Best Budget 4K TV (with HDR) for PS4 Pro?

Hi Guys,

I'm new here, and currently in the market for a PS4 Pro and a 4K TV, preferably one between 45 and 55 inches (with HDR).

I don't care about 3D or any smart features, as I will be using the TV mostly for GAMING.

Note: I'm also not a hardcore gamer, so TV's with high input lag will not be looked down upon.

The most important thing for me is the picture quality, especially the upscaling capability of the TV.

I would be grateful, if you could also recommend a good audio system (sound bar/headset/home theater) to compliment the setup.

My budget is $1,800 (which should include the TV, PS4 Pro and the Audio System), you can split it up however you wish.

Note: I kept $400 aside for games, extra controller, charging dock and the psn membership(already purchased the 15 month offer).

I've been searching around for TVs but I'm kind of thrown of by the difference in specs as it's a lot different than buying a PC monitor. The price differences can be in the thousands.

My friends suggested to go with TCL or Hisense over Kogan or other local brands. When I asked them why, they said they just heard good things about TCL and Hisense. LOL

Can anyone give me their recommendation from their point of view. It would be much appreciated.

Oh, and I'm looking to purchase the entire setup sometime in this month :)

UPDATE: I went to a few stores over the weekend and I saw all the models up and close. Finally, purchased the LG 55UJ752T 55"inch 4K TV from the good guys (got a 15% discount through their ebay store). I also got the ps4 pro. I did go over the above mentioned budget, but thought its' worth paying a few hundred dollars extra for a good TV.

Will save some money and purchase a home theater sometime next month. For now, I'll settle for the Harmon Kardon speakers which came with the TV (they sounded pretty good in the store).

Once again, let me thank everyone who took time and shared their opinions. I really appreciate it :)

Hope this post also helps others too :)

My brother has a Hisense and I think it sucks.

      • What model hisense, there's a big difference between their series that I see. ?

And what model did you buy as a refurb?

        • +1

So far, I've heard good things about the N7 models. I did see an offer, not a week back, on the N7 model.

The N7 fits in my budget (after the discount) and is definitely one of the TV's I've shortlisted.

@MetaphorOZB would love to hear on what you feel are the pros and cons of the TV.

@The Wololo Wombat could you share which model does your brother have? Its just as @PVA said, I feel there is a big difference between their series.

        • @anonymous-grad: Unfortunately my brother is not the type who would know the model of his TV lol….

        • @The Wololo Wombat: LMAO. Same goes for my older bro too, so I know the feeling :D

        • @The Wololo Wombat:
If that's the case I assume it wasn't the high end range.( huge difference, just like there's a massive difference in the LG and other brands, low end to high end )

What was the refurb you bought?

        • @PVA:

http://www.techbuy.com.au/p/398458/HOME_ENTERTAINMENT_LCD_LE… This model, not from this website though!

I got it for $1400 delivered. The ambilight is amazing! Thought I would hate it, but it makes a huge difference.

          @The Wololo Wombat:
Yeah, Philips has had this for ages, I remember back in plasma days they had similar, it's meant to trick the eye into a better picture some how and is meant to work well.

No HDR on this TV, if that's really needed anyway, but has 3D that most don't now. 2015 models like this, they all had 3D didn't they.
Good specs and features it seems.

        • @PVA: 3D died like curved TVs will hopefully die!

        • @The Wololo Wombat:
          Yeah, wouldn't want curved.
Are you daniel90, review on 3rd on Philips site

          @PVA: Yep! That's me!

I just got a reply from Phillips, they don't/can't ever support 4K Netflix, but I plan to get the new Apple TV which will.

        • +1

          @The Wololo Wombat:
Enjoy the tv, the 4K Netflix is limited in programming anyway .

      • I have a 65" Hisense and its terrible. Specifically takes a few minutes to "load" the tv when you turn it on, sound is garbage and the "smart" features are useless as too slow.

