How to Prevent Tanning While Playing Tennis?

This is a bit of a weird one. I have been playing tennis for 4 years with my buddy. We always play in the morning at 8:00AM for 2.5 hours of tennis nearly every week, except for holidays or when one is sick.

However, I've become considerable tanned. I'm worried about the sun damage to my skin but also hate going any shade darker.

Can you guys recommend sportswear or clothing that I can wear in summer to prevent skin tanning and damage? I already cake on and reapply sunscreen but I still get tanned.

If there are not options, I will have to stop playing with him as he can't play at night.

  • If you don't look like this yet, then don't worry ;-) Actually it seems to make you popular in google searches!

Wear the burqa or a ninja outfit.

  • You can get long sleeve tops that are cool (they are generally running tops). Not cheap tho

    Play indoors

    • Bit of a shortage in Australia I think, including clay courts. Wish there were indoor courts near where I live

Squash courts, or you could play at night. Why not get your buddy to rub some sunscreen on you.

      • Are you East Asian by any chance?

        • South east asian. I don't mind a bit of a tan. Love it actually but i tan very easily.

If you look at rafael nadal his skin is really tanned and is probably my similar in colour to me.

        • @sleet:

          South east asian.

          That was my 2nd guess.

I don't mind a bit of a tan. Love it actually but i tan very easily.

So what is the problem? People won't (shouldn't) treat you as any less because you have a darker tan.

Tanning is your skin's natural protection against UV damage. If you tan very well and already have a good tan then you're very well protected from melanoma. Vitamin D deficiency is pandemic across the developed world due to our indoor, clothed lifestyles. Sunshine on the skin is necessary for healthy physiological functioning.

        • @Scrooge McDuck:

I love my tan currently. Anymore and it looks like one of those tanning bed victims gone wrong.

Tanning is skin in trauma. It turns leathery and dry when you get older.

It's a cosmetic issue but it is also a health issue. Covering up will protect me from skin cancer.

        • @sleet:

Don't believe everything you hear from the Cancer Council. They have a very short sighted agenda.

  • One of my mates wears one of those sports sleeves, bit more airy than a long sleeve I guess.

    Or play at 6 am.

The courts we go to don't open until 7.30AM but even then the sun's UV is still incredibly strong especially in spring and summer.

Have you considered switching to Wii tennis?

    Hire someone to hold umbrella?

    • PUH (Personal Umbrella Holder).

    Bikies

Bikies to hold the umbrella? Or are bikies the umbrella?

      • +4

        bikies to threaten the sun

        • Is it the suns fault or the OPs skin?

        • @Drew22: it's the wife fault because she wants husband off from tan.

  • facekini

  • Ask Pauline Hanson

    Or play table tennis instead

I made a post about this. They changed the formula for sunscreen

    • Yeah, but you'll be right under your tinfoil hat. 'They' can't get you there.

  • Slip, slop, slap, wrap. drops mike

    • What wrap would you recommend while playing tennis? Is what I'm after :P

      • I wear cancer council polarised sunnies. Covering your skin is best and staying out of the sun between 12-2 pm is ideal, it's the heat of the day. Asking you courts to install a sun sail may be an idea.

  • Switch to another sun screen brand?

  • Long sleeve and full length compression tights and tops.

I can't play tennis in anything else long as I overheat. These let you breath - I use them to keep warm in Winter but they will also block the Sun (Check their UV rating). They are typically Black but you can get then in white or beige (I haven't seen many other colours).

The original brand is "Skins" but find cheaper versions at Aldi or at Factory Wharehouses.

You'll need a hat (Lendl Style legionnaires Cap with the flap) and collared shirt for face and neck. Sunnies and Zinc I guess for the rest of your face. You can even buy tennis gloves. You might look a bit ridiculous at that point though.

    • Thanks!!! This is what i was after. Not trying to complain too much but I dont mind looking like a clowm on the court as long as I don't overheat

I have a broad brim hat already but looking for a wider brim too.

      Thanks for the suggestion.

  • Zinc cream

  • How do I get a bargain out of this?

    • haha I would hope that the prevention of skin cancer and the health costs associated with it is a bargain enough.

  • The health benefits of playing tennis probably outweigh the risk of getting sun cancers. Just continue to slip slop slap and get regular checkups to catch any sun spots that might appear. You still get a tan when using sun screen, but a good quality one will block out the really dangerous rays.

    Play squash instead.

  • Any bargains?

  • The only effective way to stop tanning (aka skin damage) is to cover up. No sunscreen will protect you 100%.
You need SPF50+ clothing. Google for brands.

    • +1

Thanks! I wish I knew this from the get go. I just assumed UVA and UVB broad spectrum SPF50 sunscreen was enough!! but it isn't!

  • Look up 'Bill Tilden'- that's the style you should go for.

  • So what do you do for the rest of the week while you are outside? 8am til 1030 isn't much in the way of sunlight exposure, that time of day isn't even in the cancer councils get out of the sun times. it could be the rest of the week that is getting you a tan.

    • I work indoors and play tennis comp at night.

I take vitamin D supplements so my levels are good.

The only prolonged exposure is that time period that I play tennis.

Never underestimate the sun in spring and summer even at 8AM. The UV index is already significantly high at that time.

      • Some sun is good for you, and if you are going to get it that is the best time of day.

  • you're not getting tanned from playing at 8.30 in the morning for two hours. get a grip. wear sunscreen and practical clothing.

    • How much sport do you do weekly? In the morning? And for how many years?
