Apple are never the first to introduce anything, they have been the first to do a couple of things 'well'. Typically by NOT pushing the bleeding edge and waiting for others to point out the potholes first. Only their marketing says they do things first.

      • People said the same thing about Apple Pay.

    • +12

I never understood the "easy to use" part with iPhones, how is it easier compared to Android for example?

I jumped iPhone band wagon years ago when it was was a novelty, but all the stupid restrictions like proprietary charging cable, no SD card slots, can't connect external HDD etc. made me switch to Android and never looked back.

      • Don't forgot that there is no file browser and you have to use iTunes to interface with the phone from a computer.

        • +1

Got a new work iPhone and tried to move my photos back to it. Literally spent hours before workmate told me it was not possible. Apple is Fisher Price rubbish.

        • @ozbargainer88:

I'd recommend using google photos. The iphone with it's unexpandable memory is problematic to keep existing photos on the device. Gphotos will let you view uploaded photos but they'll be cached and reduced size (until you click on it) to save storage space.

        • +1

@phil1311: I do use Google photos, on my personal Android phone. It works great. This was a work phone for work photos.

        • @ozbargainer88:

Ah I see. I think it still possible to make a gphotos account with a non gmail account, if that works for you. Can look at photos from the computer that way too.

        • @ozbargainer88: because of the work profile your work imposed on a work phone, right?

      • +4

There's your answer. It's easier as you can't configure it or expand it as easily as you can an Android phone. Less potential for some users to modify something and break it.

With an iPhone you use it the way it allows you to use it. With Android you use it the way you want to use it, but you need to work out how to do that (sometimes easy, sometimes not so easy).

        • +3

But if you're simple user and don't care about configuring something, it's almost the same e.g bunch of icons on the screen, you tap one it launches the app etc.

        • +3

@raspudala: Yeah very true. Though for some users simple/intermediate/advanced alike (having worked with older students and teaching them how to use a computer, IT service desk work and doing advanced training), more options/capabilities confuses them or allows them to get "stuck" (they're usually not stuck) or change something accidentally so it doesn't work the way it should. That doesn't make it seem easy for that group of users.

        • @raspudala: The problem is each phone seems to have a different way to accomplish tasks so you can't simply Google "how to turn on personal hotspot Android" for example and have it tell you the exact steps to turn it on (this happened to me and I had to read about five different tutorials all with different steps, none of which matched the options present on my phone). On the other hand, all iPhones work the same, and there is very little change in existing features from iOS version to iOS version so you can always work out how to do stuff. And the GUI is so well designed you can find the feature you want without needing to look it up. A quote I saw once was "A GUI is like a joke, if you have to explain it, it isn't good". I can see why configurability is attractive, but I like being able to pick up a phone and be able to use it right away.

      • +3

iPhone's and apple products are considered 'easy to use' because the entire framework is built on roadblocks stopping you from venturing out and making the phone essentially 'your own'. With android, you have an open world where you can customise your phone to suit your needs or personality….so 2 people can have totally different SGS8's. So in 'easier' we are saying 'basic'

    • I bought my SGS8+ last week from ShopMonk for 799 AUD. I'm quite happy with the dual sim variant and Grey Orchid color.

FaceId isn't innovative? I haven't seen any other company's tech as good as this.

Also their chips are amazingly fast.

      • I haven't seen any other company's tech as good as this.

You've seen FaceID yourself? How do you know it's good?

        • I haven't seen it, but I trust Apple - they have a very good record of being honest about these issues.

People who saw it being used in the post announcement demo said that it was extremely reliable. Reports from Apple employees who have been using it also say it is very reliable.
Apple also worked hard at ensuring it wasn't easily fooled.

        • +2

@SirDale: Well… Apple Maps looked great when it was announced too. ;)

It'll probably work just fine. I'm more interested in how people react to not having the fingerprint sensor any more. Having to look at the phone to unlock it before e.g. paying for something is definitely less convenient than simply touching the fingerprint sensor/home button as you're pulling the phone out.

        • @SirDale: lol…..they literally switched iPhoneX's during the presentation because the first phone didn't recognise his face…

        • @eug:

Yep, it's definitely an interesting point. I'm not sure if people will find it as convenient.

        • @andrgram:

And if you had done any research you would have heard the explanation.
The existing phone had been picked up and cleaned by a number of people in preparation for the presentation, and their faces had caused failed unlock attempts. After a given number of fails it drops back to a PIN.