  • "The most important thing for me is the picture quality, especially the upscaling capability of the TV", this was one of my priorities when I purchased a 4K HDR at the end of last year, and from everything I read SONY have the best upscaling because of their X-Reality PRO.

In the end, I got a x930D 65 inch. If you could track down last years Z9D, you might be able to get a bargain on the best set they had last year, but it would probably still be more than $1,800

The X850D from last year could probably be had for $1,800.

    • @masterpupil Thanks for sharing. Unfortunately, these TV's are way out of my budget :(

But yea, many PS4 pro players suggested that sony has, if not, one of the best upscaling technologies. Its sad that none of their TV's (with HDR) land in my budget :(

      • The X7500D also has HDR support. If you could find stock, surely a 55 inch would come within budget.

        • Noted. Will keep an eye out for it.

Although, the 55 inch is for 2k on Sony's official website. So, I have to be extremely lucky to get a huge discount on that model, assuming JB or HN find stock.

          Thanks though :)

OP is looking for a modest 45" to 55" TV yet most replies are about 65-70" beasts. Even within the same range, smaller TVs often use different panels.

    • :(

On the bright side I'm glad that people are sharing their experience, this way I get to learn tons about what to look out for when shortlisting the TV's :)

So yeah, I'm really grateful to everyone who is taking time and sharing their views :)

      • As per the other suggestions, rtings is pretty good. I would consider getting a Sony to match your PS4. If you're not in a hurry, wait until November or early December. Sony often has great promotions on that time of year!

        • Unfortunately, I have delayed it for too long, so I made up my mind to purchase it sometime this month :)

Here's to hoping I get extremely lucky and find a good deal on one of the good TV's with HDR

    • Hell, I bought a top of the range Samsung 65" they vary between 2 different panel manufacturers, one being completely trash.

Hey @AlextheMeerkat thanks for sharing. Yes, few users have suggested that exact model. I have shortlisted it for now.

Although, someone did mention that the motion can be choppy on the 49+ models. can you share your experience if you have purchased the TV?

      Thanks :)

  • I've a Pro and am biding my time for another year or so before I get a 4K set. They're on the cusp of being properly fantastic and affordable, but I don't think the affordable solutions out right now would see me flying happy for the next decade.

EDIT: Sorry, no recommendation, just my thoughts on the market at the mo'. I will add that the Pro really isn't worth it on a 1080p TV.

    • @OfTheOverflow thanks for sharing your thoughts. I totally agree that 4k Tvs are still evolving. Maybe that's why I'm looking to settle for a budget TV.

Although, many have said there is a noticeable difference in experience when playing on a 4K TV with HDR. That's why Im trying to find the best budget TV with HDR.

Due to marketing hype, I'm unable to spot the difference between Tvs that offer true HDR and ones that's don't.

Hence my reason of bringing the topic up and seeking professional opinion from fellow Ozs :)

Doesn't help you, but i got the kogan 48" 4k tv as a pc monitor for around $400. Really awesome for gaming and productivity (especially large Excel sheets). R9 290 drives it reasonably well in most games.

    • @OzzyOzbourne Yea, I heard a few people suggesting Kogan TV's. ALthough, after going through a few forums, I heard many complaining about the after sales service of Kogan products. Not only TV's heard their other electronics have below average service levels.

Did you ever encounter a problem with any Kogan products? If yes, how did you find the service offered to fix that problem?

  • yes, go for tcl or hisense, they are big company in china, sourced parts and quality control are better.

Kogan, not sure who made them, might be a very small company.

    • @jjj123 Will keep that in mind. Thanks for sharing :)

BTW, do you happen to use any of the said Brands?

  • Don't go budget, not worth it, go for LG's lineup, or Sony's new A1E, you'll regret buying the budget…

    • @jerjergege Any reason in particular you feel that budget TV's aren't worth it?

