  • Thanks OP. Got one

    ROUTA

Is that pronounced router or rooter?

    • +2

      router
but said in the same tone and conviction as THIS IS SPARTA

      • +1

        THIS IS ROOTER.

  • +1

So if I have poor wifi coverage from my adsl router in a room I can just plug this in some power in the room and signal will now be fine?
    Is that what this is?

    • +1

depends what the reason for your signal being poor is.
If the cause is weak signal due to penetration, it will probably improve it.
If the cause is due to interference with other 2.4ghz devices, probably not.

      • Thanks, just poor reception due to distance and walls.
Anyway ordered one and will see how it goes, worth $6 to try.

        • +2

See my comment about optimal placement.

        • +1

we had the xiaomi wifi router 3. caused some issues in repeater mode (devices would just drop off and wouldn't be able to reconnect).

replaced with a tp-link WPA8630P kit. it's a wifi extender, connected to main router via ethernet over power adapters. it works well (for x20 the price, i would hope so…). in case this helps…

        • @scrimshaw:
Thanks. It's for the playroom one person says their laptop is fine the other says not so, they only mentioned this last night. I wasn't going to worry about it until I saw this deal. I'll put it somewhere before that room.
I'm thinking this device will be ok but if not I've only lost a few bucks.

    • +3

You will need to plug it in somewhere between the router and your room. Imagine your trying to cross a creek on stepping stones and there's too big of a gap between two; there's no point getting a new stone and putting it next to one of the other stones - you have to put it somewhere between the two.

      • +1

Yeah, I kinda didn't explain it well.

What I meant was that this isn't a 3 g dongle for a laptop or anything weird like that, it's just a signal booster to have half way to another area of the home.

        • Ah yes, yes it is a signal booster (technically a repeater).

        • @macrocephalic:
In the description it said … Network Communication: 3G Only
And seeing it looks like a dongle, I wasn't sure.

          All good, thanks.

I knew exactly what this item was for… until I read this.

  • Thanks OP. Got one

I hope they have a sale on their home security kit soon.

    • Check the recent deal a week or so ago. A number of the codes are still working.

  • bought another one to gift someone.
even though im not sure if i am using it properly. i put this in the hall away from the router and had it as a different ssid then i realised theres an option saying boost existing signal

  • +1

    don't need it, got it.

    damn these Xiaomi deals.

  • +1

Bugger, didn't see the 2.1% cash back for new customers. Missed out on 13 cents.

  • Cheapest ever?

    • +2

      Cheapest so far

  • +1

was just looking to buy it last nite for $11. lol Bingo. Thanks Tigharse, Hope it alwys stays this tight

  • I bought one during the previous promo. Got it in about ~2 weeks. Pretty painless setup. Regarding the signal, it does seem to increase the signal bars - haven't done any tests though.

  • -1

Pretty useless extender if you turn off your modem as you have to set it up every time.

    • I just tested power cycling my router as I have a capped internet connection. The settings of this device isn't stored in the cloud nor is it managed by your router, it seems to be handled by the device itself.

You might have a dud unit? Also, most people don't turn off their ADSL / NBN routers, it's usually on 24hrs / 365 days

    • I haven't turned off my router in 1 year.

      • +1

Turn off/on mine (ADSL 2) relatively regularly…ISP may be playing silly throttling games?

Anyway an off and on often gets me back my usual speed after it has fallen by 50% or more for no clear reason.

        • Yeah, that happens to my modem as well. Turn off at night so speeds come back in the morning and day.

  • Seems to be broken for me. I put in the code and get a message about it being $5.22 fixed price, but when I go to pay it's still US$8.99. Tried multiple times.

    • Is it a postage / insurance option?
Mine was fine once I logged in.

      • I am logged in. When I apply the code it actually goes from $8.99 to $10.61, then if I go to the next step and select the free postage it goes back down to $8.99.

Hmm, it works from a different browser (Opera vs Chrome). Given that both of those are essentially the same browser, I'm assuming it was some sort of session/cookie that was screwing up.

        • +1

you didnt have operas built in VPN turned on, seeing its for Aus IPs only.

I was on a tablet at the time and had no probs, apart from trying to remember my paypal password.

        • +1

@PVA: I had it on the first time I tried, then I turned it off but the problem kept happening, that's why I suspect it was some sort of session/cookie issue.

