What to Do with a Load of Coles Myer Vouchers?

My son won a bunch of coles myer gift cards, totaling around $500 I think. He has no idea what to spend them on.

He is a bit past the age of buying toys from target, his interests are mainly his sports (of which he has plenty of top end gear) and pc gaming. He has a PS4 but since he built his first PC it hasnt seen much use.

He wasn't able to use the gift cards to buy jb hifi cards, or to buy steam gift cards. Life would be too simple if they let us do that.

Tried to tell him to use them for school gear for next year. sure you can guess what he thought of that idea.

Any ideas what he could do with them that is more suited to a teenager?
Otherwise I'm going to be stuck with buying them off him and using them for groceries, I'd much rather he found a use for them himself.

Be a lowlife and get him to buy his own groceries

Tried that too. Seems fair that he does the shopping for the next few weeks, but his mother didn't like that idea either.

ill take them if they free

  • According to the GC site.

    https://www.coles.com.au/our-range/our-products/gift-cards

Coles Supermarkets, Coles Central, Coles Express, Myer, Target, Kmart, Kmart Tyre & Auto Services, Officeworks, Liquorland, Vintage Cellars and 1st Choice Liquor Superstore.

Officeworks sells computers and phones and tablets. So perhaps he can buy a laptop or a smartphone.

    • He wasn't interested in buying school equipment, and I'm not going to push that agenda as he earned the reward so he should get something he will enjoy, his PC is built, not sure office works has anything else he might enjoy, might be worth a wander through though.

Exactly as you said, however, what he won wasn't $500 cash, it was $500 of gift vouchers, and gift vouchers aren't cash.
Get your child to deal with the situation himself. If he wants $500 to buy "something he will enjoy", then it should be his responsibility to find a way to achieve that.

        He can:
        a) figure out a way to sell those vouchers to someone else.
        b) make a deal with you, then in exchange for the SERVICE of swapping $500 voucher for cash, he could do some chores around the house.

May I suggest the parents buy the gift vouchers off him at a discounted price. That way he gets to keep the cash and can decide when to spend it. The parents can use the gift vouchers for groceries, It's a win-win situation.

Liquorland, Vintage Cellars and 1st Choice Liquor Superstore

  • How old?

He could buy a set of tyres from Kmart tyre &auto. It would be a great start towards a first car. Otherwise just blow it all on booze at Liquor land.

Oops, edited my comment as I didn't read your last sentence. I think it would be good to buy them off him. Who knows, maybe he'll put it into a saving account.

  • Why don't you buy them off him for $750 to use for groceries on the condition he doesn't spend it. Set him off to a path of financial responsibility rather then buying stuff for the sake of it.

Yep, what I was going suggest.

Just buy them off him knowing you will otherwise hand cash over to Coles anyway for normal shopping.
It costs you nothing, and it gives him freedom to use 'his money' as he chooses (or for 'investing', but really its his money so should be his choice).

I have $500 worth the Coles giftcards I'll sell you for $750……..

Set him off to a path of financial responsibility

      O.o

Not sure if you're setting a good example here!

Why would I give you extra money?
Come and clean my gutters and il might slip you a 20.😉
Extra $250 is a reward for not spending. O.o

  • Some enterprising unregistered pharmacists will likely take said coles myers vouchers in exchange for pharmaceutical products.

As a loving parent, you could always swap some cash for a giftcard, assuming you shop at these places. $500 doesn't go that far when buying food! Maybe don't swap them all at once. Say $50 or $100 each week.

Then that way, the lovely angel can buy his steam gift cards or go blow it at jb etc

There has got to be something in the whole of myer that he would buy. What about some clothes or books?

  • Sell/swap on classifieds

Thanks for the ideas guys, starting to look like I'll end up buying them from him. Had a chat this morning, said I'd buy them, but only if he put the cash towards his first car. Not allowed to spend it elsewhere. I might even put the cash in the safe so he can't pull out of the deal and spend it elsewhere.

His going to give me his answer tomorrow.

    • Parenting done right 👌🏻

    • Success on this idea, and since he is at that age, I've offered to put a bit towards the car as well, he's still got some saving to do, but at least he has stopped obsessing over video games and started looking at cars in his price range.

now, any advice on how I can spend this $500 on something more exciting than groceries? :)

      • Prepaid mobile phone plans
        Alcohol
Other gift vouchers (not sure if that is an exclusion)

  • Hi mate, if you want, I could exchange them for Super Cheap Auto Gift Card or JB Hi-Fi Gift Cards. Please pm me if you are keen. Cheers
