  • Good price, wish my entertainment unit had the space for this, have to get a slimline model that are expensive.

    • Yes but keep in mind that as a general rule the more expensive slimline models aren't just slimline for the heck of it… they're usually a bit higher tech with digital Amp stages allowing you to cram them into spaces with limited airflow. Do that with a cheaper unit that uses an analogue Amp stage and you'll slowly cook it to death. Something to help justify spending more on a slimline unit anyway :)

      • Yeah, I'm aware that slimline are the upper-end, but all I really need is 5.1 with 4K/HDR/3D pass through and this has all that but it's just the size.

I do have an enclosed part with a door it would fit into, but then there'd probably be a heat issue.

Such a shame as this is a really good price.

        • It may not generate a LOT of heat when just listening at normal levels but still best to give it a little bit of air flow. What's the rear of the cabinet made of? If it's just flimsy stuff then you could remove a section to let it breathe. It would also allow easier connections etc. As long as you've got at least say 25-30mm above the Receiver then it might be do-able. Can't be sure though, some units run hotter than others yet some don't get warm even when driven hard so it's a bit of a gamble.

        • @SteveAndBelle:

Back is just cheap and thin plywood, would have to drill with a holesaw for cables, which wouldn't be a problem.

Have about 12" in height and could adjust more, so there's plenty of room but I'd worry if it was left on for ages as it would trap heat.

Also not sure if the remote would work through the glass door as it's slightly frosted and beveled.

  • I'm on the market for an AV unit. Would people recommend this? Reviews seem good.

    • +2

Yes. It's a great little basic all-rounder with good audio quality at a good price. If it ticks the boxes you need then go for it as you'll struggle to find anything else that will do the same job for less.

        Nabbed one.

Nice work! Pretty sure you wont be disappointed. There are hundreds of reasons people would want higher-end models but something like this ticks most boxes for most basic setups. I would've gone for something like this myself however my 'must have' list included Slimline dimensions, Low Heat output, DAB+ Reception, Phono Input. Power & Quality output wasn't as important for the particular setup I was designing it around so I settled on a Pioneer VSX-S520D during the 15% Sitewide sale a few months back. Got one from Italy for about $650 and it's a brilliant little unit!

        • @SteveAndBelle:

Thanks for posting this comment and letting me know about the VSX-S520D. Seems to be the bee's knees for my application. If you plug in headphones, do you need to unplug them to get audio from the speakers? I hate that, but it seems to be far more common than otherwise.

@strangeloops66: Yep… "While headphones are connected to the PHONES jack,no sound is output from the speakers"

        • @SteveAndBelle:

Thanks. And this being a 5.1 surround sound receiver, no second zone workaround.

      • +1

        Same, thanks.

  • Can't comment on this model, but I have an older RX-V775 unit which is a really good unit that just does what it says on the tin - as seems to be the case with Yamaha receivers.

Almost tempted to take a jigsaw to my entertainment unit.

      A 1000 piece or a 500 piece?

      • +3

By the time I finished it would be 1000.

    • I did, and don't regret it one bit. Much better airflow and easier access to cables (also have HTPC in it).
Just be sure you not cutting out anything structural or used for fixing the back on.

  • Damn missed it and sold out

    • You can get in on ebay for $308.80 with PRESENT code http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/142476606850

      • Thanks! Is this the best bang for buck?

        • Seems to be the general consensus, just bought one myself. My amp has been playing up for weeks.

        • @Higibo:

          Thanks mate. Just bought one.

      • Ebay one is $304.75 after Cash Rewards rebate. :)

And were back! more stock confirmed, get in while you can!

    • Purchased. Thanks for the great deal. Is the unit in stock ready to ship or backordered?

      • Stock arriving again today :)

    • Nice, but I'm heading off on holidays tomorrow, if you still have them in stock when I get home will buy one from you.

  • Any suggestions for speakers to pair with?
I've only got a small room so not too concerned with power.

    • If you have patience, visit some Vinnies stores. It's odd how often they have really decent speakers. Picked up a pair of B&W $800 speakers from Vinnies a few years back for $15. Got a few other decent deals. Latest one was a $3,500 Jamo 5.1 speakers for $250.

If you're not patient then keep check ebay. If you find speakers that look good then google it. Rule of thumb, avoid anything from "Sony" or "LG" or any other similar brand. Panasonics are ok but realistically you're looking for Jamo, Wharfdale, etc. Anything like that. Have a look at the more expensive speakers on JB Hifi and keep an eye out for any brands like that.

JB Hifi also have some decent speakers for ok price when they have a sale on but you may be better off ordering online from somewhere else. Look for around 60w (higher doesn't hurt), preferably 6 ohms but 8 ohms are fine too. Nothing below that. Bookshelf speakers are good.

      • Good idea, can't remember that last time I went to vinnies but I don't need anything fancy. Really only looking at a receiver to make my life easier when switching between sources.

        Thanks for the tip.

        • Not a problem at all. One thing I should have mentioned was to avoid anything that doesn't list the Ohms. It can usually be found on the back of the speaker or on the front under the grill if you can remove the grill. Generally you're safe with the older speakers but newer speakers found in surround sound units (Sony, Panasonic, Bose) tend to not list the Ohms and they usually use 3 or 4 ohm speakers. If you use those on the amp without knowing there's a chance you could destroy your amplifier.

    • Depending on your budget, we have a great deal on a couple of floor standers -