Apple typically work hard at making sure the tech works well before release, and they generally get it right.

        • @SirDale:

And if you had done any research you would have heard the explanation.

As mentioned before, it'd be surprising if they were that incompetent with their own invention. It was a very high-profile launch for their most premium iPhone ever, at their 10th anniversary event in the theater dedicated to the company's founder.

It's very likely that the very engineers who worked on the phone would be backstage prepping the phones for the first high-stakes demo to the world - they're trying to tell everyone that this new system is superior to the fingerprint reader everyone has been using. Surely they would know what happens if they started switching the phone on and passing it around while looking straight at it. They can't be that dumb.

Apple typically work hard at making sure the tech works well before release, and they generally get it right.

Is it not possible that this is one of the times they didn't get it right?

        • @eug:

The comments were that the people who clean the phones/do the set up work caused the problem. I doubt they were the iPhone engineers.

It's possible that they didn't get it right, but back to the original point of this argument. I still think this is one of the most face detection systems in a phone.

As far as I can tell other solutions simply rely on examining an image of someone, and don't do depth perception/mapping.

        • @SirDale: hmmm and your research on 'new' technology works how? sounds like a lot of backtracking to cover-up a stuff up….if you got off your Apple fanboy d**k for a minute, you'd realise that the software isn't there yet. If you believe their excuses, then maybe you might need to do a tad more research than i my man.

Notice how he wiped both sides of his face before he tried FaceID on the second phone? He knew exactly what he was doing. Either the virtually projected points are affected by sweat beads, or the moisture is reflecting light back at the phone giving it a false reading.

        • +2

          @SirDale:

The comments were that the people who clean the phones/do the set up work caused the problem. I doubt they were the iPhone engineers.

Well that's what Apple would say, of course. If the scanning did actually fail, do you think they would admit it? :)

I just find it odd that for such a high-profile release, they would assign people who don't understand how the system works to prep the phones backstage.

This is the biggest, richest company in the world unveiling their most expensive phone ever. They spent ages explaining how sophisticated their scanning system was - so I would certainly expect an engineer or at least someone who actually knows how the phone works to be prepping the phone right before that feature is demo'ed live - wouldn't you? This shouldn't be amateur hour. It's easier for me to believe that the new system failed on stage - it's new technology after all. The same thing happened to Bill Gates when he demo'ed Win98 live on CNN too.

As far as I can tell other solutions simply rely on examining an image of someone, and don't do depth perception/mapping.

Sure, it looks like they just put a Google Tango camera array on the front. But why is it so much better than iris scanning?

Face ID requires you to look at the screen, so it won't work with sunglasses that block infrared light. Will direct sunlight on your face wash out the IR dots projected on your face? Do you have to wipe your face oil off the front camera first? It'll be interesting to see how well it works in real life.

As to hackability, it'll be interesting to see if someone fools Face ID. It'd better take a lot longer than the 48 hours after launch it took for TouchID to be tricked. Even the iris scanner on the S8 was tricked 3 weeks after launch.

I'm sure people will miss being able to just unlock their iPhone and glance at messages when it's sitting flat on their desk by just pressing the home button. With face scanning they'd have to pick it up instead.

They basically made it less convenient to unlock the phone but jazzed it up with a fancy marketing video.

        • @andrgram:

"if you got off your Apple fanboy d**k for a minute"

is there a filter/hide option in ozbargain?

        • -1

@SirDale: lol really? you are butthurt over that statement? grow up mate, this is a public forum and community. If you don't get both sides of the argument, this would be a fanboy-fest. You didn't acknowledge any other part of my comment nor did you acknowledge @eug which means you agree with both our statements.

it was a 10-year anniversary edition, it was a Keynote performed inside the Steve Jobs Theatre…it's a pretty big deal.

        • Apple released some info on their facial scanner today.
          http://mashable.com/2017/09/27/apple-face-id-how-it-works/

Ineterestingly, Apple says siblings might also be able to trick the system into a false positive. That seems a bit strange given the technology they were touting at the launch.

If you change your look and the phone detects a partial match, it'll fail login and you'll have to enter your passcode in. It'll then update itself with your new look. I wonder if that will end up diluting the data set making it easier to fool in the future.