It might be worth it if you could share your experience :)

      • Just the tech used in the TVs, the panels might look good, but the rest of it is usually shit, slow OSs, not most of the Smart TV features and just bad user experience.

Input lag is a big issue here since you are wanting to buy one for PS4 Pro gaming, even with gaming mode they are going to have really bad input lag.

I myself wouldn't buy a TV for gaming, I'd buy a monitor, however for a PS4 pro it would not be worth it as the PS4 only output at 60Hz and most games would run at 30 - 60Hz, the monitors I own atm range from 100Hz - 200Hz.

This is the best review site for most TV models.

        http://www.rtings.com/

Model numbers are a bit different as the reviewers are from other countries.

You don't need to trust strangers on the internet, but budget devices aren't very good out of the box and you'll just have a desire to get a better one earlier than if you'd just spend a little bit more since TVs are a long investment, you don't upgrade one every 2 years like most people do with phones.

        • @jerjergege THanks for sharing. I have scheduled to visit a few stores and test out the TV's in-store.

It would be ideal if they let me connect my friends PS4 pro, but I'm not sure if they will allow me to do that.

Nevertheless, I will take his PS4 Pro with me and see how things go.

BTW, do you consider Hisense and TCL as budget TV's? The 2017 models have really good specs on paper.

        • @anonymous-grad:

I do find those brands to be more budget, just because they are no names making a name for themselves recently. AND their core set of products are not the best.

If there are issues, software patches and updates, the larger companies are quicker, warranty issues, the larger companies have more service centres with better lead times.

The larger companies are the ones who design and develop this tech, the smaller companies mostly purchase parts and put it all together where as the larger companies like sony, lg, samsung panasonic, create them and use their parts to their full potential.

I highly recommend LG as they are the leading company in display manufacturing, even sony uses their panels, or like every other company uses Sony's cameras in smartphones. Samsung is also good however I personally don't like their out of the box display calibration, if I were to own one i'd need to get the screen calibrated.

The larger companies operating systems and apps are far better, just depends on what you want I suppose, LG's remote is like a wiimote with motion controls and all this, I personally like Sony's.

As you said yourself, it would be good to test yourself so you can see exactly what you want, since a TV is something you keep for a very long time.

Considering that this poster got an immediate neg, I tend to agree with him/her.
      I'l give them a +

I have a Mid-classed LG 4K TV and a cheapie JVC TV purchased @ Big W and I can say, although the JVC does the job (yes it has 4K chroma 4:4:4 @ 60hz - 8 Bit panel) but .. no comparison to the LG.

      Cheers

  • Hello People,
I am in the same boat & need some inputs from people. I am considering Hisense 55N7 & Sony 55x8500E. Main purpose is watching Netflix movies, news channels, Kids cartoon/movies besides PS4 gaming on the TV. I would be using the TV in my main room which is quite a bright light room (next to the window). So want to understand reflection point too. I have read few good reviews about 55N7. However, read reviews in threads that the media player has some issues with playing videos greater than 1920 pixles etc. Besides someone recently complained about the fast motion sensing (sports & gaming being distorted) on 55N7 .
The price of this TV is currently around 1450-1500 AUD with prime players. Ebay sale was around $1240. I have managed to get one of the dealers to get it to $1300 & my employer has a 7.5% corporate discount. so the price comes to $1,200. So its cheaper than Ebay price. I am happy to share the details once I have got a final confirmation from the store. Meanwhile, please share your thoughts.
Another option I have in mind is Sony kd55X8500E. I have managed to bring it down to $1,620. again I will get 7.5% employer discount on it. so the final price on Sony is $1,499. I feel 1500 is a very good price for a Sony 8500E. However, with X'mas just around the corner, do you think we can see this one around 1500-1600 mark? So we can potentially bring it further $100-200 down.

I am confused in between 55N7 & Sony kd55X8500E (Price difference of 300$ <+ve point for N7>, I will be using the TV for lot of gaming. should I go for N7 or Sony <fast motion sensing minus point for N7?>, How good is access to apps, netflix etc?

