E570p's price just kept on dropping. Just got a new coupon code from Lenovo — OZGAMING that takes $259 off ThinkPad E570p so the base model is now $1040 delivered. Here are the specs:

  • Intel Core i5-7300HQ
  • Windows 10 Home
  • 15.6" FHD IPS
  • 8GB DDR4 RAM
  • 128GB SSD
  • NVIDIA GeForce 1050ti 2GB

A few things to note

  • It still has an internal 2.5" bay so no need to upgrade the SSD — just source it externally and install yourself. SSD deals.
  • Realtek RTL8822BE is crap, and there's no option to change it. People have been able to change it to externally sourced Intel wifi though.
  • 3 year NBD warranty is also at 50% off.

  • Any deals on the t450?

    • You mean T470? No "OzBargain special" but it's on their weekly specials — $1849 for

      • i7-7500U
      • Win10 Pro
      • 14" FHD IPS
      • 8GB RAM
      • 256GB SSD PCIe-NVMe
  • It still has an internal 2.5" bay so no need to upgrade the SSD — just source it externally and install yourself.

Does that mean 2 SSD's? The original and a new one?

    From the specs:

System supports M.2 SSD and 2.5" HDD at same time

    • +3

It ships with a (surprisingly high quality and overengineered) plastic placeholder in the 2.5" sdd/hdd slot. I personally added a 2TB hdd for extra storage instead of another ssd.

The default ssd is m.2 style.

    • Friend, you can have both in at the same time but im pretty sure he means its cheaper to diy.

I'm looking for somthing to replace my Dell XPS 14, it's old but still works =) I do alot of photo editing but recently started to edit GoPro footage while it's 4k it just can't be edited on this old Dell..

Would this be ideal for 4K editing? or should I be looking at a regular PC build ?

I even found the old Link to my laptop on ozbargain :P https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/46442

    • The latest 6 and 8-core Ryzen 7 processors would absolutely destroy a i5-7300HQ when it comes to productivity.

      • +1

Yes but that's desktop vs laptop. This laptop is good enough for 4K editing given you use GPU-accelerated software like Resolve. Of course Ryzen will be better and a 4K display might be needed. All up to your budget I say.

    • IMO you're better off with an i7 if you're seriously going to be 4K editing .. I'd be looking at the XPS 15 9560

  • +3

pretty crazy that a 2017 $1000 laptop will outperform 2016 gaming laptops worth over double the price (asus rog, alienware etc)

    • Like?, few examples please

      • +2

the notebook GTX 1050 ti is slightly faster than a GTX 970m. last year you would be hard pressed to find a GTX 970m notebook under 2k. even right now punching a 970m into static ice shows $2k+ laptops. you'll find examples if you really want them. the huge reason for this is nvidia decided to make their laptop GPUs basically the same speed as the desktop equivalents. previously it would be like 50-75% power of the desktop version.

        • Comparing just the GPU's sure yes, 1050ti outperforms, but CPU and SSD I dont think so.

        • @praga: tbh the cpu would outperform it, the ssd speed would too. capacity and memory size about the only diff

        • @xEnt: i7-6700HQ is a 4 core 8 thread processor with a slightly higher clock speed. Not to mention that it also supports HT

        • @praga: true, maybe it doesn't outperform it, but it should come close. still kaby lake vs skylake.

        • @xEnt: I am interested in getting this deal but the processor is putting me off and I don't want to pay extra 400 to get the i7 processor.

        • @praga: if its for gaming, which it would be, the hyperthreading won't hit you that hard. the GPU will bottleneck before the CPU will.

        • @xEnt: I will be mostly using it for Development, hence I need a really powerful CPU

  • I just opened up my E570P and tried to find the mini PCIe wifi chip, unfortunately it doesn't look easy to get to.

Might have to wait for Lenovo to release a service manual to see how exactly you'd get to the realtek chip.

    • what is so bad about the supplied WiFi Module?

In your photos is that battery replaceable?

      • Yeah, the battery cable is a bit tricky to unplug. Take care not to break any cables when attempting to remove it.

