I've owned a Google Home for three weeks. For me, it's consistently useful for a number of things:
    Setting an alarm while cooking
Telling it to play your favorite radio station (Triple J, Radio National, etc)
Telling it to play your favorite playlist (I subscribe to Google Music)
Asking it to read the news (your choice of news source) in the morning
Asking it about traffic and weather conditions
Asking it to call a number in your contact list

It can turn your TV on if you have a Chromecast connected to your TV which is neat. Tell it to play a YouTube video on "Lounge TV" and it boots up the TV and plays the video from YouTube - but often not the particular video you were after because there are millions of videos with similar names.

The real deal breaker is saying 'Hey Google' or 'OK, Google' every time you interact with it. That gets old really quick.

Podcasts work great too, e.g "Play the latest podcast of All in the Mind"

    • My kids also love to play trivia game just by saying "Ok Google Im feeling lucky"

    • If this is the current ceiling for this device, I'll skip until it does something that is useful to me.

  • Note the deal is for the US version does it work perfectly here in oz? Also if you sign up as a new member
    you get 10% off.

    • Yes it works in the exact same way as an Australian edition. All you need is, a power adapter and set your preferences to Australian & you are done.

      • Thanks friend awesome news! Now does the dog need one of these I am sure he does…. Snacks please… or woof woof

        • Still no up vote !!

          Hmm…

        • @OzSikh: He never said it's a good deal :P in fact he showed some hesitation!

  • How is the sound quality of Google Home compared to Logitech Z600 bluetooth speakers when playing music?

    • +1

The Logitech speakers are a pair so you can get better stereo separation. On the flip side, the Logitech speakers are getting their audio via compressed bluetooth (that some people hate - personally it doesn't bother me) and the music will cut out as you walk away with your mobile, versus the Home which gets it via wifi. Neither those or the Home are as good as a semi decent amplifier/speaker set though. Having said all that, the sound quality from the Home is remarkably good and the ability to change the volume as well as tracks by a voice command is pretty neat. Basically, both volume and audio quality are more than good enough for general use. If you want (and what I've done), you can always have a google audio chromecast hooked up to a receiver and when you want to listen to higher quality music you can use the Home to cast music to that instead.

      • Thanks for the info PlasticSpaceman.
My problem is my amp doesn't have HDMI so I can only get sound from my Chromecast through crappy TV speakers.
I'm still using optical for audio, which is perfectly fine for me.
But as often is the case, technology moves on and one must keep up if one wants to stay in the game.
When CDs came out I swore I didn't need them and was perfectly happy with my mix tapes lol.

With the CC Audio you could plug that I'm via optical or rca. You'd only use it for playing music, but it's an option for your amp without having to upgrade

        • @Spackbace:
I have Chromecast ver 1, does it work with that? I see there's an RCA to optical cable but that's for the Chromecast Audio.

        • @Jaxx:

No sorry, CC is video ( so needs HDMI), CCA is audio (so optical/RCA)

        • @Spackbace:
          ah OK thanks.
It'll be cheaper to buy a CCA then, $59 from jbhifi. cheaper (and less hassle) than a new amp!

        • @Jaxx:

Only if you want it for Spotify etc. Not if you want it for audio from movies

        • @Jaxx:

This was a steal if you needed an Amp upgrade. Would cover you for a few more years thats for sure

        • @Jaxx: yep - the CCA is a neat little device. Depending on what you listen to, you may actually be fine starting with the Home and then later getting the CCA for those occasions when/if you find the Home isn't pumping out the volume you want. I have three CCAs as well as the Home - so can fill the house with music (ala Sonos) if I want.

  • Bought one 2 days ago at $149 including PayPal fees. Oh well!

  • Is this any good as a speaker to listen to music?

    • It is surprisingly not meh. Can pump out a decent amount of volume, and quality is ok. Can't match a good set of speakers or amp, of course, but is fine for general use (listening to news/pod casts/streaming music in the kitchen etc etc). When I'm in the mood for something better, I just tell it to use the Chromecast Audio plugged into my amp.

More State Surveillance. Yes please. https://medium.com/insurge-intelligence/how-the-cia-made-goo…
Along with 24 hour wi-fi. Which as we all know is completely harmless.