    Thanks.

    • Why don't you go to your local JB Hifi and see them for yourself.
I would say that they stock both TV's.
Usually the staff are pretty good in giving their honest opinions. From my experience anyway.

Edit: I'l recommend the Sony XE8500D hands down (going by the specs). It has Native 100Hz refresh rate.

      Cheers

  • I recently picked up a Hisense 55N7 + Voll B44/S6 set. Only regret is the default tv software on the 55N7, nothing that can't be fixed with a separate media box though.

Would also highly recommend the Voll speaker set, fantastic sound and the system is very upgradeable in future.

I own both a Hisense 55M7000 and an LG B6 OLED TV. I did a crapload of research and spent many hours at shops looking at the same videos on different LCD/LED TVs before I settled on the Hisense. As far as picture quality goes, it's really amazing for the price and has black levels closer to much more expensive TVs, the colours are also rich and detailed. It really is unbeatable value at that price. Having said that, the HDR performance on the Hisense is poor, it's not that it looks worse than normal TV, but it just hardly makes any difference on the Hisense.

Since I bought the TV primarily for HDR gaming, I eventually just gave up on the Hisense, forked out and got the LG B6 55 inch OLED instead (though I still have and use both). I felt bad spending the additional money at the time, but in retrospect, it was worth every penny, the HDR support absolutely sh1ts on top of the Hisense. And even on non-HDR content benefits from the OLED technology, things just pop in a way that is not possible on an LCD-based TV. It's hard to explain, but the OLED TV is just much more immersive. The sound on the LG B6 OLED's is also decent enough that you may not even need to invest in a separate soundbar. At least, that's what I found, whereas I use a Bose Solo 5 on the Hisense.

With HDR, you really get what you pay for and the entry level HDR TVs simply don't deliver the same experience. My recommendation is to save up a bit more and buy an OLED instead. The LGs come up for around $2500 for a 55 inch these days on ozbargain and it's worth the extra money. If you think about it long term, the extra $1000-odd dollars only works out to be around $1 a day over a 3 year period. So it really isn't that much more expensive when you consider how long you'll be using it.

  • What do people think about the Polaroid tv's sold at Big W? Seem to have great reviews on the net (for the prices). $550 for the 4K in 49" and $699 in 55"

    • "Polaroid tv's"
The name was sold off quite some time ago. I saw their tablets that Hardly's was trying to flog off about a year ago, and they looked like a low-rent alternative to Pendo with abysmal specs…
You get a 60 day return at Aldi for the Braun, and my ~$360 40 inch handles 4K2K @ 30 fps ok for general duties as a can't-be-shagged-getting-out-of-bed monitor.

  • Alright I've purchased the LG 55UJ752T 2 months ago and been playing roughly 10 to 20 hours a week and so far the following is my review

The TV is amazing when playing 4k games like horizon zero dawn and deus ex mankind divided. The 100hz refresh rate helps alot. So far, I've experienced no lags while playing in UHD mode. The Harmon Kardon speakers are awesome, though you still might need a 5.1 or 7.1 system if you want the ultimate experience. The smart remote also helps loads when navigating through the OS.

The only cons I can think of are the LG OS does not have many apps, for example there's no Spotify. So if you want to listen to music, you'd have to either connect your laptop or listen through your ps4 which is annoying.
Be advised that you do not want to play or watch a movie during the day time, as the screen gets dull because the light reflects off it. (especially if the scene is at night). During the mornings, I just drop the blinds so that i can enjoy my game.

That's my review, msg me if you have any queries and hopefully I can answer them.

    • Hi I know this is an old thread. Looking for a 4K TV 50" or less for my driving rig. I play GT Sport on PS4 pro. The screen only seats 1M from where I sit this is why I don't want anything to big. Is the LG still the best recommended TV.
