American Express Qantas Ultimate Card - 100k QFF Bonus Points, $450 Travel Credit, 2 Qantas Club & AmEx Lounge Passes ($450 Fee)

1650

Received a letter from American Express that outlines the new and improved benefits for the Qantas Ultimate Card.
Old offer see here

AusBT has confirmed with AmEx that both new and existing members will get the new benefits mentioned.

New features include:

  • $450 travel credit for any domestic or international Qantas flight (via americanexpress.com.au/travel). This is replacing the previous offer of one complimentary Qantas selected domestic return flight.
  • 2 Qantas Club Lounge invitations After your first spend on selected Qantas products and services in Australia. Eligible purchases include Qantas passenger airfares with a QF flight number purchased directly from Qantas Australia by you or a travel agent, Qantas Frequent Flyer, Qantas Business Rewards or Qantas Club membership fees. Purchases from Jetstar, Qantas Holidays, Qantas Freight, Qantas Cruises, Qantas Box Office, Qantas epiQuire and Qantas Assure are not eligible purchases.
  • Qantas epiQure Premium Membership (usually $99) - benefits include free delivery on all orders within Australia, exclusive access to food and wine events and an additional 3pts in addition to the 1.5pts earn per $1 spent on Qantas epiQure purchases.

The kicker is that if you sign up now or have done so previously, they will replace your complimentary domestic return flight with the $450 travel credit - which in my opinion is more valuable as it gives flexibility for any Qantas domestic or international flight. As usual, travel credit will become available on the anniversary of your Card Membership.

But wait there's more…

Bonus Qantas Points:

  • 100,000 bonus Qantas Points when you apply online by 2 October 2017, are approved and spend $1,500 on your new Card within the first 3 months.
This offer is available to new Card Members, as well as Bank-issued American Express companion cardholders

Qantas Point Earning Rates

  • Earn 1.5 Qantas Points for every $1 spent on Card purchases, except spend at government bodies in Australia where you will earn 0.5 Qantas Points per $1 spent
  • Earn 1 additional Qantas Point per $1 spent on selected Qantas products and services in Australia
  • No cap on earn rate. You’ll receive up to 2.5 Qantas Points per $1 spent, no matter how much you spend each month

Existing Features:

  • Refund Protection
  • Purchase Protection
  • Online Fraud Protection Guarantee
  • Emergency Card replacement
  • Global Card support

Eligibility

  • I am aged over 18
  • I am an Australian citizen or permanent resident or hold a current Business Long Stay Visa (subclass 457)
  • I have a personal gross (pre-tax) annual income of $65,000 or more
  • I have no history of bad debt or payment default

These bonus points are available to new American Express Australia customers: so if you happen to have an AMEX from the Commonwealth Bank, NAB or Westpac you can apply for the card.

See updated benefits on the AusBT site - the sign up link does not note the changes yet.

        • @bion83: $900 in your left pocket 😂

        • +3

@bion83: You're not missing anything. That is a very competitive route so cash fares are low. Flying to Alice Springs or Norfolk Island in economy for instance would provide better value for your points as the cash fares are high. As a general rule though, premium cabin travel in business(2x points) or first class (3x points) or upgrades provides far better value where the cash equivalent is much higher

        • +1

@bion83: You're not missing anything - It is silly to use points unless you can make a benefit. In your case, with an economy flight, it doesn't make sense. This is the case for many economy class flights with QFF.

    • Did you select a reward seat?

    • +1

The taxes are not always the same both ways. In fact I would say from my experience, taxes are often different for the outbound and return flight even though it's a flight between the two same airports.

45k points sounds correct for East Coast Australia to SFO one-way. $431.15 sounds steep but I haven't looked at this route personally, but it doesn't sound unbelievable. Qantas are known for high taxes.

It's for this reason I'd recommend you jump on a US sale fare instead of using points on a route like this :P It's too competitive a route for points to be worth it.

