  • Would come to $13.50 if OW did a price beat. Great deal!

With the data sim (tablets) - does it come with 3gb as per the recharge?

    • +4

      $14.25

Lol not sure at how I got at $13.50! Thanks for the much needed correction :)

        • You worked out the 5% off the $30 and then deducted that amount off the $15

        • @chadiwrx: Oh right oops! haha

  • worth noting it's 1.5gb off peak (8pm-8am) + 1.5gb peak.

    • Off peak and anytime actually, only useful if you run out of off peak first though.

  • Not gonna be dealing with Telstra again after the courier said Telstra demanded a picture of my ID and signature before I could get my FREE sim. Was probably the unlucky ones… https://www.ozbargain.com.au/comment/4921438/redir

The main purpose I see for these is to get $30 credit at 50% off to spend on subscription services or apps / w/e you want (yes even lootbox style IAPs) @ playstore (edit: clarity). Your decision.

    • They need to see your ID. Other family members cannot collect it for you (maybe unless you leave your ID (i.e. drivers license) with them). They do record the last 4 digit of it so it does have to match.

      • I don't mind courier confirming and verifying my ID however taking a picture of my license is not necessary and should not be allowed imo.

come on, $10 please not $15

    I miss the $5 sims :(

    • +7

I miss when these packs were only $1 😁

  • Used one of these packs recently. Activating on Simplicity, is it no longer possible to spend $30 as Google Play credit and still have $30 for calls/text/data?

    • On Simplicity and Long Life it is.
On Prepaid Plus (and I think Data Pass) it is not

      • Odd, I spent $20 on Google Play, used about 100MB's of data and was apparently already out of credit.

I recall being able to previously spend $30 and use 300MB's of data.

        • +2

That's because Telstra changed the plans recently. You used to get bonus data with Simplicity, but now the bonus is gone. You used to be able to sign up for Prepaid Plus, then switch to Simplicity (to get the $30 credit - use it on Google Play, then switch back to Prepaid Plus for the bonus data and calls). However, Telstra have fixed the glitch / loophole.

        • @netsurfer: Thanks netsurfer!

        • @netsurfer:

They fixed the loophole because idiots on ozbargain were constantly posting step by step instructions on how to cheat their system.

        • +1

@Super Kami Dende: Not really… Whirlpool has the info as well. Telstra was meant to fix it early this year when they announced Prepaid Plus does not include any credit that can be used for Google Play. However, due to a system glitch, you were able to switch between plans, take advantage of another plan and then switch back (or switch between plans depending on what you wanted to do).

It was a matter of time before they fixed/closed the loophole. Coincidentally, just before they closed the loophole, they offered extra bonuses to a number of plans (early July). As soon as those special offers ended, the loophole also got fixed.

For people on the old Prepaid Freedom Plus plan and recharge $30 every month, do they continue to have the ability to keep their $30 credit every month? My guess would be yes.

  • Telstra pre-paid starter pack guide has suggestions for getting the most from these packs.

    • +7

WARNING: Telstra has closed the loophole. Don't activate the SIM on Prepaid Plus IF you want to use the $30 on Google Play - you will no longer be able to. When you switch from Prepaid Plus to Simplicity, you now get $0 credit (and you need to switch back to Prepaid Plus, otherwise you lose out on the bonus calls and data). That guide needs to be updated (it is outdated). The change happened in mid July 2017.

In short, if you want to use it for Google Play, you should only pick Simplicity or Long Life AND avoid using data while you are on one of those 2 plans, otherwise your credit goes down fast… so turn off data. You can no longer have the cake and eat it.

It is a resource by Ozbargainers for Ozbargainers. It is updated by Ozbargainers - so update it if there are changes. Telstra makes so many changes.

Can also check Whirlpool Telstra forum although it also seems out of date. It shows there were numerous changes to plans in May. Last edit by an Ozbargainer to our Wiki was on 21 May.

I used to like having my cake & eating it (switching from Prepaid Plus to Simplicity to use $30 on Play) - so thanks for the sad news.

