Scammers

Is it just me or are scammers popping up everywhere. it started out as the obvious Nigerian letter scams but over the last 6 months or so I am geting smashed by these things not just on a single email address but on multiple addresses, phone numbers and emails. I am very careful but i can see how people get caught as some of the scams like the dodgy origin energy power bills look superficially to be reasonably legit. Of course the email addresses or the websites they try to direct you to are obviously fake.

I have a small software business and I honestly get 3-4 per day. They are normally emails offering a refund, threatening legal action or for utility bills etc. Many of them are for overseas institutions etc or for banks etc that we dont have an account with so easily spotted but in a larger firm I could honestly see some unsuspecting accounts clerk mistakenly opening the virus laden attachment etc.

recently I am now also getting SMS's either telling me I've won a gift voucher/prize or offering me a refund for something I didnt buy or threatening to tax me for something ridiculous. All of them involve downloading something or opening something. I'm not going to be taken in and I wonder how overseas scammers get Australian mobile numbers to use to send the SMS's. is anybody else being smashed by these guys?

Oh wow…I never win anything….so excited…just..clicking…now! Wait what!

      • Stephen Conroy did warn us about the "spam and scams coming through the portal" back in 2010

Nobody believed him. Even Kogan mocked him. I guess Conroy's laughing now.

I wonder how overseas scammers get Australian mobile numbers to use to send the SMS's.

wherever your information has been leaked. For e.g websites that have been pwned (check on https://haveibeenpwned.com/) will have their databases hacked and the data sold to enterprising scammers and hackers

many of their clients would be amateurs (basically, people who just use scripts they bought online) but some also use low-tech methods of simply calling or SMS'ing you with enticing offers hoping just one or two will take the bait.

some of the more evil ones disguise themselves as big companies, like Google or MS and send you convincing phishing emails.

      I'm jealous.

  • I recently had one from Woolworths. It even appeared or came from the same number I got a notification of delivery from.

Think about all the elderly who have no one else to talk to, at least the spammers are calling them.

haha, I'm thinking about all the scammers with bloody ears after taking a knitting needle to them while talking to my lonely, slightly demented nanna.

On a related note I heard on the radio about a Gumtree scammer getting proscecuted

Interesting data point for the next 'scammed on Gumtree, will the police do anything' kind of post

I think there was one in the UK where the scammers promised £350m per week for the NHS.

I was never really into politics but this just put me off for life. I honestly don't know why people bother spending time discussing / researching politics so they feel like they are voting for the right party when all they do is lie anyway!

They might as well say "we will give everyone $10,000 if we get into power" then just tell everyone to (profanity) off one they get in.

There was a massive breach of emails and passwords so that's why you're getting scam emails. Check www.haveibeenpwned.com

    • Yep already registered with those guys and received an email several months ago. You can change your password but I'm not cancelling and redoing all of my email addresses so i guess i get spammed.

I was so worried about my credit card details that I became a Safe Card Australia Member. As a member I can check online if my credit card is at risk of being stolen. If you'd like me to check your card then simply send your credit card number, expiry date and CVS. It's totally free and only takes 60 seconds.

    • Gimme a sec while I get my cards out of my wallet.

    • That service sounds like a scam.

Yeah, I've been a member of SCAM for ages.
Not long after I joined, my bank noticed suspicious activity, suspended my credit card and sent me out a new one. I then updated my details on the SCAM member portal, but not long after the same thing happened!
I've been sent a new card several times after that because of suspicious activity, even though I have always kept my SCAM member details up-to-date each time.

I'll give them one more chance, but after that, I'm going to close my account…

  • I get an average of 50 junk mail a day.

    • I have loads of filters but a few sneak through. Always amazes me that anybody would think that after me setting up loads of filters to keep them away that if they can somehow sneak through an email selling their penis enlargement pills I will be powerless to avoid throwing my money at them.

      • some get into junk mail and I block them but they still get through. I must've blocked thousands of emails already

  • These scams have been going on for ages and will continue to. As long as there are gullible and greedy people, scams will exist. Some people rely on authorities like the gov and police too much, without realising their power, especially over international scammers.

  • Recently I have been getting a LOT of spam, that is being from 'my email' to myself. Changed my password and nothing changes, cant even block my own email, super annoying.

  • I have a way to block all scammers.
Send me $500 and I'll share my secret with you.
This is a time limited offer so act now!

OK definitely, only problem is that i work on the oil rigs and hard to send the $$. I can arrange somebody else to send you the $$ but they charge a processing fee. I am happy to pay you $1500 if you pay the processing agent fee of $800. I will get my processing agent to contact you via their highly secure and legitimate gmail account. You can pay them using Western Union. Above all however…I am NOT from Nigeria!

The ONLY way to absolutely stop being subjected to SCAMS, is:

    1 Turn your mobile OFF.

    2 Turn your computer OFF.

    3 Don't answer your Land-line phone.

Doing this also stops you from being hacked and subjected to Malware, Adware, Spyware, Worms, Trojans, & ALL associated Virus'

    • You forgot, turn your tv off, your fridge off, basically turn your electricity off… Although you still might get scammed/spammed via your contacts, when they visit you.

      • Time-share agents in shopping malls?
        Stay at home.

        • door knockers?
          Don't answer the door.

  • OK, On Friday I had several calls from offshore Boiler Room guys trying to sell me Tesla shares, this is getting ridiculous.