  • Does the fee get charged at the start of the year or at the end?

    • +2

      the first statement

  • Hi sorry if this is a stupid quesiton but i've seen slightly different T&C's before.

Will i get the 100,000 points if i had and cancelled an AMEX held directly with american express 12 months ago?

It seems to say New customers.

    Thanks,

    • +2

You need to wait 18 months

"Card Members who currently hold or who have previously held any Card product issued by American Express Australia Limited, in the preceding 18 month period are ineligible for the Bonus Qantas Points offer. "

      • Thanks mate, i was expecting to see the 18 month rule somewhere but it didn't jump out at me.

  • +3

To the random who used my referal link last week, I thank you!

    PS. I love this card.

  • I just opened a David Jones Amex, but because ""Card Members who currently hold or who have previously held any Card product issued by American Express Australia Limited" not sure if I'm eligible ?

    • Then you are not eligible.

    • +1

      You are eligible.

    • Well, looks like I'm not.

      https://www.americanexpress.com/au/content/reward-cards/davi…

David jones : "Cards are offered, issued and administered by American Express Australia Limited. Credit provided by American Express Australia Limited "

      Too bad for me.

      • +1

You still are. Call the number on the back of the card to confirm.

        • I actually still have to wait 6 month for the 18 month period (closed my last one last year).

But I'll give a try in 6 month ;). Thanks.

        • @Jayjay93: I'm in the same boat. Called DJ amex hotline on the back of my card, and they confirmed that I'm still eligible for the 100k bono points.

  • What stops me signing up and getting my 100k points and closing the account? I will still be slugged the $450 annual card fee wont I?

    • Ya bet.

    • Yes.

    • where can 100k QFF points get me? Sorry im with Velocity.

eg, howmany points is Melb >> Sydney

  • Anyone know if you can pool the credit from two different accounts into one booking or if you can transfer the credit to a different account? I am not talking about booking a flight for someone else, but of transferring it on the backend.

    • Yes if that someone else is a family member

      • +2

Travel Credit can be pooled? Are you sure? I don't think so.

Your answer appears to be valid for a points transfer though.

        • I thought ahara meant the QFF points
but in the case of the travel credit, I'd imagine that's a no cos you will need to log into your AMEX account to make a booking through AMEX travel using travel credit, so obviously it's not possible to use the credits under two accounts on the same booking. Having said that, I suspect you might be able to pool your own travel credits from multiple cards.

      • +1

What if it's a really distant family member from an online forum? ;)

      • I booked the return flight on behalf of a 'friend' once and the rep rang the card holder directly while I was on hold to get them to authorise it. Don't know if this is still applicable with using the credit online though.

    • You can, you will technically be in breach of QFF T&C, however practically they don't audit based on my observations and research. The BEST play is to transfer it to a QFF platinum or platinum one member's account before you book your reward flights, as they have much better award seat availability. I just booked my RTW business class this way =D

  • If I refer a friend to this do I get the 30,000 points for referring?

    • Yes if you use your referral link, found in your account

  • +1

sorry im new to all this my ANZ Amex card has been made invalid earlier this month so i was looking at seeing if i even should keep an AMEX

So this card is $450/ year but they give you free $450credit off qantas flights every year, plus the point bonus, plus the lounge tickets?

So as long as you fly at least once a year with qantas and pay your card balances on time, this card is "pretty much free"?

    thanks in advance

    • +1

      Yes

    • Correction: Pretty much they pay you to hold it if you fulfil that criteria after factoring in the other perks you get (Travel Insurance, 2x Sydney AMEX Lounge Access, 2x Qantas Club Lounge Passes)

      • looks too good to be true :\

        lol

        • +1

It's a win for Qantas too. The travel credit will make you buy a flight with them which in many cases will be much more than $450. And you are likely to travel with a companion or family who will pay full fares. Same with the FF points that you earn. So its a win-win really for all parties - AMEX, Qantas and cardholder.

