they check the serial number in their database, and if you're an Australian seeking warranty on a model that they sold to an American retailer, they'll tell you to bugger off.

On the topic of DJI drones, they've violated the GPL license of Busybox.
Also, their artificial restrictions on everything (such as flight modes) suck. Use this to remove the restrictions

    • You can fly legally at 500m because it can be seen if you keep moving and don’t look away. More than a blink or stationary it’s extremely hard to find again at that distance. My disappointment is that even 500m is pretty optimistic for the controller in Australian (same Europe/CE) restricted mode. It is better than the 50m for smartphone control though and as you say, fairly easily bypassed. The controller is an essential upgrade to get the best out the Spark though … that’s for sure

      • You'd want to have the greater FCC mode over CE to combat the interference rather then sending the bird out 2kms. In CE mode it would not handle interference well at all.

  • A must have for anyone who didn't buy the spark fly more combo.

  • Weighing up if I get this with a basic spark or the Binglee 20% Flymore pack for $880 currently on eBay. Extra battery, pro guards etc. Any thoughts anyone? Do you think they will get cheaper?

  • Combined with another deal to get Oz Stock spark + extra battery. Works out cheaper than the HK fly more and has Aus warranty on the drone itself. Not fussed about the prop guards, charge hub or ugly bag…
