  • Optus has 14GB Data | Unlimited Calls & SMS | $300 Int | For $40 a month, not sure if the student discount stacks on top for 10% off to $36 a month. Just putting it out there if you want to pay the extra $5 or 10 for 4GB.

    • One big difference is the Virgin international is to anywhere - not just popular countries. This makes all the difference if you need to regularly call somewhere like PNG.

      • -7

        PNG lol

      • But Optus international is 300 min not $300. When you calculate Virgins $0.xx/30sec + $0.40 connection fee, it can cost more than $1/min.
        Eg: USA/UK its 40c/30sec + 40c connection fee
        china : 50c/30sec + 40c connection fee
        India : 90c/30sec + 40c connection fee

        http://www.virginmobile.com.au/international-rates/
check this if international calls are more important and you destination in listed in optus' "selected countries".

        Virgin has data rollover
Optus has wifi calling — if you live in a poor reception area.

        • Virgin does not have a connection fee on this plan….

      • This plan shows "Unlimited standard international calls from Oz to the UK, USA, NZ, China, India, Canada & Singapore for the life of the plan when you sign up by 02/08/17."

Where does it state that you can call anywhere?

        • +1

The $300 standard international calls and texts are to anywhere at their standard rates - these unlimited calls are in addition to that as a bonus.

Just so you know, the student discount does stack. I'm currently paying $36 for the $40 BYO plan.

    • +1

      last month was 15GB

    • Hmm.. I'm thinking if whether I should go with the Optus one because of the cheap Hoyts tickets from Optus Perks, or continue staying on with Virgin in hopes of redeeming a free flight with Velocity sometime in the future..

    data amounts are getting awesome

    • Yep, I knew they will get big, so I held off on any contracts unto the end of the year. Hopefully it soon transfers to handset plans to.

      • +1

You can already get 40GB for $100 a month and an S8 at Optus. Also comes with mobile TV streaming, music streaming and Optus Sport.

      Yes indeed.

We visited India recently and there was everyone upbeat about 1Gb data allowance, I laughed and sarcastically told, for around $35 we get more than 10 Gigs of data per month

One of my mates laughed and said it was 1Gb data allowance per day for $7 per month with unlimited national calls and if someone is happy to pay $10 per month then data allowance per day is 2.5Gb with unlimited national calls.

Hope we get those allowances here soon.

Personally I don't want people to have too big data allowances.

As I understand Indian networks can get pretty congested as is.

In Indonesia where I lived for about a year we started off with 12GB/month/~$6 with unlimited at $20/month.

Because of more and more people using 4G and extreme congestion from P2P etc they had to reduce the data to about 5GB/month/$6.

      • Yeah I heard that. With some JIO network plans they are not paying anything for phone use from last 6 months. They signup upfront with about $100 for phone with the plan and their services are being extended.

  • 12 months is a loooong time in the cut throat mobile plans market in Australia (the most competitive market on the planet).

It is pretty much guaranteed that a better deal will come along during this time that does not involve a contract (so either prepaid or month-to-month postpaid), especially given the 4th physical network (from TPG) might be live by then.

Bought the Optus 12 month$40 for 10gb 1.5 years ago. Best Deal since then is $40 for 15gb. Which i just used to. Not really that cut throat

      We might be number 2

        And their average wages…

    • A better deal on a 12 month contract? Probably.
A better deal on a no-contract SIM plan? No chance.

The best no-contract SIM plan was $40 per month for 10GB at Virgin approximately 12 months ago, which was only offered to combat the same offer at other carriers, who offered it on a 12 month lock in (but Virgin had not yet developed these plans, so offered it without lock in).

The CIS states that cancellation is only (25% of the monthly cost x number of months remaining), so even if some amazing deal came out in almost 12 months time, you would still be better off taking this contract and then cancelling down the line to move, rather than paying more for similar data on a no-contract basis, or settling for much less data for your money.

      • 4th physical network (with its own plethora of MVNOs).

        Enough said 😉

Also, 12 months ago Kogan Mobile hasn't come back from the dead yet or at least wasn't as aggressive with their pricing.

If the Vodafone network works for you, the competition there is especially fierce with Kogan and Lebara locking horns with each other.

  • I recently switched from vodafone to virgin and the internet speed has been terrible on trains in melbourne. It shows decent reception for 4g though. Has anyone got similar experience?

    • I have the exact same problem but with Vodafone. Reception seems to be OK most of the places except on trains!! Stuck in a small carriage with thousands of people but can't load any Facebook/Instagram feeds. I believe there are too many users in the so called 4G network

  • Is the velocity offer for new customers only?

    • +2

No, it's for anyone. But the name on the velocity card must be identical to the name on the account (e.g If the velocity account does not have a middle initial, then the Virgin Mobile account can't have it either).

      • Can't find anywhere before I click accept that velocity will give me a discount? Also no cash back for existing customers

  • -4

Also keep in mind the virgin mobile data will not be as fast as an Optus data service. The network priority on data packets is lower even though using the same towers.

    • +1

      source?

    • This is incorrect. Virgin is a wholly owned subsidiary of Optus, so you will get the same network priority as Optus.

    • +1

      Why would you lie, @BargainBenno?

Virgin customers have identical network access to Optus customers.

  • this plan took away the international minutes?

edit: my bad…just not including the bonus

  • Curious, does the first 30 days start from when you sign up online, or when you activate the sim once it arrives?

    • +1

When it's activated. And you will not have a "first 30 days"; you'll be automatically assigned a billing cycle date, and your first monthly bill will be prorated according to the number of days between activation of service and said billing cycle date.

  • They had this deal recently. Signed up from month to month plan, to 12months.
The data rollover is very handy.

CR was $50 at the time too. (Somehow I'm on 19gb deal for $45 velocity discount)

  • Does it come with free ring ding?

  • I was hopeful of a slightly better deal given the crazy cheap prepaid Kogan were doing.

  • My two cents.
Was in Israel. Paid about $29 AUD for unlimited calls text, data roam in 25 countries and unlimited calls to these countries + 10GB of data for TWO lines!!!

I was also in the USA like a year ago. They have had unlimited mobile data plans for a very long time…

Australia is well behind and we are expensive.

    • American unlimited isn't actually unlimited. You have an allowance, and when you go over it goes down to slower than 3G speeds or even worse.

      • +1

But those 'allowances' are massive anyhow, 22-30GB at each of the four major carriers. Plus I'm sure most would accept de-prioritised speeds vs being forced to $10/GB overcharges.

      • US 4G plans are averagely slower I found than Aus carriers.