        • @MelbBoy:

I ended up applying :) prepaying $450 for the card annually and getting all those benefits as well as $450 towards a quantas flight later?

          Might as well!

thanks for confirmation as well Melbboy!

  • I have an amex issued card for work ("American Express Corporate"). Assume that makes me an existing card member and not eligible for points?

    • I don't think so. Corporate Cards have the account holder as your company typically, while you are just a "cardholder" (supplementary in a sense). As you are not "managing" the account, you are still a new card member for this promo.
Don't take my word for it though, ask the financial manager at your company if you are the manager of the card account.

Want to get those 100,000 Qantas points for FREE? Here's what I did:
    1) spend $1500 within a few days of activating your card (the quicker the better - I prepaid some bills)
    2) pay off your full balance using BPAY (biller code: 88013, reference: your card number)
    3) your Qantas points (including the 100,000 bonus) will sweep over to your frequent flyer account 7 days before your first statement
    4) you now have 7 days to ring up and cancel your account before the $450 annual fee hits
    5) enjoy your FREE 100,000 bonus points

    • -2

To sweep over you need your amex issued broom

    • +3

      why is this down-voted?

    • username checks out.

      • yes he is churning credit card, in the US many banks flagged and blacklisted the card churners, Australia will soon follow.

  • It says this on their website for eligibility.

"I have a personal or household gross (pre-tax) annual income of $65,000 or more"

Does that mean as long as my household has a gross annual income of over 65k, one person from my household can apply?

  • Question: If I say book a flight say to USA using my QFF points, when I have to pay the additional fees/taxes can I use the AMEX $450 Qantas credit for this?

    • +1

No, as the reward booking is made through the Qantas site, not through Amex travel (where the $450 credit will come to use). So you have to cough up the cash for the taxes.

  • Does using the card via Paypal at places that don't normally take AMEX still count for full FF points?

    • +1

Yes. Paying through PayPal will mean you don't get category bonuses though.

      • Fine by me as long as I get the 1.5 per $ I'm happy :) Thanks!

      • What are the category bonuses in this case?

        • You get a bonus point per dollar for spend on Qantas (2.5pts/$), so if you paid with PayPal on Qantas (dunno if that's an option?) you will only get 1.5pt/$.

You get 0.5pts/$ for spend at "government bodies", so you'd actually come out ahead by getting 1.5pt/$ if you pay via PayPal.

How do I know if my free flight/travel credit has been activated?
Will it show up on the online account somewhere? I tried to carbon offset option but not sure if it works…

    • Fyi I just used the live chat and they confirmed activated.
Further fyi - the carbon offset activated the free flight.

      • So how do you know if free flight/travel credit has been activated? (without going through chat or calling)
I purchased the carbon offset and via chat they're saying its not an eligible transaction

        • I first confirmed via chat (about a week after purchasing the carbon offset).

But it also showed up on my statement (both online transaction list and hard copy statement) once the statement had been issued.

        • how much carbon offset fee did you pay?

        • @PissLUR: $0.97. I think chat person didnt really know as they advised me to call the number(to book flight) and that they would be able to confirm eligibility or not

        • @godzilla123:

afaik, it needs to be more than a dollar.

  • +1

Might be a bit late to the party but have AmEx now started enforcing their waiting period for all their bonus sign ups? Based on the comments of this thread it seems like yes

    • Keen to get confirmation on this also.

  • +3

The change to a travel credit is a great move and makes this much more valuable. The question now is what to do with 100k points? We went with the QF RTW Award ticket last year for 140k - which I think is a great redemption. We flew through North America, Europe and South America all for 140k points and $700 in tax. Wrote a small guide feel free to check out - http://www.auswallet.com/fly-around-the-world-for-less-than-…

  • Is this deal valid if you already have a different Amex issued card?
    EDIT: Never mind. It's not.

