  • $50 a stubby? Must be be some damn good grog.

    • +1

      It is.

If you like Belgian Quads and know your stuff, this is pretty much the pinnacle.

I have a bottle in my fridge waiting on a special occasion.

      • Won't it go off?

        • Belgian beers never go off…

Check out the Cafe Kulminator - they age Belgian beers and have been doing so since 1974

        • I havent cellared it because im going to drink it in a few weeks.

As for aging beers, only high ABV beers tend to lend themseleves to it.

Belgian quads and imperial stouts tend to do best with aging.

      • Any recommendations for similar, but not prohibitively expensive?

Have tried trippels, but don't think I've ever had a quad.

        • +4

Hey caprimulgus. If you want to dip your toe in the water we have another great Quad called the Mad Abbot. It's about the quarter of the price, but still big, rich and beautiful.

          If you want to take a look, you can check it out at the following link;

          https://www.ccliquor.com.au/product/little-brewing-mad-abbot…

          Cheers

St Bernardus ABT 12. From what I recall, they used to brew Westie 12 and the recipes are still reportedly very similar.

ABT 12 is much cheaper too, around $12 a bottle here in S.A

Chimay Blue is another of my favourites, and available at Dan's.

        • @anzacpaul:

La Trappe Quadrupple is also available at Dans, and is a good widely available one too.

        • @MajorGaz:

Have had La Trappe beers before, although I'm not sure what style…probably trippels (was a long time ago).

Might have to try these quads. I'm more of a dark beer man myself (dark ales, stouts, porters and the like), so I'd probably like quads (and dubbels) the best of the trappists.

          @caprimulgus:

          Sound like me.

These are my current favourites (all quite expensive, unfortunately).

          Quads
          - Rochefort 10
          - St Bernardus ABT 12
          - Chimmay Blue (can be found at Dan Murpheys)

          Imperial Stouts/Stouts/Scotch Ale
          - Founders KBS
          - Founders Backwoods Bastard
          - Murrays Wild Things Vanilla Imperial Stout
          - Mornington Peninsula Russian Imperial Stout

Thats about all i can remember off the top of my head.

          Happy Drinking!

        • @MajorGaz:

          cheers for the list!

I've had the KBS (big fan of Founders!), will have to scope out the others!

(I recognise the Backwoods Bastard label, but unsure whether I have tried it somewhere, or just saw it somewhere…oh well, will just have to try it again!) :)

          @caprimulgus:

i mentioned a few here and could list many more but instead suggest you check out this old but good whirlpool thread :)

        • @Craft Cartel Liquor:
Mad Abbot Quadrupel is lovely (had one last night actually) but it strikes me more like a Barley Wine. I can't pick the "Belgian" and Trappist style I seem find in all the others I've tried.

Wish there were more Barley Wines though…

Dan Murphys also carries a Trappist quad. La Trappe.

    • In Antwerp/Belgium it is 10EUR a bottle which is roughly 3-4 times more than you'd pay for trappists Chimay or Westmalle in Antwerp. So it is really good but it is also quite rare, this probably justifies the price.

SO TEMPTING but at $49 delivered, I could get a whole case of decent beer.

    Or 10 bags of goon

    • +7

yeh even discounted its overpriced, the market is a bit like ticket touting.

to put it in perspective, its sold for 1.75 euros at the abbey, mind you its pot luck if you even get on the beer queue to buy it.
for the full effect just fly to belgium, go to the in de vrede cafe and sit down and drink it there to your hearts content. cheaper than buying 2 cases from here.

      Or……..
      doing the maths.
      (48x40)+10=1930

return flight to belgium (did some googling)
      1600
hire car for 3 days (1 day to buy, remainder of day and additional 2 days to drink them all, sleep in car)
      120 euros
      beer
      2 cases = 82 euros
      food
pot noodles for 3 days = 5 euros
      207 euros in aussie = 308 aud

      308+1600= 1908

      a saving of 22 dollars !

      • Who would have thought…

      • Keep in mind that we live on an Island so people can basically (profanity) us however they see fit

        Username checks out

How does it compare to VB?

    • +1

      Less metal shaving flavour

  • I laughed at both your comments. Seems the mystery beer snob didn't, so have a plus 1.

  • just ordered 4…lets see how it competes with my current fav Leffe

    • Nah, I'll get an 18yo single malt for around 25 drink instead. Leffe is the most I pay for a beer.

      • +2

Can't beat a GOOD quality beer in my eyes (maybe my German ancestry). Have a Suntory Hibiki 21 Years Old & a Suntory Yamazaki 18 Years Old sitting in the cellar with about 80-100mL missing but still can't beat the beer advocate I am. So glad I can finally try whats so called "The Best Beer in the World"

      • +1

18yo for around 25! Can you point me in the right direction?

  • +1

Do you sell Augustiner? I believe it's also an expensive beer.

    • nurries thanks for reaching out. We don't have it on site at the moment, but let me check with our beer team tomorrow to see what we can do.

      Cheers

      • Look forward to hearing from you!

  • Added the Rochefort Trappistes 10 onto the order, after youtubing. Customer service is impeccable (even at 9pm at night) and no I'm not associated or have even dealt with them before.

    • Thanks BNR32. We appreciate the feedback.

We are always happy to help so please let us know if we can do anything else.

      Cheers,
      Ben

  • Any other high rating beers in stock?

Would love to get a hold of some of those high rating Imp stouts from ratebeer, or even Pliny :P

    • I've see Alesmith Speedway Stout in the store. 100/100 Rate Beer

  • @rep, your site needs some work. The search function is very dicy, and it's difficult to navigate to beers as there are a lot of styles missing from the menu.

  • Hmmmm, isn't this illegal to sell outside of belgium?

    • +2

At this price, I'd imagine so.

      • Its not illegal. When you buy it from the abbey, the monks ask that you agree not to on-sell the beers you buy from them.
Of course this goes straight out the window when people realise how much they can on-sell it for.

  • Website's search function doesn't work half the time
