USB Desktop Fan with 3 Port Hub $2.50 (75% off) Woolworths

731

Nationwide deal, fan is actually pretty strong. Yes hub is 2.0, but for a lot of people this is still sufficient.

    Tried & returned.
These fans have been sitting on the shelf for years - at various higher prices.

Bought the Hub USB Tower Fans for 50c in 2015 & these were there then. So stock will be limited or unavailable at many stores. Haven't seen in local Woolies for a long time.

Didn't like this fan as much as the 50c oscillating tower fans. Just pushes less air in 1 direction. Fan can be tipped back but blades are small.

Only advantage is the 3 USB2 ports. But cable plugged into USB ports to power another device, means it moved with cable movement. So I won't be searching for scarce local stock of these.

    Hub is Woolies trademark.
3 out of my 4 Hub tower fans are working well after nearly 2 years of regular use.
Comes with Woolies money back guarantee!

    • +1

The hub tower fan is pretty awesome! I've had one for about 3 years — it can no longer turn off by pressing the power button, so I have to unplug it instead when I'm done. But otherwise it works perfectly fine.

Draws very little power for the reasonable amount of cooling that it does when you're sitting at a desk.

      • +2

Great to read. The Tower Fans are wonderful little fans! Draw around 1.5W (300mA @5V). Have run from powerbank.

Mine are often left on & used year round to circulate air around desk & bed for personalised air flow. The much bigger mains powered fans & a/c are used in larger areas.

One of the 4 fans has slowed after a lot of use - plastic around motor spindle has loosened. So now in the repair bin to be glued. (The fans use 2 motors for fan & oscillation.) But @50c each, I bought more than I really needed as spares.

Can you still choose fan speed & oscillation or have all buttons failed? Those are useful options not found on fan in this deal. Buttons contacts may have become worn with use. It uses 4 separate buttons which usually have a long life, so may be fault in controlling electronics. At least it still operates as a fan.

Unfortunately, 3 years is a long life for a USB gadget like this.

        • Ah I totally forgot about the oscillating feature — that no longer works on mine either, sadly. The speed select button still works, but TBH I find the low speed setting pretty useless, so I always have it on max speed. It's fairly noisy but still tolerable.

Yep I remember measuring the power draw on mine using a Power-Mate Lite and it was around 1.5W, pretty remarkable efficiency for a fan of this performance. I have an "Abode" mini desk fan which delivers only marginally more cooling performance and that draws around 15W of constant power — significantly more.

        • @44sunsets:
No oscillation function - that's my favourite feature in this small fan :-(

    • What is the use of these fans? Is it for really hot days? Does it just cool your fingers?

      • +2

To blow! Yes, a good cooling breeze for personal use, rather than a larger fan for airflow in a room (I use both).

I use the tiny Tower Fan beside bed, on desk, etc. Takes up very little space & little power. Handy to have a fan beside bed. Can run from powerbank!
        At 50c - was a great buy.

    • How noisy is the fan?

      • +1

Some reported the Tower Fans as a bit noisy in the deals, but all of mine were very quiet. I have one on bedside table - directing air across my face when sleeping - so wanted a small quiet fan.

The 1 speed fixed fan in this deal pushed so little air it was of no use, compared with the great 2 speed oscillating Tower Fan.

    • I bought two USB 3 hubs from Woolworths a few years ago, for $30 each. Both broke within a few months. Never ever again will I be buying Woolworths branded anything with a USB port in it.

      • I would be wary of their entire Hub range from Woolies. Poorly built & unreliable.

So don't understand the large number of upvotes. People only seem interested in the cheap price :-(

The exception has been 4 Tower Fans, but returned a few & 1 needs a repair.

  • +2

I bought one for $4 8-9 months ago (store special), should have waited longer to get it for $2.5 :(

    • +1

With the Woolies Hub USB Tower Fans, when price dropped - returned with receipt for refund & rebought same fans at lower price.

Hub fans etc like this come with Woolies money back guarantee!

Those fans dropped from around $25 to $10, to $5, $2, to 50c before all stock was gone. Bought 4 at $5, finally paid 50c each😁 May happen with these - if can find stock.

  • +1

Cool, will try to see if I can get one to place it next to my harddrive that is overheating all the time.

    • That is what I was thinking too when I connect my desktop WD USB drive. It gets HOT.

