  • Had some of their tea last time. Matcha tasted artificial and bitter. Not nice.

Thanks for the comment. Not sure what you mean by artificial, though. Matcha is 100% ground green tea leaves so it's as real as it gets.

Sorry to hear you weren't impressed with the taste. Your comment about the bitterness is quite surprising because our ceremonial grade matcha is made using tea leaves from the first harvest only. Bitterness is more commonly found in culinary matcha powder, which is largely by design to help it stand out when mixed with other ingredients.

We stand by the quality of our products and we want our customers to be satisfied. If you'd like to provide us with your order number, we'd be happy to look into it and provide you with a refund given you weren't happy.

      Thanks again for your comment,
      Alex

He said it tasted artificial, he didn't say it was artificial. Huge difference folks, huge. You are fake news. #MakeOzbargainGreatAgain

  • Hi rep, any deals on culinary grade matcha?

    • Hi there,

      Not this time, apologies.

      Alex

      • No worries

    • Is the culinary one for drinking? An earlier deal suggests its for cooking / baking etc and makes no mention of drinkability (drinking it on its own).

      https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/276762

I'd be keen to try it if that deal was repeated

Running out of stock that I bought back from Japan.. 🍵

      • Culinary grade is still fine for drinking, it's just a different flavour profile to ceremonial grade.

    • Bro, this is ceremonial grade. If it's good for gods, it must be top grade stuff. The best!

  • a lot of cheap matcha is actually sencha (ground tea leaf, where the plant is grown in the full sun). This makes the ground up product very dark green.

Genuine matcha should be light green and is made of tencha (plant is grown in shade). The taste shouldn't be bitter, and more tart.

    • Good thing our matcha is as genuine as it gets. :)

      • Shade-grown in Nishio, Japan
      • Hand picked leaves
      • Steamed and air-dried
      • Graded for quality by experienced tea sommeliers
      • De-stemmed/deveined
      • Ground to order

      Cheers,
      Alex

  • Doesn't it get bitter when mixed in boiling water rather than in correct temp? That's my experience with tea leaves so thought it would be a similar result.

    • there is a prescribed temp for brewing green tea and matcha. Look for it in Wikipedia.

      "d then about 60-80ml of hot (70–85 °C or 158–185 °F, not boiling,[11]) water is added."

      • Yes, above is correct.

We've also got some informational videos and guides on our website. Boiling the water can absolutely alter the taste and the correct temperature is so important given how fine/delicate matcha is.

  • This is a great deal! I want to add the black whisk holder to the purchase - do you have any photos of what this actually looks like?

    • Okay all good, I found the item on your website. :)

      • Sorry for the delayed reply! Glad you were able to find them. Please let me know if we can be of any further assistance.

Hope you enjoy your matcha set :)

        Alex

  • Hi all,

The Scoopon stock is running low and we anticipate this sale will be ending before the end of the year. Grab yourself a tea set before they return to full price. :)

    Best,
    Alex