        • @eug:

As to hackability, it'll be interesting to see if someone fools Face ID. It'd better take a lot longer than the 48 hours after launch it took for TouchID to be tricked. Even the iris scanner on the S8 was tricked 3 weeks after launch.

Replying to my post here. Looks like it didn't take long - Face ID has been fooled with a mask. These people must be better than the Hollywood mask makers Apple worked with. Or maybe they need two billion images to train it instead of just one billion.

          https://www.slashgear.com/iphone-x-face-id-beaten-with-3d-pr…
          http://www.bkav.com/d/top-news/-/view_content/content/103968…

The attack is just as impractical as hacking a fingerprint reader or iris scanner. It just shows that you shouldn't believe the all the marketing hype companies put out.

  • +2

Always been a fan of apple, but for the average user I really can't see much of a difference between the iPhone 6-8. As for the X, its just way too overpriced for what it is. I'd pay $1,000 for a phone thats going to last me 2/3/4 years, but $1,500 is just ridiculous, I could have a nice week long holiday for that price.

    • +9

I've got an iPhone 6, and it's the RAM that's killing me, with just 1GB it can't really keep Safari and Messages in memory. But the 8 only has 2GB, got to go to the Plus or X for 3. :(

      • I've found the OS pretty efficient and the RAM isn't a massive issue. My 3yo i6 is still pretty responsive. I was planning to upgrade for the camera tech.

        • +1

It is pretty efficient, and mostly it does a good job of freezing apps etc, and compared to say the old iPod Touch 5th gen I have lying around it's amazing. But… maybe I've been spoilt by watching my SO's iPhone 7 launch apps :)

        • yes, the camera with twin lens optical stabilisation, and the bigger screen is the main reason to choose an X if price wasn't a factor.
The 8+ is larger, but the screen is smaller and only has optical stabilisation on the wide angle lens, and digital stabilisation on the telephoto lens.

        • I use my i6 daily almost 2 charges until the battery just wouldnt hold for more than 3 hrs of use. (mod/high use though). Just changed the battery and its like new again. At least the battery anyways, its still a tad laggy everywhere.

    • On the other hand looks like plenty of ozbargaining opportunities over the next year for grey importers.

The Apple Australia Tax on the iphone X is over $180! I would take one year less warranty for the savings.

      • +2

You do realise its absurdly expensive to fix if you break the screen of a grey import, right?

        • +2

Not if you know how to fix it yourself

        • +1

@LDS: And you would assume the average Ozbargainer to be capable of fixing an iPhone?

        • +1

          @MasterNoob:
No…just pointing it out. but you are right with buying AU stock with apple care, it is a much safer option as almost everyone's screens break… I know, I am forever fixing them.

        • +2

If you have an Amex Essential credit card (no annual fee), you get phone screen insurance if you purchase the phone with that card. Obviously there are terms and conditions.

But I do agree with you, having to replace a screen on a phone is an expensive exercise.

And No, I don't work for Amex :p

      • +1

        $180… So… GST?

    • +1

So $1500 for a phone that's going to last 2/3/4 years is not worth it but a $1500 holiday that's going to last only 7 days is worth it, right? :)

      • +31

Memories will last a life time. A phone will be replaced and forgotten.

        • +5

Memories are replaced and forgotten too!
Also, Some people like me use their phone for more than 4-6 hours a day(work and personal use), in my case that's 5-6 times more use than my $1500 tv. I usually upgrade my phone every 2 years, so the iPhone X is about $2/day, cheaper than my daily coffee :)

        • +1

          @GregFiona: since when is 365 * 2 = 1500

        • +2

          @cameldownunder:
          You forgot the extra "x 2" (2 years x $2 x 365 days)

        • @GregFiona:

You need to get out more if you're spending 4-6 hours a day on your phone.. It's overpriced and you've been sucked into the marketing machine of Apple. Functionality wise, it's no different to a 6/7. Sure camera is better and screen res but for $1500 no thanks!!

        • @cameldownunder: 365x2 years x 2$=???

        • +2

@Maz78: I'm always out and about m8! 2 hours/day I'm using waze on my phone driving for work, 1
hour streaming music and using Runtastic running outdoors, 1 hour checking OZB and another hour or more using my phone for work emails and calls!
You obviously don't know what you are talking about! For some people their phone is their tool of trade!

