Do not give them your email! 3 emails a day of spam. Use the direct link or give them a temp email.

I wonder if this comes with anything "extra" in the install. I haven't installed this yet, but will look into it later.
If there is, it might be possible to extract the registration details and re-use in the vanilla version.

    • +2

this link downloaded an .exe file that had a different name to the hard disk sentinal. Beware, this can often mean it is wrapped in a container that has other executables in it.

    • Care to elaborate ?

        • +5

It can't detect mechanical failures that the hard drive doesn't even know about.

What do you think this is, magical wizard software?

Does it listen through your microphone for the wrong frequencies?

        • LOL

        • @samfisher5986: Wouldn't most mechanical issues result in noticable read/write/seek problems tho?

        • -5

@samfisher5986: download it and hope that one day you will start your computer and this software will report some error. Good luck and on the other hamd who knows if you are data is being compromised :)

Read Lenovo's story and why were fined.

Noises rarely means a disk/reading issue.

        • @twoperspectives:

If you could read you would know I already use this software and it has saved me multiple times.

i've installed it and scanned my computer with malwarebytes after that, and found no threat.
    so looks like it's good

  • +3

The direct download link from the previous offer seems to serve the current version.

  • Ia this any good. I am always sceptical of these apps. Doesnt windoes/SMART have a built in utility just for this that shows you a warning message when the PC starts before windows boots up?

    • It will actually boot into windows if it gets that far and tells you to backup your data. The dialog in windows 7 actually looks quite phishy - except the isn't a phone number to call haha. Haven't come across it in 8 or 10.

Windows will only warn you when smart events exceed the threshold set by the manufacturer. So for instance it might trigger a warning after 100+ reallocated sectors. This type of software lets you go and gave a peek - personally if there are any re allocated sectors I retire the srive

  • +4

I use this on my home server, its warned me before two hard drive failures and I was able to get the data off in time.

It has a lot of features and its one of the best pieces of software to do this.

I have mine alert me the second there is a failure, it also tests all of my hard drives every week and can do things like emergency backup etc.

You can also look at the stats yourself and make your own decisions as to if a hard drive might be on its way out as well as give estimates as to how long the drive has left.

Windows does not do this, the only time it will warn you of a hard drive failure is when you the hard drive runs out of reallocated sectors and at this point you've already lost a lot of data.

    • Do you need to set up anything or it does it all by itself ?

Is it in the "Estimated remaining lifetime" section ? I old Toshiba says it has 684 days left ! While others drives have over 1000days

      • +1

        yes estimated remaining lifetime.

And to monitor it does it all by itself, it has extra features.

        • Thanks for that

  • How much of a resource hog is this app? Wouldn't it be better to check your disks every month or so with crystaldiskinfo unless you have a data server setp?

    • Yeah I was about to ask… Does this do anything different to what the free crystal disk info already does? I just check my hard drive status every month or so with that, and pull out any drives it flags as bad.

    • +1

How much of a resource hog is this app?

I'm running this version. HDSentinel.exe [Hard Disk Sentinel Engine] is currently using 3,968KB and 0% CPU.

Wouldn't it be better to check your disks every month or so with crystaldiskinfo unless you have a data server setp?

With the amount of RAM I have, I'm happy to give up 4MB of memory for it to run in the background.
It's especially useful when you have computers you don't always sit in front of, e.g. a server.

      • +1

4 MB of RAM is very low for a Windows program these days. Most TSR type applications gobble up far more, particularly if they use frameworks like Java or .Net.

Other TSR applications I use, and recommend, are Process Lasso, Wallpaper Cycler, 3RVX (volume etc information), YzDock (Apple style), PTFB (button pusher), YzDocK (launcher),WindowBlinds, 7+ Taskbar Tweaker, VistaSwitcher, Macro Express, and Guillotine (launch programs by typing). Most are free, the rest worth purchasing.

    • what exactly is this about crystal disk info? isnt' that the one that tests your memory card and phone speeds to see if it is legitimate? Am curious on how to use this to check hard drive status?

I had hdd sentinel then foolishly did the program update and lost my license (i think i got it free before on a similar free license as this deal - so the update wiped my access).

now i keep getting the 'evaluation' box, which I have no idea if it is running properly. so far no hdd errors or indications, but still curious if it is working right. abit worried about this deal - given it's a third party and what they may 'imbed'.

      • Crystaldiskmark is the one you've used for testing speed.

  • Should I use this 5.01 or my current 4.50 Pro?

    • I'm in a similar position to you (4.60 PRO) and noticed that the current offer is not for the PRO version, just the unregistered version without expiry. I'm not sure what the differences are, but it would be nice to get a newer version :-(

  • +11

Here is a proper direct link without using their downloader tool that tries to install their plugin thing…

  • does anyone use something similar for mac os? keen to have something that runs weekly checks and sends pop-up or email if errors, but would like a one-off checker if not.
have found SMARTReporter and DriveDx but they are paid, and also GSmartControl / smartmontools which is free but very intimidating to figure out how to install/use …
Or is running DiskUtility 'First Aid' every so often a good solution for mac os users?

  • Anything to get this on linux?

  • +1

Every PC should have this. Saved my ass twice. Had a drive that was about to die and I got alerted.

  • Anyone care to comment on the comment above about this being the unregistered, free version? Does this offer any less 'useful' monitoring and notification of hdd that may be at risk of failing? All i want is the ability to monitor and know if the hdd may be about to K.O - so just curious if it is worth getting.

  • Yes it is worth getting especially as it is free. Being using it for last couple of years and shows some good information. I also use it to quickly check misc HDD's that I have around. I Plug them in to USB using a caddy. This software gives me a great overview of their condidtion, age etc. It can create a nice report which I save with the HDD hence a nice way of keeping inventory! It has plenty of features. Just my pennies worth. If ypu don't like it, just uninstall.
    Cheers