Wifi transfer speeds are slow, and it also drops out every 2 minute interval if I leave it at default settings. Had to weak the driver to get it to work nice.
I now just use a USB dongle for wifi.

        • that sounds a tad annoying.. is the E570 have a different wifi module? surely it would just be driver related one would hope

        • Surely that's just your wifi network not the laptop

Only buy if you really need a laptop right now. New chips will be available soon.

    • When's soon?

      • +1

Some laptops with the new CPUs are already up for preorder so I'd say next month or so.

    • Not for this price. This is a steal.

      • +2

Not really. New "u" CPUs are 4 core 8 thread 15w chips with higher boost clock than the current "hq" offerings. The new "hq" chips will be 6 cores.

  • Any E470 Deal?

  • +1

Don't forget Amex cashback offer. Need to increase memory and hard drive. Essentially this deal. https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/321859
Don't forget cash rewards which would bring this down to about $1000 for 16gb and 256 ssd.

  • For the record I went in and customized this by adding an i7 and 16GB of RAM and applied the OZGAMING tag and it brought it down to $1,545.00 which is definitely enough machine to be doing 4K video editing on..

    A good bargain IMO

$500 for hyper threading and another 8gb of ram? seems steep to me.

      • Would the i7 be a huge improvement over the i5 in terms of performance?

        • +1

A reasonable improvement in PassMark benchmark scoring:
-i5-7300HQ scores around ~6800 points multithreaded and ~1850 singlethreaded
-i7-7700HQ scores around ~9000 points multithreaded and ~2000 singlethreaded

So the i7 is a pretty solid ~25% better in heavily multithreaded apps that are able to make use of the extra 4 threads, while single threaded apps or apps that only use a couple of threads will see around ~10% better performance which can be entirely attributed to the 300MHz higher base/turbo clockspeeds on the i7.

The i5 is still a proper quad core, not a dual core with hyper threading like some of the lower wattage i5's or even some i7's, so for most users that do moderate home/office multitasking, gaming, and professional work the i5 will still do the job. If you are using it as your primary workhorse and you do a lot of heavy multithreaded professional work then the i7 is a worthwhile upgrade if you are happy to cough up the $400 :) Although at that price point the deal isn't as good value, as you can find similar laptops with the same CPU in the under $1600 price range.

And in saying all of that the recently announced Intel 8 series CPUs for laptops are going to bump even the low wattage i5/i7 CPU's up from 2 cores to 4 cores. When they are released you might find smaller quad core laptops more suited to very mobile work, minus the gaming graphics card, for cheap. If you don't game the onboard Intel GPU is fine for even 4K video playback or basic GPU accelerated work.

As for the $105 RAM upgrade to 16GB, that's pretty good as even if you bought an extra 8GB DDR4 SODIMM elsewhere and did it yourself you would not be saving much if any money there.

        • @Zenskas:

Nice reply, cheers. So for using Photoshop, would the i5 suffice? Thinking of just upgrading the RAM to 16GB

        • @oxblood8:

Yep, it will do the job quite well :)

If you are working with largish files or want to multitask a few other programs alongside Photoshop (even a web browser with a fair amount of tabs open will easily eat up several gigs of RAM) then go the 16GB to have yourself covered. Running out of RAM is a far bigger hit to performance than the i5 vs i7, and it is only $105 extra which is great.

  • Got one of these from the deals a couple weeks back with the 7700HQ and 16GB of RAM, just arrived yesterday. Overall seems like a pretty solid laptop, especially for the price.

As others have mentioned though, the WiFi is pretty bad. I've had it drop out several times and I haven't even had it for a full day yet.

The colours on the screen are also pretty terrible - initially things that should be purple looked light-blue. I managed to make it look a bit better through the Intel graphics settings but I don't really know what I'm doing there so it's still not quite right.

    • Can you change the WiFi?

  • Upgraded to the 16gb ram and 256gb ssd will bring it down to $1095 after amex, do you guys think the 32gb ram would be too much?

  • has the coupon code expired?
Coupon code is not valid for the current cart. Please input a valid one.

    • Expired yesterday.

      • thanks scotty, checked the same after posting the comment. Trying to find something to use my Amex cashback.