        • @GregFiona: ] Syntax Error

        • @GregFiona:

Waze/email/calls/runtastic all work perfectly on any previous iteration of the iPhone. Hardly graphics/cpu intensive or space hogging apps…

        • @Maz78: Not true, some apps need 10 seconds to open on an Iphone 5 for example! Not all Iphones have got the actiity tracking sensors etc. As I've said before $2/day is not a problem for me, it's around $30 cheaper than a packet of cigarettes/day :)

        • @AdrianW: True
          2$ a day for 2 years 2$ x 2 x356, 2$ a day for 2 years 2$ x 2 x356, 2$ a day for 2 years 2$ x 2 x356, 2$ a day for 2 years 2$ x 2 x356,
          2$ a day for 2 years 2$ x 2 x356, 2$ a day for 2 years 2$ x 2 x356, 2$ a day for 2 years 2$ x 2 x356, 2$ a day for 2 years 2$ x 2 x356,
          2$ a day for 2 years 2$ x 2 x356, 2$ a day for 2 years 2$ x 2 x356, 2$ a day for 2 years 2$ x 2 x356, 2$ a day for 2 years 2$ x 2 x356,
          2$ a day for 2 years 2$ x 2 x356, 2$ a day for 2 years 2$ x 2 x356, 2$ a day for 2 years 2$ x 2 x356, 2$ a day for 2 years 2$ x 2 x356,

        • @GregFiona:

How will you cope waiting 10 secs!?!
          :o

        • When you are dealing with customers, you are on the phone and you put them on loudspeaker/hold trying to open Outlook and find a $500K lease document or a 15K invoice, believe me, every second counts! Not to mention the RAM issue, with older iPhone models most apps in the background have to reload!

      • +2

Absolutely, as someone else just said, a phone will be forgotten about in 10 years, holiday memories last forever.

        • +7

I like to keep a backup of my holiday memories on my IPhone(see camera roll) in case Alzheimer's kicks in :P

        • @GregFiona: But you won't remember where you left your phone [ in case Alzheimer's kicks in ], and you won't remember who the people are in your photos.

        • @cameldownunder: Apple photos have got a "people" folder where you can see all the faces in your photos with their name tagged. Also, the favorites photo album is synced with my apple watch so I don't need to remember where I've left my phone ;)

      • +1

Whatever floats your boat, but I would choose holidays any day compared to just another gadget.

        • +3

1 night with a Deluxe Escort model, also unforgettable. [ not for me any more, but just as a suggestion ]

      • +1

$1.5k can last me 1.5 months in India :D That's enough memories to forget about the iPhone hype.

      • ¿por qué no los dos?

      • +1

It's not about price, it's about the perceived value. What actually make this phone justifiable @1500 asking price? I can't see any reason.

      • You can't get basically the same holiday for $500 you can get for $1500.

  • +4

Surprised they didn't put the x higher in price, enough people who love iPhones that they would get it no matter the price. It pretty much prices out normal people, should just jack it up to 3-4k

    • You mean something like this? gizmodo

      • +2

        😱

      • But you cant charge it wireless-ly with all that gold

    • +2

I'm genuinely surprised that they don't have an official gold plated version for like $100,000 just as a Luxury item for those who can afford it, even if the actual gold content is nowhere near that.

  • +13

Everyone here knows I've been an avid iPhone supporter for many years. However I've been really disappointed with this release. This will be the 4th year that they use the iPhone 6 design. At a minimum, they should have just released two models (4.7in and 5.8in) and made both out of the same premium materials as the X and, most importantly, both should have adopted the thin bezel display. Yeah the average price tag would be higher but its Apple, people will pay.

Overall, a pretty disappointing year in tech for me. I'm also pretty underwhelmed by the PS4 Pro launch, where I think its too expensive for its specs.

    • -1

Note the iPhone X is similar dimension-wise to the standard 8 - the screen is larger than the + due to the lack of bezels. If they made an edge to edge smaller phone, it would be quite small.

  • +24

Overall the new iPhones are pretty underwhelming. Especially considering this was meant to be the 10th anniversary edition of them - and to 'change the way we look at phones'.

The iPhone 8 is basically a 7 that can now wirelessly charge. The CPU, battery and camera have been upgraded a little but other than that theres not much added functionality, this is typically becoming the norm for their new phones. They've changed the sizing around again (like every release) but honestly i dont know why theres such a price difference between 64 and 256 ($250!! more than $1/GB!!). It would cost them next to nothing to make the higher size.