  • +3

Oh I hope there's available in Melb, we're going to swelter in 16oC tomorrow. Bring back winter!

    • These tiny fans won't help much - moved little air so returned fan.

      Yeah - so hot🔥
Cool rainy day at 21c for me. Had proper fan on last night with temp in mid 20s.

  • This is actually pretty cheap - I see this as a 3 port USB 2.0 Hub that I could pick up today if I wanted to with bonus fan functionality. Nice one.

Why did the blonde die in a helicopter crash?

She got cold and turned off the fan.

    I'm here all week

    • +2

      lol wtf

    • But even with the engine off you can autorotate a helicopter to land safely…

      • The blonde was so sick of the fans spinning that he unbolted them from the cabin then, he used a portable cutting torch to just rip the whole thing off and make the joke still work.

  • +2

I used a couple of these two create airflow for my jerky drying system. Did the job, but died after a couple of weeks, maybe a month at best. That said, I was smashing them for days at a time.

    • +1

I used a couple of these two create airflow

I see what you did there..!

  • +4

cancelled the installation of a new carrier, I'm going with this beauty for summer.

  • just got one…… doesn't work. Wop woooomp

    • Theres a concealed switch… in case you haven't seen it

      • +2

It's not a concealed switch, it's an easter egg

      • Yeah the switch does nada unfortunately….. although the usb hub function works.. I actually need a fan, but also need a usb hub…… to return, or not return. That was the last one at Gasworks Woolies for anyone else in that area.

    • +1

Returned a few failures in the other Woolies Hub USB tower fan. Not good build. But finally got good ones - 3 out of 4 still work after nearly 2 years of solid use.

Wasn't impressed with this fan. Bought 2, only 1 barely worked. Returned both ages ago.

Have been on shelf so long, possibly returned stock. Most Hub stock was cleared late 2015.
But has Woolies money back guarantee.

  • +1

I doubt that fan is going to cool anything honestly.

    • It'll take a cool $2.50 from your bank account..

  • Can I charge devices via the USB hub? 1A only?

    • +1

I believe the 5v is just pass through, the output will be the limit of the input.

  • +1

I have three of these, the USB hubs work fine, but do not think that the fan will be useful for actually cooling yourself down. From any more than about 5 inches away, you would be lucky to feel anything at all. It may be useful for cooling down an external hard drive etc., if it is right next to it.

  • i wouldnt touch this with a 10foot pole. What if they short the usb port?

    • +1

That could potentially happen with any USB device. This draws relatively little power & can be run on a powerbank.

But having bought & returned this hub & fan, I would not recommend it as a fan. Power to hub would be limited for many uses. Not a 'fan' of combining very different uses as in this device.

I have run the other Hub Tower Fan without USB hub (1.5W 300mA @5V) for almost 2 years for about 12 hours a day in summer withour issues (except 1 of 4 fans needing to be glued onto motor spindle after some wear). But run off USB plug packs, rather than plugging into computer.

  • Unavailable. Brisbane south-west.

    • Haven't seen these for ages in Brissie SE.

  • TA has the long awaited Genuine Xiaomi Flexible USB Fan USD $0.89 (AUD $1.12) Delivered @ GearBest on now! Should be a much better fan, just no USB hub.

    • Just bought it one minute go!

      • Grabbed one for travel in the tropics.
Just be aware of its limitations like no switch & may not last long.

  • got one, no cable, works intermittently . very strong when it works. went in exchange for another one. new one has cable, fan not as strong….. but at least it works

  • -1

Bought one and its a piece of junk, not worth the $2.50 tax in my opinion peeps

    • Had warned not to buy :-(
Bought 2, only 1 barely worked. Returned both ages ago. Have been on shelf so long, possibly returned stock. etc

      • No worries, just needed to top up my minimum purchase so added one in.

Will take it back when I can be bothered, probably shouldn't have expected much for a couple duckets lol

        • Smart. I bought out of curiosity expecting to return. Most Hub products are a waste of time. But the 50c Hub tower fans I have used for ages have been great.

        • @Infidel: Sounds like you are on a winner with those tower fans, hopefully they'll keep on ticking over!

        • +1

          @cristobaljames:
          I think I've almost got my 50c worth😀

  • Didn't look like a single one had been bought ever at my local store. A cheap novelty item really. But who knows, on a hot day this plus a power bank could be useful.
