As the title suggests, after a couple good years my phone just died. Just out of the blue the power seemed to fail and now it won't start up at all. Tried a new battery but still nothing. I tried CPR (careful phone resuscitation) but nothing. It was all so sudden.
We were close and I'm taking it hard. It is still in pristine condition - screen unblemished, leather unmarked. Its simply beautiful.
In the meantime I have stolen back my old Google Nexus from my daughter - but its not the same.
I need a new phone to take its place.
Good screen, decent camera, good battery life and not too much spy/bloat ware would be on my wishlist.
Android - obviously.
Around $400 or so if possible. Can stretch a little more if necessary.
So, any suggestions?
I am totally open to a Chinese phone if its good and a good deal.
Thanks.

Thanks Scrim.
The Moto Play looks interesting but that code is showing as expired…
I'm also not interested in the mods. What about Xiaomi 5x? About AU $282 (32GB) or AU $313 (64GB)

There is no Band 28 with most ChineseDroids but since you are on Kogan (voda network) it doesn't matter to you.
Is that the international version? Looks good
Hey Scrimshaw
Thanks for your help.
I am now trying to decide between the Mi 5X and the Mi Max 2.
Apart from the Mi Max 2 being huge, any other thoughts/comments.
They are priced quite similarly at the moment - only abou US$15 between them

http://www.geekbuying.com/item/Official-Global-Version-Xiaom…The Mi 5x has dual cameras, allowing you to use either normal zoom or telephoto (2x zoom) or together to give you a depth-of-field effect, (something you will probably never use unless you like photography)
The Mi Max 2 has a larger battery and has enough room to fit in dual speakers for stereo sound. Might be nice if you want to use your phone as a media player for long haul flights.
@scrimshaw: Thanks Scrim
I pulled the trigger on the Mi 5X for US$246.99.
Hope its a good as it looks.
Same Moto Z Play phone now showing as a flash sale ( just under 48 hours) at gearbest for AU$314.53

Would you consider a contract?
No - got 12 months with Kogan on an Ozbargain deal.
I'd stretch my budget a bit and get the S8, very much worth it.
It really isn't worth it other than as a status symbol which is in your own head.
You are right it's an atrocious phone and warrants no merit being regarded as one of the best on the market, i stand with you.
That's quite a bit of budget stretching…
There were couple of IPhone 6 deals if you prefer IOS.
G3 is a great phone.
My son had one, screen replaced 3 times. Eventually he ( well me) got a V20 as a replacement. Now he wants the G6 or V30 ( when it comes out)On that note - OP, consider an LG G6 - I think they are around the 500 AUD mark if you look around. Better designed than the LG G5 (conceptually understood what they were trying to do - but execution was flawed).
My LG Optimus G was ok but after I dropped it accidentally, the reception is hit and miss. DOn't think LG is all that good anymore now.
How about this zenfone 4 https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/325102
looks good in paper.. 4GB RAM, band 28, dual simcardLG G4. I know I know, it has bootloop issue. But it's dirt cheap right now. It's under 200 on ebay (Lowest I've seen was around 159). If u liked the g3, you'll definitely like the g4.
Have a look at the Poll: Best mid range phones under $500 and the Best Flagship phones 2017.
Though, the LG G6 and Moto Z are the only Flagship phones that falls under the $500 budget, and you can only get it for $500 when there is a special sale going on.
edit:
The Moto Z Play is currently available for $307.48 from Gearbest using code ZPLAYGB
It has
no bloatware
5.5 inch FHD AMOLED screen
Snapdragon 625 Octa Core 2.0GHz
big 3510mAh battery