  • Anyone know the time period it takes approximately from application (with provision of all required documents etc to Amex) until you are able to activate card and use the travel credit. I`m eyeing a Qantas sale price at the moment so if it takes a week or so it might be too long.

    • +1

      Consider 5-7 working days.

    • Travel credit is only available after 31 Oct. Until then it's the domestic flight.

  • +3

Just called AMEX and they confirmed you can only get a free domestic flight on this card up until 31 Oct (as specified on the amex page) which reverts to the travel credit after this date.

They aren't able to amend it to a $450 travel credit if you're intending to use it before 31 Oct so you might want to amend the post

    • Thank you. Very useful to know.

  • Can the $450 Qantas credit be used on an affiliate airline?

  • Hi Guys,

Where do i put my referral link?
    Is there a common thread?

    • Go to your user setting and then click rferral.

      • Got it. cheers

  • I just read through the Ts & Cs.

Looks like nothing to stop two spouses (same household) making two separate applications?

    • That's 100% fine. Each person can get their own card. 200k Qantas points right there :)

  • +1

Got the card after 4 days of application and with the AMEX velocity card already in possession.

    • +2

Report back and let us know if you get the bonus points as well though?

      • +1

No bonus points I'm afraid. Will cancel and apply for it under my wife's name.

  • Hi All, do BPAY transactions count towards the 1500 spend?

    • According to the T&C, yes I think so.

      • Thanks Leiiv, I thought that as well but many comments on reddit suggest BPAY transactions do not count. I haven't tried it yet because I'm still trying to find out how to use BPAY with amex.

  • Anybody know the cheapest product to purchase to qualify for the 2 Qantas Club Lounge invitations?

  • How do I convert all the 100,000 QFF Point into Wish e-gift card?

  • To get the 100,000 bonus point you have to spend $1500 within the first three months. I wonder if the annual fee is counted towards the $1500. The T&C only states: "Eligible purchases do not include cash advances, interest, balance transfers, fees and charges for traveller’s cheques and foreign currencies. "

    • The T&C only states: "Eligible purchases do not include cash advances, interest, balance transfers, fees and charges for traveller’s cheques and foreign currencies. "

Unfortunately it doesn't count towards the $1500

      • I thought the sentence should be read as: "[cash advances], [interest], [balance transfers], [fees and charges for [traveller’s cheques] and [foreign currencies]]" instead of "[cash advances], [interest], [balance transfers], [fees] and [charges for [traveller’s cheques] and [foreign currencies]]"

        • That sentence could benefit from an Oxford comma.

  • Qantas Points or Velocity Points? Which one you prefer?

  • Hi guys.

I wanted to ask if i apply for this card thru a referral link, will i b getting any additional bonus points ?
like in the last offer for DJ AMEX, if u applied thru a referral link, u were getting 50k rewards points instead of the usual 40k and currently i have checked for the velocity platinum card, if u apply thru referral link u will get 60k velocity points instead of the usual 50k.

    Hope 2 c replies soon.

    Cheers.

  • I booked a flight on Qantas website direct today, and paid with my brand new Qantas Ultimate Card. Am I right to be outraged that they're charging me a 1.3% card processing fee using a Qantas Co-Branded card? It seems like a rort!

    • Yeah that was my thought too. You can book and pay via Amex travel portal, you won't get charged a service fee or surcharge there

      • Thanks good tip.

  • How many supplementary cards can you have?

  • How come when clicking through via Qantas Ultimate ref link, the page that loads says only "65,000 Qantas Points"?

    • I applied a few days ago and the referral link said 100k points "when you apply by 28 September 2017". Looks like they've changed it to just 65k.

    • Unfortunately the referral links were only valid up to 28th Sept for the 100k points deal… not sure why when the promo is actually until the 2nd Oct.

It seems if you don't use the referral link and go direct you can still apply and get 100k points offer.