Then theres the iphone X which is meant to "revolutionise" how we look at phones. So whats new and awesome about the X? Its got full size screen with no bezels, facial recognition and again updated camera (over the 8+). Yeah woo, great. not that revolutionary. I mean (and it gets said every release) but android has had that for ages ('decades' in the tech industry). Is it worth 1.6k for the BASE 64gb one? or even 1.8k for a 256? fart no. But will they sell out? Of course they bloody will

Overall for what was meant to be a massive release for them its been a big let down in the iPhone space.

    • +2

So accurate. That make me feel so stupid that ppl still willing to wait in line for iphone with 1500ish .. smh

    • -3

Yet, the best Android phones get trounced in speed tests EVERY year, even by PREVIOUS generation iPhones & a photo unlocks the tech on a Galaxy S8 (which typifies Android phone tech)
So what’s the result? - the market speaks:
      Apple market cap - $815B
      Google market cap - $649B
      Samsung market cap - $255B

      • +3

        But is it worth it?

Just bought a OP5 for my partner, $599 with 6GB ram, good screen, good camera, good build, great battery, headphone jack. Ticks so many boxes, all for $599… including two years warranty.

Would I pay twice as much to get a 10% better experience? No.

Obviously it's worth it for some people, but at this point, speed tests simply don't matter anymore. Even $200 phones do amazingly well at most tasks.

        • -5

No, there are a number of other reasons to pay more:
          - features do what they actually claim
          - integration with MacOS
          - more stable
          - higher resale percentage
          And on & on

        • +2

          @yoyomablue:
how about connecting the device with the latest macbook pro? nope need an adaptor

        • -5

          @phil1311:
          lightning to usb-c cables.
          So yesterday….

        • @phil1311: Don't need wires at all? Who plugs their phone into their computer anymore?

        • @Bargs:
People that need to copy files to and from their devices. And backups of course.

        • OP5 with two years warranty?? Import warranty don't really count. I agree with the other points though.

        • @newsynthetic: OnePlus 5 is offering two years warranty on phones purchased through them.

In addition Australian Consumer Law is applicable to imported goods - it's just the enforcement of the law that becomes the issue.

Since OnePlus 5 is such a sizeable company with a reputation to protect, it shouldn't be an issue.

      • Apple's share of phones has been overtaken by android. What would the Market Cap be of Samsung + LG + Sony + Google + Xiaomi + Oppo + Oneplus?

        • -1

Better add developers' market capitalisation to Apple's then too….
          FFS

        • @yoyomablue: why ?

        • I think Apple is doing just fine against a plethora of Android-based phone manufacturers.

    • Whether you buy an iPhone or an Android flagship, they're all pretty awesome now. If you can figure out what would make the next generation 'revolutionary', I'm sure Apple and every other manufacturer would love to hear from you.

I think the X looks like a great upgrade from my current iPhone 6, for dual cameras+waterproofing+Display+dual speakers+wireless charging+improved battery+massive jump in performance. That's a lot of improvements in the 3 years I've owned the iPhone 6, and I have no idea what they'll do next.

It's still bloody expensive though…but I'll be buying one.

  • -5

Ok too lazy to read full specs but are any the iPhone 5/SE size? Until then I am not bothering. I want something that will actually fit in my pocket.

    • +7

That's super low levels of effort. No, they're sized 6/6+ with the X between the two.

      • +1

Agreed, I'm lazy. Thanks for the response.

      • X actually has a bigger screen than the plus.. but physically around same size as the plus

    • "I want something that will actually fit in my pocket."

The 6s or 7 isn't that big. You must have tiny pockets.

I've got a 6 and it only just fits in my regular jeans pocket, and doesn't fit in my "nice trousers" pockets. It has spent most of it's life on a desk/table/couch.

Yes, most clothes I have that have pockets have tiny pockets. Some don't even fit my 5. Welcome to ladies clothing.

      • Sounds like those female pockets with 0 depth

Can't believe they removed the home button from the iX, I can see where they're going with the full screen idea. I hope the gestures won't be too hard to adapt or hopefully have a virtual home button for older users.

    • I use double tap to wake all the time and it is great! Multitasking and siri might be interesting unless they are on screen buttons though…