      • No "classic recharge credit" on PP+
Discussed in Whirlpool Telstra Mobile Prepaid Discussion - Part 20 on 28/5 by flemeister & others (near bottom of page)

But a month later people were still advising the switch to Simplicity to use the credit…
Q: Anyone noticed now there's no more recharge credit of $30 if you activate $30 sim pack on Telstra Prepaid Plus…
A: Just last week I activated on Prepaid Plus, got all bonuses + recharge credit. From there I was able to switch to simplicity, use recharge credit then switch back to prepaid plus with the bonuses still there. So if there has been changes they are very recent.
        (4/7)
        Followed by
Q: Thanks can anyone confirm this is no longer the case?
A: What kind of question is that? thefancyman just told you/us that it didn't happen to him as recently as last week. Even if someone else comes in to say they didn't get recharge credit activating on the Pre-Paid Plus offer, all that means is you're not alone, not that nobody else is getting it with new activations
        (5/7) confusing times…

There is a lot to wade through to find relevant details. That's why the Wiki was created, but only of much use if kept up to date.

Can't see the change on Whirlpool Telstra Prepaid Wiki

PP+ used to apply $30 real credit with Starter Pack, which could not be used for much on PP+ (no Play, no creditme2u). So we used to change plans to use it, as it was real credit that transferred to new plan.
Now that $30 has become 'bonus' credit which can't be transferred when changing plans :-(

PP+ now includes Unltd Calls (was $700 cap) & Text

      • Bye Telstra👎
Paying $15 for $30 of credit (choosing Simplicity or Longlife) with no included calls or data is not worth it for me.

After so many years of buying these Starter Packs, using the data & calls, then credit on Play, writing the original Telstra Wiki with cdaddy to understand the complex & changing offers, it's all over😭

Don't forget the $125 cashback from CashRewards !

    • not for prepaid starter kit

      • Was obviously a joke comment. Only for expensive Plans etc.
But we used to get $10 Cashback on these deals via Telstra online.

  • Anyone else having trouble purchasing them ?
I click on "Buy online now" and the next window starts to open but it keeps refreshing.
    The cart never loads up.

    Have tried Firefox/Chrome/IE/Safari on iOS
    Even tried incognito mode

    • Yea I've been having the same problem.
Timestamp in the url seems to keep updating and failing to load.

      • Yeah, exactly … the "ts=xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx" part of the URL !

        This is getting ridiculous
Just tried on my work PC which is behind firewall and protected and all … and still the same thing !

  • Could I purchase one of these, activate it on a long life prepaid plan, and then simply use the Telstra Air hotspot that is outside my house?

What is the most cost effective way to make this work?

Also, if I buy a few, can they be used to recharge or must I activate each sim, and what's a typical expiry?

    Thanks!

    • +1

The free $2 packs can be used with Telstra Air.

    • You can activate on long life & use the Telstra Air hotspot for sure, but the $2 packs will still give you access to Telstra Air if that's all you want them for (thanks Infidel).

You do have to activate the sims separately, but you can then transfer the credit from one sim to another via CreditMe2U if you like (Max $10 transfer per day at a charge of 25 cents per transfer).

Expiry is usually pretty good, the last lot I bought about a month ago have expiry of June 2019.

      • Hmm, that's interesting as Air is literally the only thing I need.

What do I do when I get my $2 sims? I get one for every month? Then activate what on them?

Is there a limit to the number of times I can do this, and is there an expiry on unactivated sims?

        Thanks for the help!

        • Activate it on Long Life, it may give you the longest expiry date. Once activated, and recharge credit has expired, the SIM will deactivate after approx 6 months. So you should only need a new SIM every 6 or 7 months.

There's no limit to how many times you can do this.

SIM starter packs have an expiry date printed on the back.

          FAQ

        • @sween64:

So, activate, do a recharge of the $30/6mth long life option, and ONLY use Telstra Air (ie. don't run out the SIM data during the 6 months or Air will expire too)?

        • +1

@xdirex: He was informing you that: don't recharge, just activate a new $2 SIM every 6 months - once the old SIM is no longer active. Didn't know the $2 SIM can remain active for 6 months without any recharge.

        • @netsurfer:

Ok, wow. Thanks for all of the info everyone.

        • One thing while we are talking about Telstra Air.. If you are moving does it automatically jump between Air Hotspots or does it just disconnect and require to you to connect to a new one?

And any way of having a mobile Air hotspot?