  • No idea why I bought one but thanks TA!

  • +1

If one works well, wld two or three work even betterer ?

  • Amplifier
    This repeater

Is it a amplifier or a repeater?

    • +1

      Yes.

    • +1

It's a repeater. That's why the product tag I created mentions "repeater' instead of amplifier, although technically speaking, this repeats signals and extends your range

It does not amplify weak signals, hence my recommendation in comment above: avoid place it in a location where it would only receive partial / weak signals.

  • +1

Can’t wait to see xiaomi release mesh router

  • +1

Sweet, would have picked one up if it worked for 5GHz network.

  • +1

Tempting, but my house is so small.

    • +4

Don't lie, you live in a cardboard box.

      • +1

        Well this is OzBargain

  • Thanks. Got One

  • Didn't have requirement but bought one since most of you'll bought it :)

  • Ordered one without any idea about this device. Thanks OP.

    • You took my line!

  • Doesn't work for me. Code accepted but total payment is not reduced?!? After applying the code, Gearbest says: "FIXED PRICE Coupon: $5.22" below the Apply button, but the of total remains unchanged AU$11.33 (not altered by shipping costs on the next page).
Now I got it to work with Firefox, but not Chrome…..

  • Reminder to pay in AUD, not USD as they use a rate below the current XE spot rate at the moment.

  • Ordered. Got distracted whilst I was on GearBest. Bought other things, oops.

  • Don't need another one but these are great. For the price, they are amazing.

  • still don't get how a repeater works. if the signal is bad, what would it do anyway if it just receives the bad one and rebroadcast it?>

    • +1

You have it in a position before it gets bad.
Eg your router is at the front door but you get no signal at the back of the house, have one of these half way to extend the signal.

  • +1

I got this yesterday from the last deal. It receives the signal from my wifi and creates another wifi signal with the same hotspot name and ads "_plus" at the end of the name. So I log out of my normal wifi and connect to the new network using the same password. The signal appears to be a bit stronger than my Netgear modem. Slight reduction of speed, seems very acceptable for the money. You need to register fo a Mi account to be able to set up the app using your phone. All in all, an easy process.

    • -1

      Slight reduction of speed

      it's by 50%.

      • +2

That would depend on internet speed.
Under 20Mbps won't be much difference.

        • That would depend on internet speed.
Under 20Mbps won't be much difference.

a half duplex repeater with two or more clients with one streaming youtube while the other streaming 1080p may cause enough congestion for the 1080p to drop frames.

      • I bet you wouldn't notice much difference in slow adsl areas.

      • I get a reasonable ADSL2+ speed (around 12 mbps near the router) and only notice a drop of %5 using the repeater at the other end of the house. Without the repeater I practically had no internet in the kitchen.

  • First time user of the site, i keep getting logged out after trying to apply the code! What gives :(

  • Still waiting for the last one

  • Just bought it for $6.54 :)

  • Help. I'm out of excuses to buy something i don't need right now.

  • +2

I got mine yesterday from the previous deal and s struggled for a long time last night trying to get this going but finally got it working.
What I had to do is use the green MiHome app on an Apple phone not the blue app. Set the app location to Mainland (China) and choose the Mi Wi-fi repeater 2. I also had to change my Fritzbox router Wi-Fi WPA Mode from “WPA/WPA2” to “WPA2(CCMP)”
A blue light on the unit shows it has connected, the last screen on the app said the process has failed for me but as it went to a blue light from the flashing yellow, I found it did indeed configure properly.

    • Thanks for this mate. I had trouble setting it up, i had no idea which location to set to as their is no australia region, and the chinese regions were written obviously in chinese so I tried U.S server singapore and it wouldnt connect.

Tried your way and good as gold. I bought this as my bedroom is a good 30m + upstairs through cement walls and got barely half a bar and dropouts. Now I get full bars streaming 1080p60fps youtube cookin with gas. Thanks TA for last deal TA, all I need now is the xiaomi bendy usb light and smart desk lamp.

  • +1

"The Code you entered has expired."

  • received this yesterday. so around 3 weeks delivery, not too bad.
Set it up today and it works a charm. One room (playroom) had poor wifi, PS4 wouldnt pick original signal up, plugged this into a spare usb plugpack we had, in the same room, and all is now fine. Great product so far.

  • Hoping somebody works out another deal with GB. Looks like I need to get another one for my home.
