No cam or gimble. Thanks but i'll pass.

    • Just mount a Canon Digi Super 86 and you're good to go.

  • Are they any good for just flying?

The software (arducopter) and mission planner is a pain inthe arse. There are hundreds of parameters, and every so often they change them or the what the values mean and of course the doco is out of date so your stuck trying to figure things out. Its a bloody mess, who wants to waste time reading out of date doco to find out whats changed and so on, every time theres a release or update.

That said theres also px4 and qc i have never really used that much myself.

Life is too short, with a DJI phantom or mavic you never habe to stuff about with pids and other params. its just fly.

There was also gps problems, because 3dR took short cuts in shielding the gps and many other similar problems. Theres a reason why 3dR is basically broke because their products are crap. Pay a little bit more and buy a DJI and fly the thing instead of working thru problems on the ground.

While I concur with this post, DJI are not without their issues. My Spark seems to need an update every time I take it out. My dads Mavic needs an update nearly every time we go out.

DJI are great if you own Apple products to interface with them, but hopeless if you have Android. My iPad works great, my Nexus phone, not so much.

Now, my Phantom 3 Adv. is exactly as 99cents says above. I get it out of the case, jam the battery in, let it warm up and fly it. It's that simple.

The only other drone I have that is as easy as the DJI to set up and fly is the Xiro Explorer. Plug in the battery and go…

Someone else has posted a deal for a Phantom 3 with 2.5k camera and gimble that is way more superior to this and probably works out cheaper once you factor in gimble and Go Pro for the 3DR. The Phantom is light years ahead on simplicity and fun.

        • So… the 3DR could communicate with Gopro? That is to do live views of the drone while it's in air, and full control of the gopro via the 3DR's controller?

@PAXA359: I don't know much about the 3DR Solo, but I would assume that there would be some way to view live footage from the GoPro through an app on a phone. As for full control of the GoPro, I don't know. You would have to read up on that, but maybe a yes.

What I'm saying is, you would need to buy a gimble AND a GoPro for the 3DR. So potentially you are looking at another $200 for the gimble and $300+ for a GoPro for a cost of about $800+ all up. The Phantom 3 deal listed above is cheaper and from reading about comparisons between these two, it's usually the Phantom that comes out on top.

I own a Phantom 3 Advanced and can't fault it. It has well over 45+ hours of flight time and still flys the same as it did from day one. It's easy to set up and use and there is a lot of parts and accessories I can buy for any of my DJI products. It's hard to find anything for the 3DR.

If you are looking for a drone to take out of the box, set up, fly and take some nice photos and videos, it's very hard to pass up the Phantom 3 deal above. If you want a more industrial feeling drone and have no problem tweaking and playing around with open source quad controllers, don't mind not being able to easily find parts, then the 3DR may suit your needs better.

          @PAXA359:
Yes, the Solo controller has full GoPro 3+, 4 Silver/Black function controls (and gimbal control - extra purchase, but currently available at Harvey Norman for $99)
Live video feed is sent back to controller via linked iOS/Android device.

I recommend looking at the short 3DR Solo training videos to see what's in the box and how you can get up and flying pretty quick (well, I did anyway)…

Two parts, yes the video feed from the gopro is transmitted live back to you. You can verify this just search on YT for examples.

I believe the 3DR can also control the gopro, change settings (framerate etc) on the go in flight.

Dont forget this package does not include the gopro or gimbal, which by themselves arent cheap. It would cost you more to get the solo + gopro + gimbal than to buy the p3 and the p3 is a better machine.

        • Thanks for all the replies guys!! Cheers.

I have the Solo, mainly for aerial photography/videography.

With the 3DR Solo app (iOS / Android) or Solex (Android) "just flying" is simple.
